just saw the movie and absolutely loved it - and I am not a big fan of romantic movies either--

anyways, i was wondering if anyone could recommend any MOVIES or books like "A Walk to Remember" that I would be interested in reading and are really good - so basically romantic books or movies, but certain kind of romance... anyone?

Hrm...well...I don't really do romance, but because you pointed out this story specifically I have to mention...

my little sister never, ever wanted to read until I told her to read "A Walk to Remember," and after that she begged me for more "good" books, meaning not stuff that she was assigned to read at school. I gave her "Lovely Bones" next and she was going crazy reading it. She gave it to my mom, who gave it to my grandfather (who normally only reads westerns!), who gave it to my aunt, who gave it to another aunt...one aunt said that she was photocopying the pages at work so she could read the story on paper and look like she was working instead of reading!

I don't know where it is now. It's not a romance, but it is a DARNED good book, imo. I'd recommend it.

hmm - i think ill stick to nicholas sparks. I am thinking of writing a novel myself one - you can say that "A walk to remember" kind of inspired me, It gave me ideas of my own and a new perspective on life - very deep... i just want to read a few romance novels before I actually go ahead, plan, and write my very own - which may never make it big, but I'll still feel it's an accomplishment :) this is why i need to know the best romance novels of all time - so I can take some inspiration from them and write my own - i have an idea, just have to develop it and I also have to see the writing style of romance novels to maybe write my own

You may want to try books by Diana Gabaldon. Voyager, Drums of Autumn, A breath of snow and ashes - those books are not just about romance, but also about advantures, time travel, history and humour.

Nicholas Sparks has a lot of good ones out there...A Walk To Remember, The Notebook, Message in a Bottle, etc. To me, the aforementioned are pretty classic "romances" -- his newest book is, imo, mediocre compared to his other works. They are all very simply written, but I thought the last one really lacked depth.

Another great love story is The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenenger (pretty unique last name so forgive me if my spelling isn't up to par). I am not normally into fiction- literature is my passion; but this book by far is my all time favorite.

Exactly. I love this book. It is so readable, yet so deep. You learn so much about life from this book. It is a really simple story, but I love how the world is seen through the girl's eyes after she dies. It is so realistic, you forget it is fiction. It is a really, really good book. I read Alice Sebold's memoir as well, and liked it, and it helps you understand her better.

Love the book and the movie! The Notebook, also by Nicholas Sparks, is also a must read but might be a bit explicit for younger readers! You could also never go wrong with classics like Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibilty by Jane Austin. ;)

this must be a chick thread. Nicholas Sparks writes trite romances for girls who like to cry a lot. They are overly sentimental and mundane and are nowhere near classic status. If you want to read a great romance, try Camille or the Lady of the Camellias by Alexandere Dumas fils, son of Alexandre Dumas. They also made a very good movie about it in the 1930s with Robert Taylor and Greta Garbo. Available on dvd. Or try Goodbye, Mr. Chips by James Hilton. A good book and a good movie with Robert Donat, an English actor, who took the acedemy award for best actor of 1939 away from Clark Gable in Gone with the Wind. I think the girl was played by Greer Garson. Available on dvd.

Not to sound like too much of a sap, but I'd like to take this chance to push my favorite 'forgotten' romance story of the 20th century: one that's not so soppy that men and women can't enjoy it.

Arch of Triumph by Enrich Remarche; the guy who wrote All Quiet on the Western Front. This I feel, having read most of his novels, is truly his best, and it's a shame I never seen it in bookstores anymore. This is the greatest 'love in the time of war' novel I've ever read, and will NOT let down anyone's expectations. He was a very talented writer, and more of his novels besides AQOTWF should be read. He and Gunter Grass I strongly feel are two Germany's best modern writers.

Oh, A Walk to Remember...
I just hated that one. The book and the movie. It was such a cheesy artifical novel with a poor excuse for a plot. That "just promise not to fall in love with me..." and other nonsense just made me sick.
There's a book called Love Story(don't remember who's the author) with a similar plotline.
That's the only thing that comes up to mind.

named Erich Segal. It was made into an equally trite movie starring Ryan O'Neal. However, the plot of the movie was the harbinger of things to come with O'Neal. Witness his true life love affair with Farah Fawcett.
