Hey,

I am preparing to do my independent study and it requires that I select a novel and a play. I believe the final essay asks to compare the two works in terms of tragedy of the central characters.

My question is.. has anyone read a novel and play that are similar in theme and plot, which would be quite easy to compare the two in an essay?? I'm looking for a fairly simple book as I am only in highschool. Any responses would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Kris.

The play is kind of new I think, Dear Ester , but I can't remember who the playwrite was. It made me think of the book Night by Elie Weisel. All about the holocaust, so sad! I cried during both.

I would suggest the Play Hamlet by william shakespear, and the novel, The Wars by Timothy Findley. It is a bit of a stretch but once you read both of them at the same time, it is esier to make connections between the two works.

The Stranger or The Outsider (depends on translation) by Albert Camus/ one of Sartre's plays. The Stranger is a really easy read, yet still really deep. Its a very bleak existential outlook on life, while Sartre is the father of Existentialism and a reputed playwrite. Has anyone read any of his plays? Recomendations of Sartre?
