I am in the middle of making my ISU Seminar about the 'Two minutes of hate' in 1984. Can anyone please help me by giving me any kind of information you may have on it? any ideas, any thoughts, any kind of explanation of it, also anything you may think about how it relates to Racial groups of today, would also be extremely good.
Anything would be helpful,
Thanks!

Baisically, the Two Minutes Hate is a Party enforced ritual that is there in order to redirect the repressed rage that exists within the Party members in Oceania as aresult of the terrible oppression etc. It is a process by which party members are whipped up into a frenzy of hated for the enemies of Big Brother.

Hope this helps!:thumbs_up

To be quite honest, the Two-Minutes Hate is the Party replacing Sex. (Administers don't get angry with me please i have a point to make) Imagine it as a slow uphill climb that starts getting steeper and steeper as it gets closer to the, say, one minute fourty five mark and once it gets there it takes a down hill plunge into a valley. Isnt it the same with sex? Work harder and harder until boom it comes to a climax and then down into a state of bliss. That is what the two minutes hate is.

The party wish to restrain all emotions, turning the citizens of Oceania into completely orthodox followers of the Party. They understand though, that it is pretty much impossible to completely block emotions, so, instead of allowing them to be expressed through love, compassion, loyalty to family/lovers etc, they instead force it to be expressed through total devotion to Big Brother and the party, and through a frenzied hatred of Goldstein and Eurasia/Eastasia carried out in the two minutes of hate, aswell as various rallies.

War is Peace.

Imagine if there wasn't a war.
What would there be? Chaos.
The party doesn't want chaos.

The party doesn't want chaos.

There would be peace...And then the Ministry of Peace would lose it's purpose; there job is to make peace, and you make peace by fighting wars. So they are always in war with somebody.

Also there would be a surplus of resources that the people would expect a part of, resulting in revolution - the ongoing war justifies the poverty of Oceania.

"This country has been having a nationwide nervous breakdown since 9/11. A nation of people suddenly broke, the market economy goes to ****, and they're threatened on every side by an unknown, sinister enemy. But I don't think fear is a very effective way of dealing with things -- of responding to reality. Fear is just another word for ignorance."

Sex .............. is work??
Well if 2+2 does not = 4 then of course war is peace.
'Also there would be a surplus of resources that the people would expect a part of, resulting in revolution - the ongoing war justifies the poverty of Oceania.'
True only there would be no revolution - as there wasn't in the former Soviet system - just a battered bewildered and vodka-soaked proletariat who have their reforms handed down to them by a more enlightened nomenclatura.

Katherine is quite right - in 1984 it's the only place where strong emotion may be safely displyed, which is why there is the juxtaposition of hate and love in the last few seconds, when Goldstein/Eurasia/Eastasia is replaced by Big Brother.

A conceivable similarity in today's context is to imagine a KKK member forced through circumstance to work with coloureds, or a coloured forced into working for a racist white family. Hate, resentment and jealousy will build and explode unless it is allowed an out. The KKK member may get his two minutes at a KKK meeting, while the coloured employee may work it out on a punching bag with the face of the farmer drawn onto it.
