Hi everybody, Happy New Year!
I have started an IRC channel for Litnet members. *EDIT* This is not an official channel of the forum, just something informal for members. Please direct questions or problems to me, not forum staff. Thanks! :D
You will not need special software to join and chat, you can use your browser. You will need to have java and javascript enabled however. In Internet Explorerer and Firefox this should be under tools, not sure about Netscape. At any rate, unless you have specifically disabled java, you should be running it already. You will be able to be chatting and still browse other sites as well.
1.) Go here (http://www.dal.net/index.php3?NICKNAME=Guest13903) and sign in as a guest. 2.) Change your nickname (see instructions below). 3.) Join the channel.
Important: In the interest of keeping the channel for Litnet members, please PM me with a request for the channel name. No offense to our guests reading this, but ... just trying to keep things for members as much as I can.
This is basically what a channel looks like, minus all the black oblongs. :) User names are on the right, and the "conversation" is on the left.

I am making the following requests:
Please, no heated discussions. The channel is for hanging out and chatting, and things could get out of hand very quickly if arguments start.
I am going to try to keep the channel for Litnet members, but it is still available to anybody who might decide to pop in. Since that is the case...Use common sense. Don't disclose private information about yourself. This is a public channel which means anybody could be there. If somebody asks you something private in channel and you feel like answering I suggest you have them send you a private message here at Litnet so you can verify that they are who they say they are, ie a Litnet member.
No file sharing
If somebody posts a link, don't feel as if you MUST visit the link. It might be a perfectly ordinary link, or who knows (?)
If you fall into an alternate universe, get kidnapped by aliens or have a bad experience on IRC please don't blame me...I am trying to do something nice, but I am by no means a computer genius. I cannot take responsibility if your head explodes. ;)
irc commands are preceded by a backslash /
To join the channel --channel names are always preceded by a # and there will be no spaces.
type in the following:
/join #channelname
NICK new-nickname
Change the nickname by which you are known. Nicknames are usually limited to 9 characters. For example, if your default nick was "foo" and you want to change it to "YourNick":
/NICK YourNick
*** foo is now known as YourNick
So when first logging on as a guest, you will be prompted to change your nickname as "guest" is not going to be a valid one. Please note that everytime you use the java client you will be "guest" but it takes two seconds to change your nickname. Spaces are not allowed, but underscores are. It would be in our best interests to have nicknames that will identify us to our fellow Litnet members. For example, say I am Nightshade logging on as guest. I will type out:
/NICK Night
OR
/NICK Night_1
Once your nickname is changed you can start chatting. Everything typed out will have your name right before it so everyone knows what who is saying what. Basic commands--irc commands are preceded by a backslash /
to indicate an action type:
/me waves to everybody
To everybody else in the channel, it will look like "kathycf waves to everybody"
/me blushes
"kathycf blushes"
/me sips coffee
"kathycf sips coffee"
