So I suprised myself I tend to avoid 'literary' books from a vague fear of pretention and general blahness but I did really enjoy Mrs Dalloway ( well oncce Id read the hours ) although on its own MRs D sailed right over my head. So I guess this is me admiting that yes there may be more to reading 'literary' books than struggling through confusing dense 'intelectual' usally depressing muddle.

Hehe...I used to really enjoy "literature" when I was younger and hadn't realized that it was "literature"...Earnest Hemingway was one of my first favorite authors, and I didn't even realize how old his stories were!
Now that I know "literature" when I read it, it takes some of the magic of ignorance away because I'm constantly analyzing plot, setting, characterization, etc. :p

Actually I was like that when I was younger; Scott, Austen, Edgeworth, fielding, Richardson, Twain, O. Henry, Jack london I loved them all now you wont get me near discussing them ( well other than austen) with a barge pole, well actaully I am discussing Shaw this months so who knows maybe the tide is changing.

One of the neatest things I've ever read about literature (forgot the original author) confirms why I like it so much:
Literature does not answer questions; in fact, it raises more than it answers.
That's why I believe you can keep coming back to a great book again and again - it keeps the dialogue between reader and book going.

I'm very excited to read _Mrs. Dalloway_, Night! I bought it a while ago, intending to sit down with some free time, but I haven't gotten to it yet. I've read _To the Lighthouse_ several times, and I think that book is mesmerizing and beautiful. Anyway, I'm glad you liked it, Night. You've piqued my interest in the book. "Literary" need not be something to shy away from. Some things are frightfully heady, but that can be very rewarding. If it's done right it allows you to climb inside someone else's head, and empathize with them, rather than simply skiing over the surface of a plot. And once you've climbed inside a great book like that, it's very difficult to keep your mouth shut about it.
That is a great quote, Red. (It is a quote, right?) It certainly holds true with Virginia Woolf.
