Hey everyone! As you know, I'm brand-spankin' new around here and I thought I would take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am from rural Nebraska, which doesn't necessarily lend itself to cultural experience. Pretty much beef and beer around here, so I thought this would be a fantastic place to meet some people who may have read books they weren't assigned in high school. Most of all I'm looking for discussion.
I love most all literature; novels, poetry, short story, ect. My favorite book of all time is Dracula by Bram Stoker. However my favorite author is JRR Tolkien.
So, I'm definitly looking forward to chatting with all of you.

Hi there, Adudaewen  (sounds Elfish, your name. Is it ? I dimly remember that -wen in Quenya means girl, so I assume you are female ? :))
Welcome on board !

Me too, I enjoyed Dracula very much, though I just couldn't read it in the evenings :p. There are a lot of other Tolkien fans around here, so you'll definetely find some like-minded discussion partners .

Hope you'll stay with us, we're looking forward to getting to know you better!
Welcome again !

Thanks so much for the heads up, there B-Mental. I'll definitly keep that in mind. I did notice, however that you did not mention what level of caution to have around you. I'll give you the benefit of the doubt, and consider mild to moderate. ;)
And thank you Schokokeks. You are correct in assuming my name is of Quenyan descent, and -wen is a feminin suffix as is -ial and -iel. I know there were more, but I can't remember them off the top of my head.
Dracula scared the crap out of me the first time I read it. I was about 9 or 10 I think. Ever since then, I've read it about once every 1 to 2 years. I also intend to name my first son Quincey Morris, as the character is one of my favorite in literature.
Well, blah blah, sorry I got off on a tangent there. Thank you both for your warm welcome and I look forward to chatting with you further. :)

Welcome aboard--was a young teenager when I finally got to read Dracula. The castle scenes in the beginning is my favorite section. Roy Thomas of Marvel Comics was able to finish the comics adaptation about a year or so ago (which was started in Dracula Lives magazine around 1974(?). Black and white and well done.

Lord of the Rings also read as a kid and read to my children when they younger and still willing to listen--(young parents a warning--sixth grade is the cut off for respect from the little ones) and I still remember my son going nuts when he thought Gandalf was a goner in the Balrog portion.

Most the regulars seem social here-I'm still a newby myself lurking around here and there. haven't been stomped on yet and I get a little cranky occasionally.

Again welcome.

Hello, Adudaewen. We're both the newbies here--I just joined today, as well--so I'm glad to have you around.

I have not read Dracula, but before you shake your head in disbelief, I have a VERY good reason for avoiding that particular book--it's all Stephen King's fault! Yes, my sister, the avid reader, loved Stephen King, and she left a copy of Salem's Lot laying around. I would caution anyone under the age of THIRTY to think carefully when considering reading that book. Scared the bejeezus out of my then-eleven-year-old self.

Now that I'm considerably older, I may venture to read Dracula. In fact, it has sparked my attention since I read The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova. If you have not read her novel, I would reccomend it--especially since you've esteemed Dracula as a favorite--as her novel is described as The Da Vinci Code meets Dracula. It's an interesting blend of fact and fiction--I quite enjoyed it.

Welcome. I look forward to chatting with you. BTW, we're practically neighbors (I live in Colorado). ;)

Cheers!
AG

Welcome Adud. You seem to have made yourself at home already. Great! I think you will like it here. I've never actually been to Nebraska, but I think I've been to all the surrounding states. I kind of picture Nebraska as a sort of a more rugged Minnesota.

However my favorite author is JRR Tolkien.

I'm quite a Tolkien fan myself. I usually try to hide the full extent of my Tolkien geekiness, but it comes out every now and then. ;) It's always nice to meet another fan.

My parents fled Nebraska, clutching me and my baby brother in their arms, when I was three. I have very little memory of it, but have heard many horror stories from my parents about scraping ice off the INSIDE of the windshield in the winter and enduring many awkward conversations borne from the fact they were neither Catholic nor football fans. Anyway, I praise your bravery and welcome you!

To SummerSoltice:

The stories of ice on the inside car windshield are VERY true. Spent June 1973 - April 1985 in Grand Forks AFB ND. I'll take Ohio winters anytime.

Sheese B, just trying to figure out when I got on your bad side. And I can't even beat up my younger brother to any effect, so, considering there are miles and miles between us (and the above), you are perfectly safe. :) Adud, do you have a name you'd rather be called? There have got to be better options! :)

Wow, thank you all for the welcome

Autumngal you should muster up the courage to attempt Dracula. It is wonderful, and not nearly as scary as Salem's Lot (which scared me too!) Its always nice to meet a neighbor. Enjoying all the snow??? Thank you for the recommendation, by the way. I'm definitly going to try Elizabeth Kostova. Sounds very interesting!

Idril I tried for years to hide my geekiness, but it finally reared its little head. Actually its quite liberating ;)

Virgil I've not been to Minnesota, so I have not basis of comparison. However, there's really not too much that is rugged about Nebraska. Its pretty flat, at least where I am in the extreme west of the state. Most people say that it is boring, but I actually find Nebraska to be quite beautiful. We have rolling hills and on a clear day, I bet I can see all the way to Kansas, Colorado or Wyoming ;)

And yes, the winters tend to be quite brutal. They haven't been so bad in a while, but this year sure was. We just got another 61/2 inches of snow ontop of the 5 we got only a week ago.

Summersolstice I understand why your parents escaped. Its really hard being neither Catholic or a Husker fan. I swear I'm like the only person in town who doesn't plan their life around Husker football. Its like a carnal sin. I get very strange looks and people give you quite a large berth when you don't wear red on a Husker day. *sigh* Its not an easy life. ;)

And Zanna Adud works fine for me, or Jax is what everyone else calls me. Either or.:thumbs_up

Welcome Adud,
Bram Stoker's Dracula is indeed a good book. I've read it and I've seen a few movies based on it but they aren't as good as the book itself. :-)
