Hi Ranoo:

I prefer novels myself over all others, but I also enjoy reading poetry and drama on occasion. I find it easier to immerse myself in a novel, and that is very enjoyable for me.

Fiction is still the one for me. You can make up ANYTHING. Creativity runs amok. There are no limitations.

I love the novel as an art form. I think it captures the complexity of experience best. Before people attck me, I'm sure I'm biased. ;)

Ranoo, I think you could have mentioned short stories, which I feel are a differrent genre than novels.

Edit: Oh, I didn't know you can vote for more than one. I would have picked them all. ;)

I love novels. Anything I can stick my nose into, and ignore the rest of the world for longer is better. :p

My least favourite genre is probably poetry. I try really hard, but I just don't get the fuss over most poems written before 1914 and don't get most poems written after that...
So my favourite would have to be novels and non-fiction:)

Novels. I usually read fiction, but I do enjoy a biography or history book every now and then. Poetry is all right when I feel like it.

I love reading it all. I dont think i could make any preference, I think i read them all equally too. Usually go back and forth between play and novel and read some poetry here and there.

Novels. I find it easier to engage myself with novels and it gives me a chance to really get to empathise and understand the characters. I find that they involve a lot less thinking a lot of the time, because everything is presented to you, and it's more relaxing.

Having said that, I love analysing plays and poems because it really gives me an opportunity to look at them in depth. I dunno. Plays and poems don't hold the same recreational value for me as novels.

Recently, I've found myself becoming quite fond of biographical stuff, too. Not so much the stuff that chronicles someone's life, but when it's well written and the prose is elegant, descriptive and vivid.

Poetry. Is that a first?

I love writing and reading it. Poetry can hold so many secrets, and my favourite novels are like that as well.

I am, however, an actor so I almost put drama before deciding that reading it and performing it were two different things.

Novels for me. I'm apparlingly bad at poetry and drama only stands out when performed by very good actors.

poetry. I love it. I think it expresses many feelings that can never go into prose, and it is eternally relevant.

Novels. I like short stories too. I don't really enjoy reading drama actually - plays are written to be enacted, not read. I like some poetry...but usually I prefer for it to be read aloud to me like Walt Whitman said - I wish I could go to public readings...

Novels and plays. It's all about character development...I can deal with an epic poem once in a while as well, but I really don't like poetry in general.

Short stories are my favorite, although I love novels as well. Nothing beats a well written short story.

Long novels are my favorite as I like to immerse myself in the story and get inside the heads of the characters. I'm usually sad when I finish a good novel.

I cannot deny I love all the literary genres, however in recent times I should have to say I have been rather fond of plays, because stage direction/ narration and direct commentary from the playwright adds much to the plot and character development of the story. Novels, however, can carry so much description that a lot of other literary forms simply cannot handle (I don't intend to criticize any form of literature. I love it all!).

Poetry, though the ultimate is my favorite, Eugene Onegin, capturing poetry and a novel all in one.

For reading, I prefer novels and short stories.

But every time I tried to write one... after I deleted all words that seemed useless and superfluous... the result was nice and short poem. :D

Lenghty poetic works tend to be my literary favourites, as they often present the best of the language they are written in, and as such can be enjoyed profoundly; when I read, I search not only to get enjoy the contents, but the form and the language as well. Therefore, at any moment I am ready to choose, say, "La Divina Commedia" or "Paradise Lost" over a great novel, as I simply love to read in verse, and as verse seems to be, to say so, the most "congenial" with my innermost.
I greatly enjoy shorter poetic forms as well, but I must admit that I am quite demanding in this aspect, and not many things I truly love and admire.

Secondly, I tend to love works which are poetry/drama mixture - written in the form of drama, but in verse, for example "Faust" or Calderón de la Barca's "Life is a dream".
I am not really a lover of drama as a form, unless it is written in verse; certainly, there are exceptions, but not many of many.

When it comes to prose, I tend to enjoy it in greater "doses", thus I will always prefer novels to short stories, novellas and similar forms; however, as said earlier, I am much more of the verse type than prose type, and even though I read a lot of prose, that which truly fulfills me are poetic forms.

I prefer drama over poetry and novels. I love going to the theatre and having the possibility of a 'common experience' of fiction watching a well constructed play, life condensed to two hours, rather than reading a lengthy novel alone in my solitary chamber :D. For the same reason of brevity and witty reduction, I also appreciate short stories.
Though I've been reading some poetry recently and must say I'm not averse to that, either :).

I used to read exclusively novels but since joining this site, I've discovered the joys of short stories. I still struggle with poetry, Riesa has tried to take me under her wing to explain the finer points of the genre but I'm turning out to be a slow learner. :p
