so im working on a paper about 1984. i can write about ANYTHING i want. so my first thoughts are:

Why are churches mentioned so much in 1984? what signifigance is Orwell trying to get across about churches?
Why is Winston so facinated with the little song about all the churches?
what is the signifigance that all the churches are in the backround?
no one would dream of having sex in a church, yet it becomes a safe place for Winston and Julia. ?
it is ultimately the telescreen HIDDEN BEHIND THE CHURCH picture that leads to Winston and Julias doom.

I want to write about these things but I just can't get any substance, or purpose to write about these things.

any insights?
it'd be great.

i think orwell chose the church to be a key symbol because, churches offer a salvation, a hope that is lost in Ingsoc. all within the party have lost hope, and the church is one of the many symbols in 1984 that offer hope. Also no one would dream of having sex for pleasure in Ingsoc, it was a thoughtcrime, so really if your were going against Big Brother, it really would not matter where you are having sex.

Song about churches is important because it's Winston memory from a youth, so it's a prove they they really existed, and history was changed by Anglosoc.
