I'm a high-schooler who is taking a college speech class through a nifty program that allows teens to start getting their college credits while still in high school. Here's the deal. I am 15 years old and I will need to write an informative paper using visual aids. Anything goes so long as it's safe, legal, college-level, and doesn't preach a faith. As it's for a college level audience, I'm a little stuck for a topic. Any ideas? Thanks

If anything goes then maybe something about one of your favorite books? Or is that too obvious? What are your areas of interest, what subjects are you interested in?

If you are enthusiastic about your subject matter for your speech, you will convey that enthusiasm and energy to your audience. They will appreciate you for it.

Perhaps you're enthusiastic about a certain political or social issue? try to go with what you know best that is also appropriate Make a list about things you know a lot about, hope that helps!

hmm. What do you guys think of a speech on Lebanon? My family comes from there and I am learning the language. That might go well.
Or, I am homeschooled. It might be a good idea to show that most homeschoolers are really serious about school.

Politics I'm not really interested in, and no one has heard of my favorite books! :argue:

I think homeschooling would be a fine topic. Since you are taking such an advanced class amongst college students you are living proof of the quality of your homeschool education. Lebanon would also be a good topic. I just think it is important to find something you care about, and are interested in. You can learn by doing research on a topic, but you can't fake enthusiasm. I just remember the extremely dry speeches I had to sit through during speech class and then how my ears perked up when somebody showed some energy and interest in their subject.

I guess the point I am trying to make (albeit a bit heavyhandedly) is a great deal of an effective speech is capturing your audience's attention. :)

Both of those topics sound great! It's good to have something you can put a personal spin on. Good luck with the speech! Tell us how it goes :)

thank you I will! I think I'm pretty much settled on homeschooling. My Mom suggested that I open the speech with something like this:

"My first day of school was January 16...2007. My first professionally trained teacher was Professor David Arovola."

Professor A. is the teacher of that class, and 2007, well, that's now! That ought to be an ear-grabbing opening!:D
