The general's family arranges such gatherings because their position demands them to do so. Riabovitch is a character to which an average common man can relate to, on many levels be it personal or social. But then, he did'nt linger on to the memmories of that "pleasant accident" though he was infatuated with that. What sense I made out of it is that we don't get too many things in life we crave for but then life does'nt end on that. There are other more beautiful things in life if one has a keen eye for them, and that he realizes while standing on that bridge.

All the characters in that story represent people from almost all social ranks. And if you cannot relate to Riabovitch then you might to the others characters mentioned.

Riabovitch knew that the party was'nt arranged willingly-the General's position demanded that.
