I really want to do something tonight for new years but have no-one to do anything with :flare:
This year i will resolve to get my license, pass the 2nd year of my course with flying colours (gotta aim high, right?), and to get and stick at a part time job. I dunno what else yet.

Do u have any plans to celebrate the passing of yet another year, Dramasnot? Are u really 14 btw?

Still 11 hours left as I write this...

Party plans: Limited to a nice quite evening with the missus and our daughter. Good food, some wine for me and wifey, and some bubbly stuff for midnight.

Resolusions: I hereby declare that I will make no new year resolutions (I never do).

New Year Sonnet

Another circle round the old Milky Way,
Doesn’t time seem to go by so fast now?
Seems like it was June only yesterday—
A whole New Year is upon us now…
We’ll keeping making mistakes in our checkbooks
Putting down ’06 when it comes to the year.
By February we start thinking just how young we looked—
When we went on holiday. (God, was that Last Year?)
But we’ve met new friends that we have grown to love,
Formed stronger bonds with others we already knew.
Shared our hopes, visions, dreams, and a few arguments,
But what we really needed was friends like you.
So to all of you on the LitNet from the bottom of the Dragon’s heart:
Here’s to a Happy New Year and a brand new start…

In 5 of the last ten minutes of my year i read one of my favorites, "If", by Rudyard Kipling. I just wanted to post it, thought it would be a very appropriate New Year poem

[IF]

If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you
But make allowance for their doubting too,
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don't deal in lies,
Or being hated, don't give way to hating,
And yet don't look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream--and not make dreams your master,
If you can think--and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you've spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build 'em up with worn-out tools:

If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it all on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breath a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: "Hold on!"

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you;
If all men count with you, but none too much,
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds' worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that's in it,
And--which is more--you'll be a Man, my son!

--Rudyard Kipling

I think I did this last year too. I wish to post the words to Beethoven's fifth movement (the Ode To Joy movement) in his nineth symphony. The fifth movement ties together the Catholic tradition of church music and the Protestant tradition of church music, which of course had split apart. It comes after four movements of angst and turmoil. In its time it represented the peace between the two after a couple of centuries of brutal religious war and stife. The nineth symphony has now come to represent a desire for world peace and for the univerality of mankind. I think here at lit net we of so many diverse backgrounds can be an example for the world that now is again in strife. I didn't post the entire thing, but you can look them up here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Symphony_No._9_(Beethoven)

German original
O Freunde, nicht diese Töne!
Sondern lasst uns angenehmere
anstimmen und freudenvollere.
Freude! Freude!
Freude, schöner Götterfunken
Tochter aus Elysium,
Wir betreten feuertrunken,
Himmlische, dein Heiligtum!
Deine Zauber binden wieder
Was die Mode streng geteilt;
Alle Menschen werden Brüder,

English translation
Oh friends, not these tones!
Rather let us sing more
cheerful and more joyful ones.
Joy! Joy!
Joy, thou glorious spark of heaven,
Daughter of Elysium,
We approach fire-drunk,
Heavenly One, your shrine.
Your magic reunites
What custom sternly divides;
All people become brothers

HAPPY NEW YEAR AND MAY THE WORLD FIND PEACE

The black haired bit refers to the scottish custom of first-footing. This is going to visit the homes of friends/family just after the "bells", it is good luck if the first visitor to step into your home in the new year has black hair, as opposed to blond/fair hair as in the past they were more likely to be a bunch of vikings come to raid, rape & pillage.

I think I did this last year too. I wish to post the words to Beethoven's fifth movement (the Ode To Joy movement) in his nineth symphony.

Thanks for posting that Virg. You inspired me to download my cd of the 9th onto the new ipod I got for Christmas, and I'm rocking out to Beethoven right now. :D I can't resist unleashing my pedantic side for a moment though. The symphony only has four movements, not five. I wish you were right though, since it would be great if there were more of it. :) Incidently, if you're a fan of the piece, you might be interested in this video lecture I found recently on the Harvard@Home alum site. The site has films of Harvard Profs lecturing on different subjects, sort of a virtual classroom, and this one has about ten video shorts (roughly three hours altogether) specifically on Beethoven's 9th. I haven't gotten a chance to watch it all, but it looks interesting. http://athome.harvard.edu/dh/Kelly.html

Still 2006 for another twelve hours and fifteen minutes here, but Happy New Year to those who are already living in next year. :)

I've had my iPod now for a few months and I absolutely love it. I haven't gotten to downlaoding my classical and jazz yet. Just about coompleted rock and blues collection.

I guess technically you're right. But the Ode to Joy seems like such a break within the fourth movement, I always think of it as a fifth movement. Plus my CD divides it in five channels, one for each movement and one for the Ode To Joy. But you are correct; there are only four movements.
