'the diamond sea' is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard.

I never really liked Sonic Youth, I always preferred the Pumpkins.
star blue

they are on the list of bands who've ripped off kim gordon and thurston moore.

You may be right, but I still like them best.

on one hand you've got the smashing pumpkins, who are a:ss-9 clones. on the other you've got original songs composed by four talented and well educated musicians. I mean, c'mon, do you cream yourself everytime you see a van gogh painting-by-numbers?
crisaor
02-17-2004, 04:56 PM
Well, in this case, I like the clone. C'mon, none of the pumpkins songs can be labelled as unoriginal, even if the band has a lot of common points with Sonic Youth. Anyway, I had the chance to see SY live (but not the Pumpkins) and I was so not impressed. They are good musicians, you can tell that, but they don't reach me in the least. I'm sure you can understand that.

sonic youth is more of an american band.
star blue

if you lived in detroit, maybe you'd understand.
subterranean

Thank God I don't live in detroit...
I agree with Cris there, Pumpkins' songs are all original. But I don't see how SY sounds alike like SP, I mean okey SY got some songs which indeed ROCK, but I still see Billy is more original and talented..
star blue
02-17-2004, 11:14 PM
yeah, you don't want to live here.

I'm American and I much prefer pumpkins to SY. But I don't live in Rock City. That would suck

anyway, back to the smashing pumpkins. here's the problem I have: they were really cool back in the seventh grade, but after that they turned mainstream. it's not even the band I hate so much, it's their fans. you've got 'the smashing pumpkins' carved into every lonely high school student's notebook, along with staind, linkin park, p.o.d., puddle of mud, the goo goo dolls, nirvana, &c., &c., &c.; alice in chains, hole, slipknot, system of a down, nine inch nails, korn, limp bizkit . . . the best in alternative rock.
I don't see how you can even compare them to sonic youth.

Good point. It happens to me also, specially with the Rolling Stones. If you ever make a trip to South America, you'll know what I'm talking about. They've developed a new way of talking, derssing, and walking, which is very bothersome. Ugh.
Nevertheless, from what you say, it seems to me that you do like the SP, so making the separation between the band and the fans shouldn't be too difficult.
Another thing, all the bands you mentioned, do you really believe them to be the "best in alternative rock"?

Because they sound alike, they make similar music, that's why.
Oh well, I'd better get back to Mellon Collie :)
star blue

I don't think sonic youth sounds anything at all like the smashing pumpkins. maybe a few songs share a couple similarities, but I'd place sonic youth way up here. there is something magical about them.
as for the smashing pumpkins, I'd probably have to place them all the
way down here.

uhh... I live in VA. If you want to know where I'm FROM, like where I grew up and where I became who I am, then no, I'm FROM Silver Spring MD. A city touching Washington DC. I DO NOT consider myself "southern" and will not live in the south post-uni. But I can understand why you would question my taste based solely on the fact that I'm from the south.

well the fact that SP is popular among kids won't change the fact that SP is an awesome band, and on the other hand, the fact that SY is less popular than SP also won't change the fact that SY is less awesome than SP. Blame the kids..
I do hate popular bands..and I till don't get it what's this all gotta do with the place you live in.

sonic youth appeals to a certain kind of upbringing . . . the industrial, dark and dirty. it's not just a strange coincidence that their largest fan base is in new york city.

sometimes place has everything to do with it.
[btw, how many sonic youth albums have any of you actually heard?]

Nope. When I went to the US I visited NY, Miami, and Florida. Nothing else. I was very young at that time, anyway.
About the Detroit thing, I guess it's the fame that keeps me away (and the lack of money too). Remember Bowling for Columbine? The part where Michael asks a policeman in Canada when was the last murder commited? The policeman answered that it was several years ago and performed by some men from Detroit that crossed the river... :D

Poor Thom, he's a lot more talented than that other guy, and much more attractive, even with his facial paralysis. I'd hate that comparision if I was in his shoes.
subterranean
02-23-2004, 09:39 PM
Well Chris that's why I stopped reading Roling Stone mags long time ago..And I was only compare him with Aiken phisically. For talent, this Aiken kid is a long way from Thom.
And of course Thom is whole lot more sexier than Aiken
