What are the books in your collection that you are most glad to own?

I have two. First is the Lord of the Rings books, which I bought in a single volume. That has got to be one of my smartest purchases in the history of my purchases.

The second one is a volume of the entire Sherlock Holmes mysteries. All in one! Hound of the Baskervilles, The Sign of Four, and The Scowrers(sp) included alongside the short stories.

I just bought a third one which I think will end up also being a "smart purchase":
the complete unabridged Edgar Allan Poe. Every single one of his pieces!!!

Anyhow, how about you? It doesn't necessarily have to be your favorite book, just one that you feel you were extremely wise in getting. Though I must admit, I am decidedly a Lord of the Rings fan. I'm sure you couldn't tell. :p

I think I'm really happy to own 'To the Lighthouse' by Virgingia Woolf, among many other classics.

There is one book that I absolutely love called 'Charley' by Joan G. Robinson, that I've had since my childhood [about a girl running away from home: my childhood dream! lol!]

And recently I bought 'Teacher Man' by Frank McCourt: excellent, excellent read. If any of you are teachers, especially literature or language teachers, then this is the book to read!

Perhaps Robinson Crusoe...sentimental reasons actually. I bought it because my brother, who is in the military, was reading it. Later when I was back in CA after visiting him, I picked it up and absorbed it like a sponge. Sentimental because of my brother, and also because Robinson Crusoe is what started my readings into the classics.

Mine is an older copy published sometime in the 60's I believe, of both The Castle and The Trial by Franz Kafka, with many extras at the end of each novel, such as fragments, incomplete chapters, and introductions from the 3 different editions that had been published up to that time. It also lists the two most popular ways of arranging The Trial (although it is only published in Max Brod's original, I believe). Kafka probably being my favorite writer this was definitely a worthy purchase.
I also have another Kafka book of all his works published within his lifetime, these include 'Metamorphosis,' 'In the Penal Colony,' and 'The Judgement.' I've read and re-read the stories in this book more times than I could remember, making it an extremely good purchase.
Lastly I'd say my book of Goethe (primarily). It includes Faust, Hermann and Dorothea, and Egmont, as well as Dr. Faustus by Christopher Marlowe. Certainly a wonderful collection of poetry and drama, one of my favorites along with my Kafkas :D .

One of my books would probably be Hamlet, or maybe The Blackboard Jungle which is also another great read for lit. or English teachers. My biggest guilty pleasure, though, is the complete Dark Tower series by King. I'm aware that many people find his work drivel, but for some reason, I am drawn to that series time and again.

Wow! Congratulations. I love old books! Like to burrow into them and smell that lovely heady fragrance, luring you deeper into tales of things done and places gone. Both me and my mom love smelling old books -- that's our "drugs":D

My handbook of Chemistry and Physics, it's from 1936 and the original price was $0.36. A good deal of the information still applies.

I also have a collection of books I recieved when I was a kid, my Mom sent in my name, friends names, and a few other interesting tidbits and they send you a set of books with stories that revolve around that information.

I've seen that recently in my bookstore, with golden bindings, but it was just too too too expensive...About 500 US dollars:flare:
I have almost every Dostoevsky's book, War and Peace, Ana Karenina and many others, and I bought them by myself and in my country books are very expensive and I'm a student so that's why happiness is even bigger:)

A very old edition of Armour Wherein He Trusted by Mary Webb. The edition is one of seven; I've just started the collection.

My unfinished collections that I am also happy to have: Paradise Lost (need Paradise Regained) and Dante's Inferno (need Purgatorio and Paradiso)

Heh, I don't really have any books in my collection that I really like... is that bad?!? All the books in my collection are ones that other people have bought for me, and I don't read them (Brian Jaques books aside) lol The library works for me, it is like my extended bookshelf, since it is only a ten minute walk from my house...

Wow! Now that is beyond cool. Every time I go through a Lord of the Rings mood, I've got the book. Every time I go through a Poe mood, I've got the book. But I don't have one to rival the "Pride and Prejudice" collection. Congrats! Books are absolutely tip-top.
