Well....
I was wondering..
what do you think that would have happened in (the story) "Lord of the Flies"

-If Ralph wouldn't have been there??
-If Jack wouldn't have been there??

I think that the story without Jack would have been completely different.
§ For example if there wouldn’t have been any Jack I think that there would have been a democracy on the island all the time instead of only in the beginning. That’s because Jack is the one who ends this democracy by beginning a new group under his dictorial regime. He manipulates the people the people by using their fear of the beats, and he says that he’ll protect them, if they still don’t want to join the group he puts pressure on them so that they’re eventually forced to join his group
§ I also think that there would have been no murders at all if Jack would have been gone because –first of all it wouldn’t be allowed because of the democracy, they’d try to solve quarrels with the whole group in a way that would be best for all of them, so that nobody would be killed –nobody would want to kill another person because they’d know that would be uncivilized / barbarous.
§ I think that the live of everyone would have been better because the individuals would work for the importance of the whole group and not only to increase their individual “well-being” like Jack does. So because of that everyone would have a sleeping place, enough food etc. Persons like Roger wouldn’t sadistically tease other children, because of that the group spirit would be much better.

I think that even if those particular two characters had not been there, two of the other boys would have assumed their exact roles. The author is suggesting that when people are removed from society and placed in a situation of lawlessness, human nature dictates that a person will revert to either of two extremes- the dictatorship where one person rules and maipulates all the others (as presented by Jack), or the utopia where everyone is selfless and peaceful (as presented by Ralph).

It simply happens that these two characters were the first boys on the island to revert back to basic human instinct. If one or the other had not been there, another character would instinctively step up and perform the same role. Though the particluar character might change, this clash of (I suppose more than) personalities would always occur.

Oh wait- you mean theoretically, if one character's role on the island didn't extist, what would happen? Oops. I miss-interpreted. Sorry for my ramblings.

Without the existance of Ralph, Jack would have more than likely killed Piggy much earlier, and the boys would have fallen into savagery sooner. Ralph was like the boy who tried to use his finger to block the destruction of a dam... it won't work for long, and eventually, he will lose.
But, on the other hand, if Jack didn't exist, either Roger or Maurice may have had the same effect- Roger is sometimes viewed as sadistic, being the first and only boy to willfully commit murder, among his other abuses, such as the destruction of the sand castles and throwing rocks at a little 'un. If Roger had taken Jack's place, Ralph, Piggy, and Simon's fates could have been much worse, their deaths drawn out through torture.
