I read this book a few summers ago and only remember a few of the details. For the life of me, can't remember the title or author. (Getting old is terrible!)
It is by either an African or Caribbean (Cuban, Haitian, Dominican maybe?) author and written in the 20th century. I remember that the main character was a young boy whose father owned drove an old bus.
Several mentions of drought and floods in the book. Also, a mysterious beautiful woman who appears near the town well. A corporation (telecommunications maybe?) that takes the good land and hires some of the locals. Groups of people who build their shanty homes near a mass grave.
