In my opinion, zoos are nothing but wrong!
I have read the article, and I don't agree with it at all.
"Animals in the wild lead lives of compulsion and necessity within an unforgiving social hierarchy in an environment where the supply of fear is high and supply of food low and where territory must constantly be defended and parasites forever endured."
That's true, but it is nature! we're not doing a good deed if we take an animal away from the"cruel nature" and imprison it in a cage.
It would probably feel a great deal better, if it could go on living free and wild, even if this means less food and more danger!!
And I also think the quality of life is more important than it's lenght....Of course lions are not allowed to eat the monkeys next door in a zoo as well as sharks can't fight with dolphins ecc...these monkeys and dolphins will live longer, but won't be happier!
I have been to S.Diego zoo, and I think animals have too little space to live in and are subjected to heavy stress!
Now, some animals born in captivity could be reintroduced into nature, and there are natural parks or reserves for those which find more difficulties.
As for those injured....I don't know...maybe there are possibilities for them to be reintroduced too, or maybe we should let them die without annoying them.
Zoos dedicate their resources to wildlife conservation, such as by tracking the gene pools of endangered species and running extensive education programs for the public of all ages. Zoos enable us to learn first-hand about our fellow creatures and to take an active interest in their survival.
mmm...no...I don't think zoos may have an educational function....documentaries do..not zoos! They show us wild animals transformed into impotent prisoners. They teach us it is right to look at them suffering (because in my opinion they suffer), they teach us we can play with life and they teach us we are superior to the other species on Earth (which is true if we talk about intelligence, but is wrong if we it gets us to think we ca abuse of animals)!
Where is education??? I can't see it!

Dang...You sure let loose on this one.
But...I do see your point. The zoo really doesn't teach much...And when it teach, it teaches the negatives of life.
Documentaries, on the other hand, is very useful in my mind.
But...I guess only some people see it that way. Since, there are zoos all over the world.
I'm one for nature. Let nature take its course.

well, yes, sometimes I get too involved in what I am saying, I know.;)
and I am glad you share my opinion!!
I don't agree with those who say if you defend animals, then you' re betraying mankind...
I really believe animals are not objects we ca use in the way we want, they have feelings, they can suffer....If we want to be the "leaders", we have to demonstrate we can become good ones, who respect life and dignity in every species!

 Too involved? Nah. I'm pretty sure that's just a little taste of what's on your mind.:D
It's really hard argue with you on this one being that I agree with you and all.:p
Hmm...Humans...Us...People...There are a lot of things that we do that are questionable...
One thing...Is the creation of zoos...Protection of the animals? If that's what they see, do they see the effects that it cause?
