it could be because of their population: usually when a group out-numbers another, the larger succeeds. O'Brien disagrees because the Party is too powerful and much smarter than the proles. He believes the proles aren't smart enough to realize they could assemble and defeat the Party.

The hope lies in the proles because the proles are the only ones who remained human and have not been corrupted by the party, they are the only ones that could successfully change the system because they are outside it.

The proles were not only the largest group but they were largely unwatched and overlooked, they could get away with more if they bothered to because they had neither telescreens nor were they under the constant watch of the Thought Police.:yawnb:
