Hey Kids. To make a long story short I am not currently working and I'm starting to get bored. Any ideas for stuff to do during the day?

Read, play lets confuse google. Rearrange all the furniture, and maybe redecorate, learn to knit/sew/etc. I hear daytime Tv is addictive .

Hmm, you could go to a museum for some cultural input if there's one in your town.
Also, if it's not too costy, you could travel around a bit in your area, or further...(there are soooo many places I would like to see if I were to visit the US, but maybe they aren't so attractive to someone who already lives there :))
Or else you could start to learn a new language, maybe French or Latin (depending on how much free time you've actually got :)).
Or, if nothing works out, I could use somebody to prepare and write my exam for me :D.

Reading, reading and more reading :p Maybe look around your area, are there any community centers or gyms or anyplace that offers fun classes to take and meet new folks? Dancing, cooking, discussion groups, etc. Or maybe get into some volunteer work.

I think you should definitely set to work building a computer. That's what I'd be doing if I didn't have other obligations and demands on my time. It looks like a relatively easy thing to do, if you can get all the components, and make sure that they're all compatible, and keep from destroying them before it's finished. In fact, it's now your job to build a computer. You can find all the information you need online, as well as all the parts. I'll be checking in periodically; I expect to see progress. :p

Read, walk, play a videogame, write, sleep, cook. Enjoy some freedom. Plus you can hang out here more. Although that is not an open invitation to be mean to the Dastardlies like that mean ol' meanie Jay suggests...:p

go for walks. it's free and good for you...
oops, are there sidewalks where you live? I heard there are no sidewalks in most American suburbs?
Okay: i have the same question as Stan, since i have a snowday today. (note: YAY! :p) Only, I can't leave my house, since a) it's freezing out; and b) i can't drive and there is absolutely nothing within walking, running, or biking distance of my house. Any good, relaxing ideas for things to do in between working on a history paper? :(
and Sleepy, there seem to be sidewalks in big developmental areas, with lots of houses, but there aren't any in my neighborhood. mine seems pretty old, though.

Are there really seldomly footpaths in suburds in the us? thst seems really weird.
Cross stitching. can be very terepudic! When i was unemployed i took up eating...wasn't a very good idea. That was two years ago and i'm still trying to get rid of all the weight i put on.

I'm sure I've seen suburbs without sidewalks somewhere in America, but I can't think where. I do pass by houses occasionally without a sidewalk bordering the street, but that is rare. I think many municipalities require home-owners to pay for a portion of the sidewalk on their property, if it was not installed initially when the neighborhood was established. Anyway, most everywhere I've engaged in peripateticism, and I've been all over, has been considerate enough to furnish me with a concrete path off the road.
Here's another project for you, papayahed: research the percentage of suburbs in the US with and without sidewalks, and compare your findings with similar figures for ten other developed countries. We'll all be anticipating your results; you have until February 15th.

thanks for all the suggestions. It seems that every time I'm unemployed it's in January. Coincidence?
Come to think of it, the last time i was unemployeed I got a new MP3 as well. The one I recently ordered arrived today!!! More Coincidence!!!!!
Note to self: Don't make waves or order MP3's in January!! Perhaps I should add that to the other thread...

There are tons of good things to do, like participating in the bookclub(hey! It´s Capote! this month), study, clean... But for utterly filling time I would suggest World of Warcraft. It has eaten a huge chunk of my life when I was sick, and it was great fun. You get to meet interesting people and whack them on the head with a broadsword. Sometimes that is all I need.

I don't know, papaya. Whenever I've been home doing nothing, I only wasted my time and contributed to my embarrassing post counts on various forums, plus making friends with people I'll never meet on other sides of the world :( I wish I was a productive person

I guess I should explain a little. Everybody know I have a big mouth right? At the urging of HR I initiated a meeting with my boss to get a few issues cleared up (I had 5 major sticking points in regards to compliance, employee relations, and safety). I went into the meeting with typed notes on things I wanted to touch on, I thought things went well, my boss gave me feed back on my performance and we addressed some of the issues I brought up. Unfortunately or Fortunately when I walked in to that meeting I expressed my frustration level. Two days later on Sunday night a different HR person calls and says she's talked to my boss and it seems like I'm unhappy and it's not a fit so it would be best if we part ways. I as like "huh? Don't you want to hear my version?" She said "no I've heard everything I need to". And that was that.
Since then I've written a letter to the head of HR asking for more of an explanation.

Yeah, I agree with B-Mental, what a crock of crap. I guess whomever you ticked off didn't have any tolerence for letting people express themselves. All you were doing was bringing up points. You weren't undermining anyone or anything. If a boss had any skill at employee relations he would have had you express yourself and agreed to what he agrees with and disagreed with what he disagrees with and lay out a go forward plan with you. If you still butted heads then perhaps he would have to elevate it a notch. It doesn't sound like you were not doing your job.
Sorry to hear this Papaya. Perhaps there is some recourse. Unless this was a small company, they usually need more justification to let you go. You might want to see if they complied legally.

That's pretty cruddy you got fired. I'm sorry. But you do get the opportunity to do a lot of things in the meantime.
I would try cleaning or rearranging my house if I were you. I also think learning another language would be nice. In my area, there is a college with free concert orchestras and they play beautiful. You could search up online for events like that in your area or go to museums.
There are plenty of things to do. Cook for friends, invite them over.
Good luck.
P.S. Where did the no sidewalks come from?? Everywhere I have managed to visit here in the states has sidewalks. The biggest city to the smallest suburbs I've been to have had them...hmmm :D

Have you ever tried to sleep with head scarf on?
The lifting isnt a problem I work in a library, the sea I love I dont get sea sick, bad food...well I have a cast iron stomach as long as milk int involved... The long hours I could proably adapt too I just be grumpy, but I tend to for some unkown reason to become more pedantic and and whats the word have higher work standerds when IM tierd.
And well its unlikly to ever happen that I get to do it is it? SO I can say Id like to try it even though I know it was placed in the top 10 most stressful jobs and in the top 5 most dangerous jobs because if things were differant Id have loved to try at least. :D
Also for some wierd reason I know a few libarians and information proffesional were deep sea fishermen before they became librarians. One of them says the most dangerous things at sea are the sea gulls, that attack you while your trying to gut and clean the fish.

One guy on my crew sleeps with curlers in his handlebar mustache and another wears a mint green moisturizing "mask" goop all over his face........ I think your headscarf would not be a problem.
The seagull are just pests....... the only real danger out at sea is the sea itself.
p.s. don't leak those stress and danger stats to my crew.....they'll want more money.
