Hi,
I'm currently trying to get some ideas for my dissertation and was wondering if anyone could help. Basically what I had wanted to do was to look at the Dystopic genre in some way; initially I wanted to cover key writers such as Wells, Orwell, Huxley, etc. But this proved to be far too broad a question as I have an 8, 000 word limit. I’m currently thinking about breaking the essay into three sections with each looking at a particular theme within dystopic fiction, e.g. feminist would be Atwood and The Handmaid’s Tale and so on. The problem I have found with this is that I can’t really think of any other definitive themes and equally I can’t think of other authors to go with them.
So basically I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for three themes within dystopic fiction that I could cover and the authors which best represent them?

Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated!!

Many thanks,
Gavin

Why don't you cover one of those 'key writers'? eg. Orwell...political.

Thanks for the help on my previous post!
I’ve decided to stick with the dystopia themed dissertation, and I’m thinking I’ll break it into three parts each with a theme, feminism Attwood, totalitarianism Orwell, and a third theme which can encompass Huxley, not sure what that could be yet, and if it would be appreciably different from the totalitarianism theme. These writers are just my primary sources for each section I will be using others and if anyone has any suggestions I’d be grateful. The central problem I’m having at the moment is that I’m required to have a goal, or to contest something, or add further explanation to something, but I can’t think of a way I can do this with my dissertation.
Basically I was wondering if anyone had any ideas for a way in which I can take my three themes and include a goal, because at the moment all I’m going to be doing is analysing texts which isn’t going to fly :(
I had some ideas such as the ways in which these texts/authors are reflective of the times in which they were written. Or look at my three themes and talk about the key elements of each, the authors and texts of each, but again I can’t seem to come up with a reason, something I need to find out, or I’m going to try and find out , or some question I’m going to try and answer with my dissertation.

Once again any help would be greatly appreciated!

Many thanks,
Gavin
