i have to analyze this for my english class and im kind of confused with it:

You are the lighthouse, the seamark
The tempests created this tide
I’m pulled to the black silver ocean
where the current and the heavens collide

You are the brick
I am so unpredictable
led by the current away
Your solid stage is so necessary to save
all those who stray

You are the navigator who never could lead
we were lost in the silver sea
I was the ship who was too proud to ever sink.

I am your thought but the water is amnesia
my name is on the tip of your tongue
My image is slipping
oh, your memory is gripping it
this is my breath in your lungs

You are the navigator who never could lead
we were lost in the silver sea
I was the ship who was too proud to ever sink.

Echo, my voice is an echo
of places I don’t know
and stories I’ve been told

Echos. We all are connected
a lighthouse a voyage
for history’s sake,
would you please take notice?

i kind of understand the meaning of this, but i dont really understand some of the language the author uses such as tides and currents and stuff. can anyone tell me what tides and the sea, lighthouses, tempests, etc mean in poems. and also could you help me to point out some of the poetic devices used here. thank you :)

Maybe you can tell us first what meaning you have gotten out of it and we can help you from there? Also, do you know of and understand some poetic devices?

well i think this song is about a slightly dysfunctional relationship. one in which one person probably lives a very structured life and is very passive, and the other person lives on the edge and takes the other person to place they've never been and makes them do things they've never thought of doing. i think there is constantly conflict between the two because of their differing views on life, but in the end when it already too late, they realize that they sort of completed each other in a way. i dont know lol that probably doesnt make any sense :).

I think that's an excellent analysis of the poem!Makes perfect sense, same thing I got out of it. Just apply some of the meaning you make to the techniques used. It's a very strong metaphor, how does this metaphor evoke it's intended meaning? What personafication and imagery is used to make you think of a dysfunctional relationship?

well it says that "you are the lighthouse, the seamark" i figured that the lighthouse and sea mark kind of represents security because if someone was lost in the middle of the sea they would feel more secure when they saw that there was a lighthouse to guide their passage. i think his passivity is shown by the line "you are the navigator who never could lead." although he has the skill to navigate, he still gets them lost because of his inability to successfully lead a ship. i can't figure out what the lines " I’m pulled to the black silver ocean/ where the current and the heavens collide" means. also the poem seems to make sense up until the whole stanza about the water being amnesia, and breathing in your lungs. im so confused.....

i have to analyze this for my english class and im kind of confused with it:

Hi, cool, let's brainstorm together.

You are the lighthouse, the seamark =reason, the right track of life
The tempests created this tide =Natural forces, gods created fate
I’m pulled to the black silver ocean =my life is chaotic
where the current and the heavens collide =my life collide with gods' will

You are the brick =my reason or spirit is solid
I am so unpredictable =I'm emotions
led by the current away =drift with the current
Your solid stage is so necessary to save =only reason can save
all those who stray

You are the navigator who never could lead =my reason is not sober enough
we were lost in the silver sea = reason and emotion are both lost
I was the ship who was too proud to ever sink. =too proud to die

I am your thought but the water is amnesia =dying or died
my name is on the tip of your tongue = died and only spirit remains
My image is slipping =gone away
oh, your memory is gripping it =can spirit or ghost still memorize
this is my breath in your lungs =

You are the navigator who never could lead
we were lost in the silver sea
I was the ship who was too proud to ever sink.

Echo, my voice is an echo
of places I don’t know
and stories I’ve been told

Echos. We all are connected
a lighthouse a voyage

I can only say that this poem is about a person in one's life who keeps him or her grounded. If you have problems, this person guides you to your "redemption." When you are lost, this peson maneuvers you to the right direction. Tides, current, etc mean life in general. Trials, tribulations, problems, circumstances.

My opinion.

Don't know what the fuss is all about. This is an utterly banal and transparent piece, full of cliches, such as "lighthouse" and "silver sea," and inept use of language, such as "I am so unpredictable." Could there be a more unpoetic line? It's a second rate pop-song line without the music to disguise it. Inaccuracies too, since the tempests do no create the tides, the moon's magnetic force does, though I'll allow the poetic licence. Obviously not written by a student of geography. And pioussoul wants to read God into it all. I'd ask my English teacher to find better poems to "analyze!" I'm out of here!!!!!!
