Most of you have been following my trials and tribulations of late regarding internet blocking/ laptop ordering/internet ordering/ music services/mp3 players. Now that that is all sorted out I need some new music.

I like all kinds of music, except R&B (some as long as it's peppy), that dark 80's stuff like The Smiths and Morrissey, instrumentals, and that singer/songwriter heartfelt crapola. Oh and no pop stuff like Mariah Carey or Jessica Simpson....although if it has a good beat perhaps I do kinda like that one Christina Aguilera song.

My favorites are The White stripes, 80's hair bands, Show Tunes and basically anything that I can sing along too. Any suggestions? If I can find it I will give it a listen.

I haven't been following your recent adventures with internet music, but you might find it helpful to scan the Now Playing thread for ideas.

Another way to get suggestions would be to try something like Pandora (http://www.pandora.com). It doesn't work that well for me, though.

I've been trying to find new music, too, since I realized that most of the bands that I enjoy listening to are no longer in existence. A few bands that are still in existence that I found I like are The Decemberists, The Postal Service, and Rilo Kiley. A couple of recent bands (but are no longer together) that I like are The Boo Radleys (yes, I'm old enough that I consider 15 year old music recent) and The Delgados.

If you like White Strips, you must like indie stuff and a few indie bands that I really like are The Shins, The Kooks, Cold War Kids (just discovered them!), Veruca Salt and The Blow.

dream theater, Dream Theater, DREAM THEATER!!!
They're about 20 years old as a band now, actually, but they are still making music "like the dickens". They've never really been bad at all, and they seem in many respects only to get better. (a matter of opinion, I suppose, but still...) Certainly not "pop", nor R&B. But there are a couple spots where he "raps", more or less, on the "Train of Thought" album, which annoy me to death. But other than that - fantastic. Quite technical, though.

I've listened to a bit of Dream Theatre, and I've never been able to hear anything but a band with tremendous technical skill and little to no feeling for music. It seems like they write songs as technically complicated as is imaginable without stopping to consider whether the end product will be good music. Maybe that's just me.

I recomend anything Icelandic, particularly Sigur-Rós, Björk and Múm.

The Blow reminds me of Blondie which is good. The Shins are on now so far so good.

Someone told me my fave. band sounded like the White Stripes, though since I don't know much about them I can't say whether this is valid. iTunes has their stuff under the band name FLAVOR. They've changed their name since then, but iTunes still has everything listed under that one. Their lead singer has a great voice, the songs have great beats and the lyrics are awesome. Unfortunately, they just disbanded because of the owner of their record label managed the group poorly, but I still love their songs.

Also a really amazing indie band is The Myriad. I discovered them recently and can't get enough. Everything about them is just wonderful. They are also listed on iTunes, and have a MySpace page so you can preview their stuff.

The Blow reminds me of the Tom Tom Club but I can see the Blondie reference. I'm glad you liked them! Sometimes the Shins can take a bit to grow on you, I didn't fully take to them on the first listen and Riesa had the same reaction but the more you listen to them, the more brilliant they become.

I don't know of many bands playing southern rock these days (or at least any bands willing to cop to it), but the Drive-By Truckers are playing it and playing it well. Some individual tracks you might preview:

Dead, Drunk, and Naked
The Southern Thing
Let There Be Rock
Decoration Day

They are slightlly more mellow than i would have expected.

Why don't you place your favorite bands in your Myspace profiles? I use this song code generator (http://www.profilepitstop.com/generators/song_code/index.php), which is convenient. I can just put the song as background and not embed any mp3 players.

Indie rock bands, by the way, really do rock!

I started liking the White Stripes after a while I got into The Strokes. I'd suggest them if you haven't heard them already.

[Obvious Reference]And The Beatles, of course. [/Obvious Reference]

I love Dream Theater! It's so rare to run into people who know about Dream Theater and I love finding fellow fans!
As far as new music; I hate it. I hate rap, I hate R&B, I hate rap-rock, I hate new "rock" groups. And it's not like I'm an old geezer, I'm 25 and in the target audience for the music industry. I will say though that in the past year or so, there has begun to be a bit of a resurgance of old school rock and metal and there was a lot of great new music by older rock and metal bands and some good stuff on the horizon for 2007. For about a five year span there, it seemed hopeless to me, but some good new semi-underground bands and old school bands has made music good again for me.

Trivium
Paramore
Mika

From the 90s
Rem (my fave is Automatic for the people but any Rem is good)
Pearl Jam (any album is great in my opinion)

From the 80s
Rem
Rush

From the 70s
Led Zeppelin, Jethro Tull, King Crimson, Deep Purple, Yes very different bands and all of them unique

If you think Dream Theater is too technical or complicated maybe you should check out the instrumental works of Frank Zappa, Allan Holdsworth or King Crimson. Maybe tribal tech as well or the Mahavishnu Orchestra. I like prog but i hate metal and the whole 80s sound kind of disgusts me (i grew up in the 90s). Id rather have the analog 70s sound any day.

Now if youre in the mood for some wild improv (Im a free jazz/improv fan):
cecil Taylor
King Crimson (the live improvisations)
John Zorn
Henry Cow (the live record)

And Tool of course!

Alice in Chains is one of my all-time favorites. As a guitar player, Jerry Cantrell is one of my idols (along with David Gilmour and, of course, Tony Iommi).

I'm a huge fan of AIC as well. One of the things that strikes me about them is the harmony. You don't always think harmony when you think of a heavier band like that but Lanye and Jerry do some amazing things vocally as well.

You must check out Eisley! Especially when their new CD comes out (mid/end May).

Anberlin, Flyleaf, and Paramore are good if you like borderline-heavy rock.

Midlake, Tegan and Sara, the previously mentioned Shins, Landon Pigg, (he's amazing) Pilot Drift, and Blesk are some good indie bands. Blesk is new but they're amazing...their lyrics and music are very nice, though the record quality is very poor. They're pretty soft sounding, with some points hinting at progressive rock (i.e. the song Adam and Eve which is really neat).

Imogen Heap is always good. She makes you want to sing along even on the impossibly bizarre and high notes.

I haven't had a chance to check out the rest of the music listed but I will (except I am Ghost only because they aren't free to download).

What I am really digging right now is The Misfits. (No not The Misfits of Science:lol: )

No dark 80s, no advice from Koa :D (actually, The Smiths fall into what I consider the bright side of my tastes... )

These days I like a band called Editors, though they're one of those bands à la Interpol (which instead I don't like) who are definitely inspired by Joy Division who in turn are dark (pre)80s so you might not like them :D
What about the British indie stuff like Kaiser Chiefs (thought I think that they have 3 or 4 amazing songs and the rest are stupid) and Franz Ferdinand (though I really don't like them, but oh well).
Oh, and the Killers, but maybe you know the Killers.

I guess it would really depend on what one considers “good music”. I can sort of understand this argument (though I think it depends on what you’ve heard), but I still hold that John Petrucci has one of the best senses of melody of anyone writing music at present. They’re music is indeed wildly complicated, but I’ve always found it rather fascinating. I like the feeling of really not knowing what to expect at any given moment upon first hearing a song, and of gradually getting to know all of the key changes and little rhythmic shifts that make each song what it is. It is, however, impossible really to make many generalizations about them, as they must have 80 or so songs now, no two really anything alike.
And then there’s that guitar solo at the end of “Octavarium”. Beautiful stuff… (awed silence)

I don't think it really exists anymore - officially, at least. You can sample everything three times on Napster now, but you have to pay to download.

Rhapsody will give you 25 free streams a month. No downloads unless you sign up (and even then, the files are protected), but it will at least give you a chance to wet your beak.
