An approach to the tradition formed by great European writers such us Thomas Mann,Marcel Proust,Andre Gide,James Joyce is a typical artist of the modern age.A Portrait of the Artist as a young man reconstructs the spiritual biography of the artist, the growth of his personality.Stephen Dedalus, the main character rejects discipline but his is aware that he must rise above the vulgarity of his environment.
Dedalus is a symbol ,a powerful one ,the maker of wings who tried to escape from the labyrinth of Crete using his invincible artistry.
The book is full of notes ,hidden visions -the author focuses almost exclusively on the mind of the hero.

The lack of discipline is used precisely to make a point on doing somethig else.By breaking the boarders,James Joyce a.k.a Stephen Deadalus is trying to say that the narrow interpretation of life and it's consequences must change, otherwise Ireland will never make progress. It is perhaps even a manifesto not against God,but against that catholicism that is keeping Ireland very conservatory even in the twentieth ceuntry. If you remember,it is in the first chapter of the book that Mr.Casey says: "No God for Ireland! We have had too much God in Ireland.Away with God!".It speaks for itself, doesn't it?
