In this game someone says a concept or word like "romance" or "fly" and the next person has to share their best memory involving that word and give a word of their own. The person after them shares their worst memory involving that word.
For example someone gives me "shoe", i then share with them my best memory of "shoe". I then say "money" and the PBM describes their worst memory involving money.

Ill start, someone shares their best memory involving this one:

Are we on best or worst?

I'll give you worst, since I have no "best" Death memories.

I caught the first man I ever "seriously" dated cheating on me (again) and we got into a HUGE fight. Some of the things I told him were "get out of my life", "I hate you" and "drop dead". He then hopped onto his motorcycle and drove away. On his way home he lost control of the bike and crashed into a tree. They think he survived for several hours; but nobody found him until morning and by then he had bled to death. My awful, hateful words were the last that he ever heard. (This is something that I will never be able to forgive myself for and I can't believe that I'm sharing it with LitNet)

O.K. now that everybody is in a cheery mood; let's have a "BEST" memory of......... PARENTS.

Winter(worst memory)

Another "worst" for me......
You all are going to think I'm a real downer.......

While fishing out in the Bering Sea two years ago, we were faced with a terrible winter storm that produced some frighteningly large waves. The youngest & newest member of my crew was swept overboard by a huge wave (he had neglected to fasten his safety tether) and we were unable to find him for nearly half an hour. After what seemed like the longest twenty-five minutes of my life we located him & got him back onboard. He suffered severe hypothermia & very nearly died. After almost 2 weeks in hospital he was declared fit and came back to work. Needless to say he uses his tether now even in the calmest of seas.

While this story comes out alright in the end; I was in a panic for 25 minutes & feeling horribly guilty for a couple of weeks after that.

My gosh...what a story biblio! You must have been so wrecked inside for that time, must have felt like hours of agony instead of just minutes....

My best vacation was definetly in Venice. Everyday just walking along the water, eating magnificent food, looking at beautiful artwork. although it was expensive, we still took a gondola ride at sunset! Most enchanting thing....

Venice sounds wonderful..... would love to see it..... Closest I've gotten is Paris (also wonderful)

Worst memory of greed: MY OWN
Three years ago I was having a FANTASTIC streak of luck catching crab. The amount that any one boat/company can take in is strictly regulated; but my boat hadn't been spot checked in ages and my hold was overflowing so I figured.... "just this one time, I'll sneak in a few extras". It honestly WAS the only time I ever over-caught & did not throw the extras back. Got to port, got inspected, got fined, lost my crab license for three years.

No one to blame but myself & my own greed. I was a BAD BOY!

YAY!! not only are more people getting interested in this thread; but I get to tell a HAPPY memory for a change. :D

(For a change, this won't be a fishing story.)

Hats: My grandmother LOVED to buy & wear hats. The more outrageous the better. Big flowing sun hats, little pill box hats with wild decorations, things with veils, big flowery hats.... you name it. My grandfater patiently indulged her even though they could hardly afford to spend money on anything that was not absolutley essential. One Christmas Gramma showed up (quite proud of herself) in a hat that had a birdcage on it with a LIVE canary in the cage!! Everyone laughed at the sight (she loved the attention) and you sould see the look in Grandpa's eyes that said "I married a crazy woman"

To this day I think fondly of Grandma every time I see an old woman wearing stylish head gear.

Your grandma sounds like such a cool woman! We really ought to bring back the eccentric hat trend to modern style :p

This is a hard one since i do not drive. Hmm. Oh, i remember. When I was 6 years old my father was picking me up from school because we had been let out early due to a horrible snow storm. It would normally take him 45 minutes to get home, but the traffic was so incredibly bad that it ended up taking us 6 hours! The worst thing is that for 5 of those hours i needed to go to the bathroom, but amazingly I held it in till we got home. I was one mad 6 year old though...

I was working on a site in monaghan and the night before i left to go to a new site i made beef Burritos for eight of the people i worked for. It was the most successful nite of cooking i'd ever had and everyone loved them. i'd made an aweful lot of spicy mince and when i went in to work for my last day two of the people i'd cooked for the night before( I'd cooked it in their house) were sitting in the hut at lunch time eating the cold left overs and telling people to try it!

Okay worst encounter/memory with/of a teacher...

Idril
01-10-2007, 08:46 PM
As a pastor's daughter in a small town, the teachers didn't dare be too nasty to me, I think they were worried they'd be damned to hell if they did. However, the teachers at my high school were not, as a general rule, a nice bunch and I did get caught up in a little trouble defending a class mate. There was this one kid in our class who was tiny, came from a very odd family and was just generally horribly picked on. The senior and junior high were in the same building and we (at that time) Jr. High kids stuck mainly to our own hall but we had to go through the Sr. High halls to get to art class and the older kids would wait for this poor kid to take that turn into "their" hall and then they would chase him down and stuff him in a locker and he would be left in there for however long it took for someone to hear him screaming and let him out. The teachers knew this was going on and yet let it continue and often left him in the locker. One day when this had happened, he came into art class late and the teacher. Mr. Olson, yelled at him for being late and gave him detention. When I pointed out he can't very well get to class on time when he's stuck in a locker and that it was, therefore, unfair to penalized him, the teacher gave me detention as well.

Ok now someone give their best memory/interaction with a teacher

dramasnot6
01-11-2007, 07:57 AM
How horrible Idril...that is so unfair!

Best with a teacher? Well in 6th grade I had a wonderful teacher named Mr.Zirkle (whom we called Mr.Z) who had really nurtured my theater and writing interest. Every morning we had our "shakespeare quote of the day" in which we'd take turns giving eachother quote's from a Shakespearian play and guess as to which one it was. We would do this every morning when i came into school and it was just the best of fun! I would also keep a notebook of quotes I would make up and little verses I'd write and he was always ecstatic to hear my new ones. I look back at them now and they were actually really bad but at the time it gave me a real confidence boost. :)

Worst memory of playgrounds

BibliophileTRJ
01-11-2007, 09:43 AM
Idril - luckily that kind of bullying is no longer tolerated in schools these days. If it were; that kid might just emerge from the locker with a shotgun.

I wish I had a teacher like Mr. Z.......and maybe some of Niamh's burritos, too.

My worst playground story happened every time the kids chose teams for sports. A teacher would choose two kids to be the "captains" of opposing teams; then in turn they would pick which kids got onto which team. Before I proceed, I should tell you that I was the fat clumsy kid with big thick glasses and few or no friends. (you can see where this is going) The anxiety of NEVER being chosen until very last (often chosen AFTER the kid in the wheelchair) was horrible; and this happened on a regular basis.

I want to take this opportunity to break the rules of this thread and also post my BEST playground memory. It was the same situation as above, but this time the game was different & we had to solve puzzles, math problems, and riddles in order for our team to move on to the next task. One of the "captains" was the most popular/handsome/athletic boy in my class and he chose ME FIRST to be on his team. I fell in love with that boy (Jim Fitzpatrick was his name) that day and had a crush on him for the rest of our school years together.

OK now a best memory of: friendship

Idril - luckily that kind of bullying is no longer tolerated in schools these days. If it were; that kid might just emerge from the locker with a shotgun.

I know! I think our school was just a bad place, my brother said he always thought all schools were like that until he went to college and got some seriously strange looks when he would talk about teachers stuffing kids in lockers and hitting kids and throwing things at them. He said, that's when he realized, we came from a terrible school. When our class had their 10 year reunion, we received from that poor, picked-on kid a scathing letter about how horribly his childhood was and how emotionally scared he still was from his experiences in school and ask why we thought he would want to have anything to do with a reunion. It was a nasty, angry letter but we all understood why he wrote it. He did show up for the 20th reunion though and I think everyone was happy to see him there.

OK now a best memory of: friendship

It's hard to just pick one memory. I've had some very good friends, not a lot but I have been very lucky to have some wonderful friends that have stayed with me all my life. I think what I'll go with is this: I have 2 close friends I have known pretty much all my life, one I met when we were 3 and the other I 'knew' as early as infanthood. We stayed close even though I moved to a different town when I was 15, we stayed close during college even though we were all in different states and then when we were in our early 20's we decided to all move to Minneapolis and live together which had been something we'd talked about since...we were able to conceive of a time when we wouldn't live with our parents. That first month we were living together was everything we thought it would be, it was like a dream come true. Unfortunately, things ended badly but that first month was almost worth the pain to come. :p

Worst Winter

I was 8. My best friend and nearest neighbor (Dave) lived 4 miles away. Told Mom that I was going over to Dave's house to play. She said "No..... it's a blizzard out there." After several minutes of whining & pleading she relented & let me go. After nearly an hour of trudging through knee-deep snow I reached my friend's house. Nobody home. DRAT! I turned around & walked back home (another hour in snow that was by now half-way up my thighs) When I got home....... NOBODY HOME! Mom had gone out to pick up my sister from band practice. Mom & Sis got stuck in a snowdrift on their way home so it was nearly 4 hours before anyone with a key arrived.
I lost two toes to frostbite that day, and have scars on my cheeks & nose from it to this day.

Now give me a BEST winter memory.

Well best winter memory is a bit hard but Im opting for 3 winters ago (early 2004) actually 3 years this month. Wed just moved to the England and we were in his horrible little temporary place because the idea was to come see if we like the town and then buy a place . It must have been around 7ish and started to snow, one of my sisters noticed it and then we were all out in the street and I never realised before that snowflakes actually look like snowflakes( hadnt seen snow since I was 2) and it was I cant describe it like magic. Actually the pic in my profile is from that night its one of my favourites ( obviosly the colours is been taken out etc) but yes amazing night.

Snow is like magic Night, i love it :)

My worst memory would have to be a few years ago when my family and I were on a vacation and had gotten to England realy late at night. Of course, we hadnt eaten much when travelling and were jet lagged anyway so at around 11pm we were starving. We walked to the place that was open closest to our house, I remember it was an Indian restaurant, which was suprisingly busy because there was some big party going on. It took the waiter maybe 30 minutes to take our order and then we waited for a full hour. We noticed by then people who had just entered got served earlier then us and told so to the waiter but he just got very indignant and mad. Then a whole 1 hour 45minutes after we ordered the party left and we got our food but they only let us eat for 20 minutes because they were closing up.

Wait till I get to the story about how I lost my fingers.......

My best restaurant story is my second anniversary.

My partner & I went out to a VERY swank restaurant to celebrate. We were early since we had tickets to a play at the theatre next door. Since we were one of the first tables filled, we were getting excellent service. As soon as or meals were served the lights went out....... there was a city-wide black-out!! Anyone who had not been served was asked to leave the restaurant; while those that were served (us & one other table) were invited to finish their meals by candle-light.

Since our play was obviously cancelled (theatre had no power either) we stayed in the restaurant for HOURS chatting by candle-light and drinking bottle after bottle of wine. It was THE most romantic night I have ever had.

I've travelled a lot, and mostly had really good memories...
There haven't been any bad ones, over the years they've become humorous memories, but i'll tell you of a crazy journey...

This summer I was travelling across europe with my boyfriend, and we were taking the from Poprad in slovakia to Iasi in Romania, a journey of over 29 hours...
after 19 hours of travelling, we're sitting in a town called Cluj-Napoca waiting for the train to Iasi.the regional 1839 arrives, and for some reasons, all the occupants seem to be standing at the windows, in the hallway, rather than sitting in the kupe's. I'm thinking, why the hell are they standing up at 1.08 AM to look at Cluj station...?
it seemed quite silly, and even more annoyingly, it made movement within the corridors impossible, can't pass people with our huge rucksacks! This really pissed me off, an imbecile action, with the sole purpose of paralysing movement in the corridors!
Well, that was of course a foolish reaction, the locomotive constipation was in fact caused by a lack of seats. since there were no seats, and no space in the corridors, we were forced to "camp" between the two carriages. next to the toilet, (in which, speaking of constipation, someone had endured diarreah, without remedies for cleaning up, or perhaps the will, which the mess considered sounds quite reasonable)
Having accepted the circumstance, 10 hours of standing in this place, we settled down, i sat next to the door, and watched it suspiciously ( i could see a slither of stars, and ventilation in romanian trains usually implies doors that can't really close)
Suddenly the door did swing completely open, it was quite unclosed! My boyfriend whom was standing ½ meter from me dove to hold on to myself and our luggage, whilst I fought against the force of the wind to close the door again, whilst the landscape streamed by underfoot.
That was the first time it opened, unable to talk due to the infernal racket of the "between train compartment", staunched in the smell of urin, a light flickering above us, and a door that liked to be breezy, and showing us the "great outdoors".
We were now 1 hour into the 10 hour journey...

In retrospect, i don't even think of it as a bad experience!

I was about eight years old and I was helping my grandmother hang clothes on the clothes line outside. It was a beautiful day. About an hour after we hung the clothes to dry it began to sprinkle. Me and my Grams ran outside to save the clothes from the rain...Once we ran out it started to pour on us HARD! I remember my grandmothers face at first she was shocked but then she started laughing so hard it was contagious. We both thought we were going to die of laughter. Then I remember she told me " We're already wet, how bout we have some fun?"...

We danced and played in the rain for two hours...I was barefoot but my grandma was wearing socks and they were completely soaked and muddy...LOL....Oh yeah, and then we both caught a cold. But we had such a good time it was worth it. That is one of my best childhood memories :)

Your memory sounds very lovely too LPR! I wish my granny was that fun!

I think it's turn for a worst memory though? I hope you dont mind if I make it worse memory of love!
Let's see...
It wasn't MY love story really, more of a friends but it deeply effected me. About a year ago one of my best friends starting dating this horrid creature who did (and still does) every imaginable drug, smokes, shoplifts, the whole wretched lot. After about 6 months he had broken up with her because he said he was "bored" of her and it absolutely broke her heart. She then came to me completely devastated for a good 2 months, and discovered that this guy had even cheated on her while they were going out. It broke MY heart to see her like this and I spent those months putting huge time and effort into making her realize that he wasnt worth it and she deserved better. The worst memory was when she got back together with him right after I wrote her a poem summarizing what a fantastic person and friend she was without having to have a boyfriend like that. I felt like my love and effort as a friend was rejected.

Ok, NOW best memory of LOVE :)

While vacationing in Paris last fall, my partner (Bob) & I were seated in a very crowded cafe right next to another American couple. Bob & I live in Alaska; the other couple live in Florida.......through the course of the conversation we discovered that she & I were both born in the same hospital in Oklahoma, on the same day, about two hours apart.

It took my all day to make them up (the ph was the problem) Anyways at the end of the day I asked if it took a long time to do that and my boss said "Yes, it took a very long time I hope you can get faster". I was completely worried I wouldn't do good in a real job. Once I got the hang of things it went pretty well.

Worst memory of: Snow

My sister and I were driving with my then, 3 year old nephew back to Minneapolis after having spent Thanksgiving with our parents in ND. Through ND we kept hearing about his horrible snow storm that was blanketing ND and Minnesota but we were at the ND/MN border and there was not a flake to be seen so we decided we would keep going and see how far we could get, which in retrospect was a really stupid idea. :p About 30 miles outside of Fargo, you couldn't even see the front end of the car because of the snow and the wind. I was driving, going only about 20 miles an hour, hoping to find an exit ramp and then all of the sudden my sister said, "Oh sh**" and I look and there are cars everywhere, to the left, to the right, straight ahead. Even going 20 mph, there was no way I could stop and not hit something and hit something I did, about 3 cars before I came to a stop and then as soon as we stopped, about 4 more cars hit us. We needed to get out of the car because the cars were just piling up but my nephew was in the backseat and since it was warm in the car, he didn't have his coat on or boots or anything and it was about -80 degrees with the windchill. While my sister panicked () I grabbed my nephew and his winter clothes and some wonderful women had a blanket I could wrap him up in and led us to her warm car that was safe from the main pile up and I was able to get him dressed. There were about 100 cars piled up on each side of the interstate in that area and we all ended up in the same small town. We had to spend the night at the Salvation Army on these horrible cots with at least 100 other people in one big room but at least we were safe.

I was an intern and I sent an entire Excel spreadsheet to the printer. Pages and pages of little blank cells printed forever and all those crabby, backstabbing gossipy old women made a point to make sure that everyone knew that the intern did it.
There should be some kind of control in place that prevents idiots from doing that....I mean you hit control P and you expect that the screen you're looking at will print. And yes I know that you can tell it what to print, but I pretty much just hit Print and then OK and that's what happened.

(I guess that doesn't sound so bad, but at the time I was mortified)

Worst Halloween

The Bookinator

One Halloween I dressed up as an orca whale in one of those inflatable suits you can get at Wal-mart as a sumo wrestler. I spray painted the thing black and white and I was so proud of it. Anyway, I was walking around the neighborhood, and mind you, it was very cold and windy (I lived in KS then) and suddenly I hear this loud hissing noise and I look down and saw that my suit had this gigantic hole in it. I must have brushed against a bush or something, but the hole was quite big and my suit was flat already. the problem was, I was over a mile from home in the middle of some suburbs I don't know (I was going with a friend). So I wandered around for an hour and finally found my mom and went home. It was awfully hot in the suit, but my legs and arms were really cold... it was quite miserable. But I sad because I couldn't wear my costume the next day at school for the Halloween party and parade around the school and do a costume contest which I was going to win... (it was an awesome costume). After school, my friends and I held a funeral for the costume (we're just weird like that) and we buried it in the backyard. So we took a bad memory and changed it into a good one. After a very sad (if not extremely short) eulogy, all of us drank punch and jumped into piles of leaves and swapped candy and all of that fun.

YOU ASKED FOR IT!
This story is called: How NOT to Get a Job

First some background/setup info..... (More than you EVER wanted to know about me!!!)

1) I suffer from IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) so I am always either enduring diarrhea or constipation. IBS is a condition that is exacerbated by stress.
2) I have a terrible time going to the bathroom (#1 OR #2) anywhere but in my own home...... Public bathrooms are the worst!!

O.K. Here we go.... I'm 17, fresh out of High School, and looking for my first job. One Monday, I get an interview with GTE (now the phone company Verizon) for a data entry position in the payroll department (The interview is scheduled for Thursday). Being nervous about the upcoming interview, my IBS kicks in ..... nothing exits my bowels for 4 days.

Day of the interview.
I'm hugely bloated, uncomfortable, and nervous. All dressed up and looking good in my new "interview suit" I show up and am asked to be seated & wait. During the half hour wait, my colon decides that THIS IS THE TIME!!! It starts with a little gas... I raise one cheek and silently release a few farts. Thank god....no smell. The receptionist didn't notice.....WHEW! The success of the first farts embolden me to proceed to relieve some more of the pressure that I feel; so I raise a cheek & silently release one looooooooooooong slow (silent!!) fart. Instantly I feel much better; but then an instant later, the odor hits. It's the gagging, eye-watering stench of rotting death; and it is HUGE - rapidly filling the room. When it wafts over to the receptionist she gives out a tortured little "ULP" and quickly excuses herself, disappearing out the door in a flash. I think to myself, "Why bother with the interview now? I should just leave."

It was this moment that the Human Resources Director opens the door to call me in to begin the interview. As he is opening the door I can see that his face is wrinkling up & he's blinking back tears. I wonder if he'll actually interview me or just escort me out of the building. To his credit, he proceeded with the hour long interview..... during which my abdomen began to make noises. LOUD, rumbling, growling noises. A couple of times he waited for the noises to subside before continuing to ask questions. I was mortified; I knew I'd NEVER get this job, so I was really casual during the rest of the interview, giving flip answers and not "selling" myself like I normally would have.

After the interview ends; I race to the nearest restroom...... occupied.....DAMN!..... there were empty stalls, but there's no way I can go with other people in the restroom. So I hop into the elevator and go down to the bottom parking level where there are very few cars and check out the restroom there........ empty!......Hallelujah!!!! I go in, sit myself down, and begin to "do my business". Since I hadn't done any business in 4 days there was quite a backlog (awful pun not intended). About half an hour later, I think I'm finishing up when I'm seized by an enormous cramp and from my backside comes a "bit of business" that is so astoundingly large that I dare not describe it here.
Thinking that I am alone, I exclaim "God! I think I just had a baby!!".
Then from 2 stalls over I hear a very horrified, "YOU DID WHAT?!??!!!".
I recognize that voice....... It's the Director of Human Resources!!
Now what do I do? Do I hide in my stall until he goes away? Do I explain the whole story? Do I wipe & run as fast as I can? That's the one... I'll go with plan C. I reply with a very embarrassed "ha ha...oh, nothing....." Wipe, Flush, Button Pants, Wash Hands, Flee!

The oddest part of this story...... I GOT THE JOB!!!!

Holy Carp Bib, now that's funny!! Mine certainly doesn't hold a candle to yours but here goes:

I was at a concert (Kid Rock) and as usual there was a line a mile long at the womens restroom, so me and a couple of other women at the back of this massive line decided to barge into the Men's restroom (there was three of us so we thought it would be ok). We walked in, got a stall and we all managed to do our business as we were walking out I heard someone call my name - it was a friend of mine from high school, so I stopped and caught up with this guy in the middle of the mens room until security came in and made all the women leave (by that time other women took our cure and charged the mens room as well).

Same topic, this is a good one.

I actually remember being potty trained. I was older, about 3 and a half years. I was the baby of the family and very stubborn and my mom didn't seem to be in any hurry for me to grow up but the summer I was 3, she had a terrible accident with a lawn mower. She cut off her big toe, half of the next toe and shaved off a good portion of the top of her foot and was in the hospital for 6 weeks. My grandmothers took turns helping my dad out wtih us 3 kids but when he had vacation, it was just him and us. We spent our vacation, as always, at our cabin...which had no indoor plumbing, only an outhouse. My dad decided it was time for me to be potty trained, he didn't have nearly the patience with my stubborness that my mom had so he took me out to the outhouse, sat me on one of those holes and physically held me down until I went. I struggled and squirmed and cried and tried with all my might to get out of his grip but he, being much bigger and stronger than me, won the day. I finally went to the bathroom, getting more on him than in the hole but I was potty trained from that day forward. And it set the tone for our relationship from then on, constant power struggles.

Aww, i wanted to join in for the potty story fun! Seriously, i had a good one! :p

Between the ages of 6 and 12 my grandfather had lived with us, and we were very close. He had taught me to play all kinds of poker over those 6 years, every saturday night we would play in the basement for hours and hours. With monopoly money, of course :p I even got really into it and made us both wear big sunglasses with rimmed hats, sometimes i chewed on a straw for the cigar effect. I loved everything. Rummy, 5 card, 7 card, blackjack...we had loads of fun. But one night my parents had invited over my dad's new boss, who happens to be a very traditional, conservative guy, and his wife for dinner. While they dine upstairs, my grandpa and I had our usual ball of a time in the basement, i think i was just 7 or 8 at the time. It turns out the toilet upstairs hadnt worked, so my mom directed the boss to the basement one. It was kinda dark, so he lost his way into my grandpa's basement office. The look on his face, staring at us with cards and "money" spread on the table, in our poker "faces" and me saying "Hit Me!", was PRICELESS. My dad said it was kinda awkward for a while after that, but we all got a great laugh!

 Now that there's so much demand for it I'm afraid it wont meet up to your expectations! Here it goes, though:

I used to babysit a lot for these family friends a few years ago, they had the cutest 4 year old girl.We went to a really large, fancy hotel because the mother needed to attend a 2 hour seminar and right after bring the girl somewhere. I was left to just play with and look after the girl for two hours, it was pretty fun until she said she needed to go to the bathrom. The person at the desk pointed us towards the restaurant bathrooms, the whole place was crowded with people having really formal, fancy dinners. I took her to the bathroom where she was having some troubles and feeling sick. I realized the dinner we had before coming had resulted in her having diarrhea, so, knowing her phone was off, left her mother a message saying so, which the girl overheard. When we came out she exclaimed really loudly and VERY proudly, to the whole restaurant " I HAD DIARRHEA!!!" Everyone just had a bit of a chuckle about it, although I was rather embaressed, I also laughed. But then, when we got out of the restuarant, we see her mother saying goodbye to some people by the elevators, and before I got a chance to stop her she ran to her mother and told her about her potty escapade, right in front of the colleagues too. Little kids are great that way :)

The best time I ever had on a plane was (oddly enough) flying to Florida from Alaska for my brother's funeral. Had to change planes in Detroit & when I did, I was seated next to my HERO, my IDOL, the man I wish I could be......Jimmy Buffett! Normally I would never talk to and/or bother a celebrity, but I know that he is a pilot himself so was bold enough to ask him why he was on a commercial flight & not in his own plane. He told me that he had just finished a tour and was flying back to pick up his plane.

He was very friendly and chatted with me for the entire flight. (his choice...I offered several times to leave him in peace.)

Worst Memory of Dating:

Was set up with a blind date by a close friend. (Close friend who apparently has NO IDEA what my tastes are!!) Talked with the guy on the phone a couple of times & he seemed o.k.; so we arranged a "get a cup of coffee & go see a movie" date. When the guy showed up at the coffee shop he was clearly drunk; and it was only 5pm. We chatted over coffee for a while, but I found it hard to understan him because he was so drunk that he was slurring his words.
He stumbled & fell no less than 3 times crossing the street to the movie theater.
About 15 minutes into the movie he leaned over and vomited into my bucket of popcorn!!! (It was quite suddenly HIS bucket of popcorn!!) He then proceeded to pass out and snore VERY LOUDLY throughout the rest of the movie.
As soon as the snoring started; I moved my seat to the other side of the theater and he was still passed out when the film ended & I left.

Rest assured that I gave the "matchmaker" a BIG piece of my mind when that date was over!!

Now let me hear someones BEST date story.

My best date story is when I went out on my first date. I was on raw nerves. This was my very first date and I really liked this guy, so was so worried something might go wrong. The guy I was going out with was so sweet and incredibly nervous becuase this was his first date too. We went to a coffee shop and got our hot drinks and as we were making our way back to a booth, he suddenly tripped, taking me down with him, and spilled hot coffee and tea all over. We were both soaked and incredibly embarrassed while the entire cafe just got really quite and looked at us. Then I started laughing at the irony of the occasion and apparently it was contagious enough to spread to him and the rest of the shop. Everyone in there seemed to be smiling or chuckling a little. After getting a few coupons from the manager, we then went outside (into the rain) and ran around in a nearby park. It was the most fun I had in a while and both of us enjoyed it. That's just one of those warm fuzzy memories that makes you feel all nostalgic and smile when remembering... :p

live and learn i suppose little wing :)

I think my best potty story is when my parents and i were roadtripping in New Zealand. We had just been to a fair giving out all these different types of apple cider. I drank and drank, and in the middle of NO WHERE my bladder screamed and cried to be relieved. We were expecting there to be no portopotty, let alone a bathroom. After 10 minutes of desperate searching of the roads, sheep on either side of us, we saw what looked like a run down, abandoned little rest stop. I was expecting very dirty conditions, i would have been elated at the possibility of there even being toilet paper or a working sink. I went in there and it was one of the cleanest, most beautiful bathrooms i have ever seen. Marble floors, spotless, the smells of recently applied disinfectant and a bowl of dried flowers mingled, and i then stepped outside to the middle of no where.
Next: Another positive potty story perhaps? They are a "relief" to some of the bad ones :p

"They even have a little place to put your purse"

I must admit that I shrieked like a little girl when I read that line.

Best Memory of going to the grocery store:

While shopping at my local Mom & Pop grocery store around this time last year, I noticed a man repeatedly staring at me through squinted eyes. Unfortunately this is not too uncommon.....homophobia runs rampant in my neck of the woods......so I was determined to ignore it to the best of my ability.
Standing in line waiting to pay for my items the squinty eyed starer got behind me in line. At this point he pipes up with "I know you caught me staring and I'm sorry; it's just that you look very familiar. I'm not from around here, just visiting on vacation; so I doubt that I really know you."
I asked him where he is from and he told me Maine. Told him that I grew up in Portland. His response was "TIMMY!!" and a huge bear-hug. The squinty-eyed starer was my childhood best friend...... we'd lost touch more than 25 years ago when my family moved to Alaska. I still can't believe that he recognized me.......I certainly never would have recognized him.

I went to the store to get toothpaste & toilet paper........instead I brought home a long lost friend......we've been in touch ever since.

Now, how about a nice story of the kindness of strangers.

that's funny!

I once saw a turd in one of those urinal things....why do people have to be so gross???

Anyway, my worst story of customer service...gee there have been so many. I once worked as a customer service representative in a call center and it was the most stressful job of my life. Basically, I was paid to answer complaint calls from dissatisfied customers of a home shopping network. The return policy was clearly stated on the packing slip and I was constantly having to tell people "no, you cannot return it --- it has been more than 30 days...) and then they would yell at me and tell me that the product was misrepresented...

Or, if they did happen to return the thing on time, they wanted to know when their money would be refunded. And I would tell them that the return was in process (because that is all that I could see when I accessed the account) but I couldn't give them a specific date as to when the charge would be credited on their card (and sometimes it would take 45 days or longer, which to me is just too long). In short my job title should have been s*** sponge instead of CSR because I got yelled at for things that were not my fault and that I had no control over.

I learned two things from that job: 1) Buyer Beware and 2) Don't be a compulsive shopper. And I wanted to tell these people that, but they were such idiots sometimes. One woman told me that she couldn't afford to buy her baby formula and diapers because she overspent with this particular home shopping place. And even if that were true, I had absolutely no authority or power to speed her credit transaction along.

What do you mean by kharma Shalot? I thought that referred to lessons you learn in this life that you can take to the next life

Well, I was thinking more along the lines of instant kharma. For example, someone is being a jerk and then right at that moment he/she trips on his/her shoelaces and falls face first into a plate of spaghetti.

Since I was unclear, I'll give my best memory of instant kharma (although for the person I am talking about, it was probably his most embarrassing moment...)

Back in college, I was in the library with Jay and some other friends, and he had been just a complete jerk ALL day to everyone, and he decides to sit on one of those rolling book carts that has the movable surface that continues to lower as you place more books on top of it.

Well, it was empty and not in use and he kind of hoisted himself up on it, thinking he could sit on it. Instead the top of it goes crashing to the bottom, and he's sitting in it with his legs splayed, sticking out of it and it was one of the funniest things I had ever seen. And it settled him down (at least for a while, anyway).

This may be an unpopular answer on this site; but here goes.

As a fat little openly gay kid with scars on my face in the 70's and 80's my school years were torturous for me. I never graduated...dropped out to work on my fater's lobster boat at 16. I did however live directly across the street from the elementary school that I had attended..... and one cold winter night (a couple of years after I moved up to middle school) I watched the place burn to the ground!!! (NO... I didn't set the fire... it was a faulty furnace)

It was re-built to become a state-of-the-art facility, and since it was nighttime nobody got hurt; so it turned out to be a not-so-bad thing. I cannot describe the satisfaction I felt that night watching the site of many of my worst memories going up in flames. It was just wonderful.... very liberating in an odd sort of way.

I'll ask the next obvious question so that I don't have to answer it......

Worst? Where to begin? :p

Most of my worst memories of school come from the dreaded Sports days/carnivals/special events that every school seems to so proudly hold annualy. As an uncoordinated hater of team sports these days serve as ones of humiliation and torture.
On a Sports Carnival in 6th grade I was particulary scarred with the memory of the first school's "Whole School Novelty Race." in which all the students had to run around the field while hopping on one leg, jumping between tires, etc. All the 6th graders finished in the beggining but I ended up towards the end of the 3rd graders row.

I have a tie for Worst Swimming stories..... can't decide between them; so I'll give you both.

When I was just a lad, my mother took me to the local pool one blistering hot day. I was learning (teaching myself) to dive off of a diving board and being the usual pest. ("Mom...Watch me ...Mom...Mom..look at this...Mom ...see what I can do...Mom!) When I thought I had her attention I took a running leap off of the board, but slipped at the very last moment. Hit my head (HARD) on the end of the board and just sort of plopped into the 13 feet of water below me, completely unconscious. The next thing that I remember is waking up in the ambulance on the way to the hospital. Apparently I was under the water for several minutes before a lifeguard noticed me & pulled me out....drained my lungs... and started CPR. Clearly, Mom was NOT watching.

FYI: The lung pain associated with drowning lasts for weeks...not like you see in the movies where people cough for a few minutes and are fine thereafter.

************************************************** ***********************

When I was 16 and had just started working on my Dad's lobster boat; I was pulling pots during a pretty nasty storm. A huge wave washed over the deck of the boat and I was swept overboard. I did have my safety tether on, but all that did was hold me next to the boat so that I was slammed repeatedly into the barnacle encrusted hull. To prevent myself from being knocked unconscious (yet again) I cut the tether so that I could swim freely. This was in Maine so the water was very cold, but not deadly cold....and we were within sight of shore. As the boat was drifting away from me I was thrown a life preserver told to hold on & they'd be back for me. After treading water for nearly an hour with the boat getting no closer I decided "screw this!" and swam in to shore. With the storm raging the crashing surf was ENORMOUS and the coastline is very rocky.... not a good combination... but I was able to get out of the water with nothing more than a broken collar bone. (plus all of the cuts & bruises from being bashed against the boat)

I've come to the realization that I have never escaped from anything in my life. That realization has led to a feeling of being trapped. Trapped in a job that I hate, in a community that hates me. Best Memory of a Restaurant

03-24-2007, 06:07 PM
When I was in Scotland for a brief two days, the educational tour group I was with booked us for dinner at this place that served haggis and played traditional Scottish songs while we ate. The meal/performance went on forever, it seemed like. I kept drinking the wine and I ate the haggis while a man with a bagpipe and a blonde-haired woman marched around the room singing and playing. When they were finished with one song, they would disappear into another room, and then make another entrance into the dining room in different costumes singing a different song.

I don't know how much wine I had, and I don't know how many songs they sang, but I was getting antsy and wanted to leave (and couldn't because I was with a tour group), but they just kept singing. And finally, when they left the room and then re-emerged singing yet another song, I burst into hysterical laughter and couldn't stop laughing, and I kept saying "they're still singing!"

Someone was kind enough to take me outside for air. And you're probably wondering why I said that was my best memory of a restaurant --- the reason why is because I had never before burst into hysterical laughter like that. I thought it was just something actors do on TV.

I am not feeling very creative so someone else share your best or worst memory of a restaurant.

O.K. Drama..... with that one simple concept, escape, you've led me to an existential crisis. Have been searching for days now to come up with a memory that could possibly apply. I've come to the realization that I have never escaped from anything in my life. That realization has led to a feeling of being trapped. Trapped in a job that I hate, in a community that hates me. I suddenly feel the crushing weight of my responsibilites, both financial and practical, to my home, my boat, my crew, my business and my family.

I am very sorry Biblio. In a way we are all trapped by the limitations of existence and our ever haunting past.

Sounds like quite the adventure Shalot! You know what they say, laughing makes you live longer :)

My best memory of a restaurant is on my family vacation to Italy around 4 years back. We were in the most beautiful place in the world (or at least in the top 10 :p), Venice, and had spent the day touring glass sculpture galleries. My parents had saved up money to buy one really beautiful piece of glass art on this trip, and ended up purchasing a beautiful abstract sculpture that cost a decent penny. The gallery owner was so pleased with our purchase that he directed our taxi boat to a very fancy, very beautiful restaurant overlooking the water. There were about 6 courses to the meal, ending with limencello that was served to me as well, even though I was only 10 at the time. It was my first "fancy" meal and it was in an incredibly magical place, so it was very memorable.

What like blackouts from drinking or electrical blackouts?:p

I'll go with electrical since I've never experienced the drinking kind.

A few years ago a pretty significant part of the midwest experienced a blackout - all power gone. It happened about 4 in the afternoon and lasted well into the next day. It wasn't a bad experience and parts of it were kinda fun (drinking at work because there was nothing else to do - hanging out with neighbors). The worst part was when it first happened nobody really knew what was going on and it was very hard to get through on the cell phones so most people experienced a few tense moments when they couldn't contact family memebers/friends to make sure everybody was ok.

My best memory of a sporting event would have to be during a School Sports Day when I actually didnt humiliate myself. I had been doing serious running for the past few months and was in really good shape but because of past experience didnt have the confidence that i would do any beter at the event then years of my past. It actually turned out reasonably well and during the long race where stamina counted a lot, i came in 3rd out of the 50 girls in my year.

Best Friend, Semi-Friend, and I went to the opening day of the baseball season. We told Semi-Friend that she needed to eat breakfast because we start drinking early. We get to the stadium or should I say the bars around the stadium and begin the festivities. Turns out Semi-Friend did not eat breakfast and after several hours of drinking wasn't feeling that well. By this time we were in the stadium, all three of us in a stall in the restroom in the stadium to be precise. We decided the only way to make Semi feel better was that she should make herself vomit. She couldn't do it so she let best friend stick her finger down semi's thoat to try and expel the evil. Really quite gross.

The last time I was on an aircraft I was coming back from Edmonton where I was visiting my signifigant other, so I wasn't particularly thrilled to be on it in the first place. I was delayed in Calgary (my only stop), so I went to the airport Chilli's for a pint of my third choice beer (my first two choices were gone) and what is quite possibly the worst veggie-burger I've ever had (this was, I believe, the only item on the menu which did not contain animals). After reading it, I was extremely full, and not feeling particularly good. The flight, as you have probably gathered, was extremely turbulent. So turbulent, in fact, that I couldn't read my book to take my mind off maters. As the grand finale, the pilot decided to take his extremely tiny two-prop puddle-jumper about a dozen feet off the runway before pulling up as hard as possible and making a compex, nausea-inducing turn around so he could take another shot at landing. Ugh.

Best Memory of a Boss. This is a recent boss, I only knew him for a short time before he retired but he was excellent. He respected people's opinions. I (and anyone else) could say whatever we wanted to him - and I mean anything. He made people feel like they were contributing and asked their opinions. And the best part was that he liked his drink, often everybody met at the corner bar after work and he was a gossip so one could get all the info out of him. And he had a great name so I could say "I work for ****" and it could take on several different meanings..

It breaks my heart to see this thread (my absolute favorite) unused for so long.
The following is not MY memory.....read on & you'll see why.

Spent a week camping in the back country of Yellowstone National Park a few years ago, and had the best time of my life. I could easily "drop-out" of my life and become a hermit living in Yellowstone; so I have no "Worst" memory.

However, on our last night there I was exhausted and went to sleep early, leaving Bob to do the work of preparing for bed (putting out the fire, suspending all food products high above the ground, etc.).
I awoke at the crack of dawn to find poor Bob sitting bolt upright in our sleeping bag, pale as a ghost, and looking dreadfully tired. When I asked what was wrong, he told me that our campsite had been visited in the middle of the night by a pack of wolves AND a bear.

"No way!" says I....
"WAY!!" says he "and I am NOT going out there until after you prove its safe"
So I peeked out of the tent flap and looked around. No wildlife, but LOTS of tracks and spoor.
"Why didn't you wake me?"
"I TRIED!! I would have had to shout at you and I didn't want to startle the wildlife."
"You should have pinched me"
"Look at your arm....."
Sure enough I had half a dozen bruises where he had been pinching me repeatedly. (one was still bleeding)

I grabbed my camera and started taking pictures of the tracks surrounding the tent, jabbering to Bob the whole while. "OOOH look at this one... it's perfect.... wish we had some plaster we could make casts of these prints.....Looks like a wolf scent marked (peed on) our tent...." After several minutes I realized that Bob was not answering me; so I looked in the tent and he was sound asleep. He slept till NOON that day. Never before or since have I seen him sleep that late. Poor guy had a rough night; and I slept right through it.... pinching and all.

I wish you could hear him tell this story...It's VERY dramatic when he does. The terror coursing through him at the sound of a snorting bear on the other side of the tent fabric and the howling of the wolves. His visions of being torn limb from limb while his partner slept like a baby beside him.
Ask him about the worst night of his life & this is the story he'll tell.

This is one of my favorites as well.

I can't think of one best memory of a holiday but one that stands out would be the year my mom had Christmas Breakfast at her house. I told everyone they had to come in their Pajamas, which everybody did. Oh wait or the year my Uncle knocked over the christmas tree. Oh wait this last Thanksgiving, I was home and my cousin asked me to go with him to the parade (Downtown Detroit) I told him i'd go but that was before I knew I was making the turkey. I got up extra early to clean and dress the bird. I got it all ready and put it in the garage (Mom loved that) (It was cold enough and there wasn't any room in the fridge - I covered it) then I left directions for my Mom for when and why and what temp. Several times though out the morning I would get calls from my Mom. It turned out pretty good.

Worst Memory of car shopping

05-13-2007, 12:12 AM
My worst memory of car shopping wasn't actually the shopping itself....it was the reasons for it and the feelings that went with it. I remember being really depressed because about a month before we had bought a brand new beautiful car that some guy crashed into- breaking my brothers legs and permanently damaged my mothers foot. So it wasn't exactly a joyous occasion to buy that car that ended up being a used blue Honda. That's my worst memory of car shopping.......

Best memory of a competition.....

BibliophileTRJ
05-16-2007, 09:48 AM
As a VERY NON-competitive person I didn't expect to be able to chime in on this topic, but there is one ongoing competition between my siblings and I that I'm pretty proud of.

Mom was a very devoutly religious woman (Roman Catholic) and instilled in all of her children a sense of charity and duty to community. Religion didn't take in most of her kids (only one of six is still a Catholic) but the belief that it is important to give back to community/society stuck in all of us. We all have our pet charities....I give time & money to HIV/AIDS orgs, one of my sisters supports cancer research, another supports adoption services, the other supports the Special Olympics, my surviving brother is very active setting up after-school programs for inner-city kids.

As you can imagine we all turn to one another when it comes time for fund-raising..... this is where the competition comes in. Whenever we get a request for a donation the oneupsmanship begins. If I give $100 the next sibling that gets the request will outdo me by giving $110, the next sib gives $125 and so on. A very clear pattern has emerged over the years that one can take advantage of to maximize donations.... ask the richest sibling first! if they set the bar high then you'll be raking in the dough (for your charity) by the time you get through my fairly large family.

I doubt that this is the kind of competition that was being asked about; but it's the best I can do. I have no need to prove that I can get a ball in a hole, hoop, or between posts; I can't run or swim faster than anyone..... the whole "I'm better than you" aspect of competition just really turns me off..... I'm not better than anyone.....I'm just me with my strengths & weaknesses like you're just you with yours..... no better, no worse.

Okay, it was a while ago, I was with a family in Wisconsin, I take care of their kids, and I decided to take their 7 year old girl "exploring".. Bad Idea!
There was a main road and I figured we would look around and I would keep my eye on the main highway.. Well, after about 15 minutes of looking around the woods I figured that it was about time to turn and go back. I had thought the road was right around this big tree , when we got up the hill to where I was sure it was it turned out that it was not. I looked around not really worried, that is until everywhere I thought the road was it was not and Megan(7) began to get really scared. I did not want her to freak out so I had to keep my cool, but inside I was freaking out!
Finally we came to a house, but there was barbed wire all around it.. I felt like I was in Texas Chainsaw Massacare and put her on my back and ran.. After about 10 minutes of running I came to another road with a huge row of houses. I knew that it would lead to the highway, so by the time we got to the highway we were about a mile from the house.
But we got there after about an hour and a half or so.
Worst memory because I was only responsible for my welfare, but a seven year old girls as well.. .after that I took a very long nap and decided neevr to go "exploring" in the woods there again.

This one is SO EASY!! Christmas Dinner 1997

During the course of the meal ALL of the following things happened (in this order)

1) The cats knocked over the Christmas tree in the living room
2) There was a small grease fire in the kitchen
3) My brother-in-law told my sister that he's been having an affair with her best friend for over a year, that she (the mistress) is pregnant with his child, and that he is divorcing her (my sister)
4) My drunken brother vomited onto the platter full of ham
5) A car hit the pole down the street and we lost power for the next 10 hours

I often feel that I should write that evening down as a one-act play.... if done right it could be hilarious and horrifying at the same time.

Same Topic..... (I want to see if anyone can even come close to such a disastrous evening.)

hey Bib that's quite a story you got there. I can't come close to that humdinger!

The only thing that currently comes to mind was the time at my great aunts funeral. My grandpa's zipper was stuck on his jacket so he took it off over his head. My grandma and I sat there trying to get the zipper unstuck. When we did I took the jacket over to Gramps and started to say "We got the zipper.." When all of the sudden my other great Aunt yelled "Your grandfather and I are talking" really loud right infron of the casket. Well, Grandma heard that and started yelling from the back of the room that Aunt had better never talk to me like that again. And the arguing was on..

I think I was around 8 or 9 at the time. Aunt never really spoke to me after that. Actually years later I was walking down the street with a friend and Aunt was walking towards us. I told my friend that was my aunt. She didn't believe me because as we passed each other Aunt didn't acknowledge me and I didn't acknowledge her. My friend calls to my Aunt and asked if she was in fact my aunt to which aunt affirmed and turned around and kept walking.

I would have to say that my worst cooking disaster was when I was first trying to be a single dad, and making spaghetti. I figured, spaghetti and jar sauce couldn't go wrong for my young boy. Trouble was, the large pot I used, unbeknownst to me, was the one my wife had used with our daughter to dye her hair blue! O.K. Since Scheherazade seems unwilling to fill us in on her New Year's Eve story I'll proceed with "The worst cooking disaster".

Let me first state that EVERY time I try to cook it winds up being a disaster.

Got home around 5pm and was really hungry, so decided to whip something up. I was not setting my sights very high.... just some spaghetti and sauce from a jar. Put the water on to boil in a large glass (pyrex) pot and started warming my sauce in a pan on the other burner. Was chatting with a friend on a cordless phone (held only with an ear and a shoulder) when it slipped & fell directly into the boiling water. Time to go buy a new phone. Put on ANTOTER pot of water to boil, but apparently when the phone hit the pot on the first go-round it cracked it & I failed to notice. When this pot of water began to boil I noticed a strange ticking noise.... then all of a sudden the pot just disintegrated!! Boiling water all over my stove, my legs, my floor, and my dog that was begging at my feet. The water caused a short in the electric stove so now I have a sparking stove that electrocutes me when I try to grab the saucepan and is actively electrocuting the dog who is standing in a puddle of boiling water. Fortunately it eventually tripped the circuit-breaker and the house went dark.

Off to the hospital to get treatment for the 2nd degree burns on my lower legs. Then to the vet to visit my poor little dog who was being treated for 2nd degree burns covering most of her back. She had a BIG bald spot on her back for the rest of her life, but the electrocution seemed to have no lasting effects (other than making me feel incredibly guilty so that I spoiled her rotten until the day she died).

Got home around midnight and never did manage to have a meal that day.

Worst Public Speaking Memory

6th grade Science class. I'm 11 years old and (historically speaking) not too fond of school; except for this class. This particular teacher was great...she was very engaging and made learning fun. I had to give an oral report on "The Human Lungs"; I was excited..... I'd done all my research, prepared visual aids, wrote a great report, practiced and practiced and practiced it until my siblings were ready to kill me. I was READY!!

Report day came and I woke up feeling terrible....just miserably sick.

Tim: "Mom, I can't go to school today, I'm sick"
Mom: "You're NOT sick. You just don't want to do your oral report"
Tim: "I DO want to do my report! I don't feel good!"
Mom: "Tough! You're going to school, Mister."

I get to school and tell the teacher I want to go see the nurse, I feel sick.

Teacher: "You're not sick... you're just nervous about giving your report."
Tim: "No, I WANT to give my report; but I don't feel good"
Teacher: " Why don't you give your report first; then when everybody else is giving their reports you can go to the nurse."
Tim: "Fine."

Young Tim goes to the front of the class, sets up his visual aids, and turns to face his audience.

Tim: "My report is on the Human LUUUUUUUUUUUUUrgh!!!!"
At that point I vomited. All over my visual aids. All over myself. All over my teacher. Teacher, being vomited on; begins to return the favor.... SHE vomits. All over me. All over my posters and diagrams. Watching the puke-fest at the front of the class, several other students decide to join in the fun.
Needless to say, I got to go see the nurse at that point (but not until AFTER I slipped in the regurgitated mess, landed on my butt in the puddle, and was covered in it front AND back). I had a fever of 102.5, and was very ill for the next several days.

NOBODY EVER told me "Gee.... I should have listened to you when you told me you didn't feel well....I could have spared you this life-long emotional scar.... I'm sorry."

That is the moment in time when I was saddled with the nickname "Little Timmy Puke-ins" (rhymes very well with my true last name). I didn't live that nickname down until after I quit school some 5 years later.

In order to do that they had to take the inside of my driver's side door apart. When I got the car back the window worked fine but when I tried to shut the door from inside the car, the whole handle and door panel would come off in my hand.

Best or Worst Memory of a School Dance

Worst memory of a school dance,i have one of those
2 years ago in what is considered "year 8" here our school had a dance on a river cruise boat, going to the other side of the river and back with a DJ and pizza in a good 3 hour trip.
It started out wonderfully, my friends and I were doing really well dancing, getting better and more into it as time went on. A time came for the biggest group dance competition of the night, we were spinning and all over the dance floor and looked amazing. We ended up winning an entire pizza for ourselves(there was only 4 of us and it was a big treat).
We decided to wait till the end of the night to eat it because my friends wanted to dance some more, but everyone was ecstatic. It was my job, as I couldnt eat the pizza and therefore would not steal it, to hold on to it. It was very dull holding a pizza in a chair with music so loud and all these dancers bumping into you, so i decided to go out on the boat to enjoy the view. It was a beautiful night, the view was amazing and I was getting very sleepy and relaxed out there, I even leaned over the edge to get a beautiful burst of wind in my hair....and then dropped the pizza right into the murky depths. My friends werent too happy and held that against me for a while.

That would have to be a few days before Christmas when i was 7. My parents, grandparents and I travelled to New York for a few days and my grandparents took me out to a really giant toy store. They had, what seemed like to a 7 year old, every toy imaginable. I spent several hours just exploring the place, until i came to a giant shelve of your good old fashioned teddy bears. These fluffy bears were in various colors, rows and rows of orange, blue, purple and pink. My grandparents told me I could pick my own present for Christmas(i figured out the santa claus nonexistance at 5), so I ended up going home with a pink teddy named Pinky. Since that day pinky has gone with me on all my travels and remains cherished, with a special spot on my pillow. I really love him because he is my reminder of my grandparents.

My worst memory about books comes from the scholastic book fair held at our school when I was in the third grade. I was the type of person who didn't judge a book by it's cover. I would actually turn to the back cover and read the little story synopsis, summary, whatever you want to call it, to see what it was about. So I found a book about a girl who was losing her sight. So I bought it and proceeded to read it. However, the cover of the book made it look worse than it actually was --- it looked some kind of teen romance loser story.

So there I am reading it with little regard for who can see me and this boy from the 6th grade came up to me when I was reading it after school waiting for the stupid school bus (I was on the late bus and so was he) and he says loudly "I CAN"T BELIEVE YOU'RE READING THAT!"

And I felt kind of small, because there was an older guy making fun of me. (I got that a lot actually. Girls and guys. I will never forget the girl named Teal. What a name --- Teal. She had a fat butt and ugly too white skin. I hope she rots in hell).

My one friend that had a licsense came and got me and my mom made her promise she would give me a ride home (a little foreshadowing?). Friend promises. Off we go to the party. A few hours in friend comes up to me and says I have to leave I can't drive you home and walks away. There I was stuck at this house without a ride home, slightly tipsey so calling mom was out of the question.

I had never met him before, so I was very excited to finally be able to see him; I had heard lots stories about him. So Christmas Day arrives and I'm really sick with a flu or something. I was afraid I would have to stay home and not see him, but Mom let me come later in the day. When I got there, I wasn't feeling so good, I could barely talk and I was really tired. I was sad because I didn't get to talk to him or anything, then I fell asleep on the couch. When I woke up he was holding me in his arms. I don't know how long he had been holding me, but after I woke up, he continued to hold me and tell me stories. So I got to meet him after all.

Worst memory of an airport was in Philadelphia. I was there for five hours and there was something wrong with the pressure on the plane I had been on before and it was torture on my ears.

So there I was in that airport for five hours, starving, I could barely hear and I had a book called Summer Sisters by Judy Blume to read. You're probably wondering why I didn't go buy something to eat and I don't know. I do remember that it was very crowded and I think I may have eaten some pretzels or something but it was just bad. When I first got my drivers license I purchased my grandmother's 1972 Oldsmobile Delta 88... A HUGE car that was only one year younger than me. There was a drive-in theater about an hour away from where I lived. This theater would charge a flat rate for a car no matter how many people were in it. I once stuffed 16 (that's right sixTEEN) friends into that car and went to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I still laugh out loud thinking of that night.... many of my friends (straights) were dressed in drag as is/was the custom when seeing that film.... yelling and throwing things at the screen (again customary with that particular film). Was just GREAT FUN.

On the way home I got pulled over by a cop.... he couldn't believe the number of people in the car..... made us all get out.... then get back in again after counting us. I didn't get a ticket, because he said that I was driving well; but that in a car stuffed with teenagers stacked like cord-wood he had anticipated drinking and since everyone was sober we were free to go.

Worst memory of a car? Where should I begin? Let me start off by saying that any gold and/or champagne colored car has always been bad luck for me.

Let's start with the Duster, painted gold. This is the car my good old dad brought home for my mother. It was a POS from the word go, and even at 5 years old I knew to hang my head in shame when I was dropped off at kindergarton in it. It made loud noises when it went and the ride was jerky. Then one day my mother tried to take us to the pool in it but we never made it. Smoke poured from under the hood and she yelled at me to get the diaper bag which was still in the back seat while she tried to get my younger brother out of it. When the smoke stopped pouring out of it, the hood of the car had lovely burn marks on it.

Then there was the gold Plymouth Acclaim. Whenever I drove it up a hill it emitted the smell of rotten eggs. Then one day, my future husband and I were cruising down the road in it laughing about the foul egg smell, and it just stopped going. He pulled off the first chance he got, which happened to be in the shared parking lot of a store that sold car parts called the Hot Rod Barn or something like that, and an adult video store. I popped the hood and there were flames in the engine and battery to which he said "That's fire."
The car proceeded to burn and the owner of the adult video store wanted it out of his parking lot because a burned car might not look so good and be bad for business

And then there was the gold Elantra. It was okay as far as cars go. It began to make strange sounds as more and more miles accumulated on it, but it was reliable. One day my husband called me while driving and he had a car accident. That was the worst sound I ever heard. It wasn't his fault - the other driver was on the phone also, which is why he ran the stop sign and slammed into the gold Elantra. Luckily no one was hurt, and the Elantra was totaled. Moral of this story: Do not drive while talking on the phone!!!

I will never drive a gold car again!

She called me up and asked me if I wanted to hang out with her and him and some other people. She gives me the name of a hotel and I go to hang out. And we did for a while, but one by one people started to leave and I found myself alone with "dude." He told me I was looking really good.

Then he says, "Hold on a second"

I dreamt that I got out of the car at work and was walking toward the building when I realized I wasn't wearing pants. And in the dream I told myself to just go with it and thought maybe they wouldn't notice if i stayed in my cubicle all day

Worst dream you ever had?

I had this dream in college. My dad and I have had our struggles and college was kind of the peak of the crisis. I had this dream that there were two of me, me at my current age which I suppose was about 19 or 20 and then a 5 year old me. My family was standing around this huge pit discussing that there can't be two of me, one of them will have to die. Now the real me was the 20 year old me but no matter how many times I told my family that, they wouldn't be convinced, they just kept discussing the pros and cons of killing this one or that. Finally, my dad said, we should let the younger one live, that way she'll have her life to live over again and she'll have the opportunities make better decisions and make more of her life so it was decided. I was in a panic because that meant I would be buried alive in this pit. I woke up with me in the pit, dirt being shoveled on top of me and screaming. Do you think I was going through some inner turmoil there?

This is an interesting question so I'll pass it on...

Yeah I would think so. You were fighting with the self you wished you could be and the self you were. As a five year old you could live your life again... Best memory of soap:

To start out, I have to give a little background information. I come from a large family. The family would take vacations together. I am talking all the aunts and uncles and grandparents and cousins would go to the beach together. Sometimes we'd get a couple of huge condos or rent several rooms at a hotel. One year, we rented houses. My cousin and I were bunked together in the downstairs area of one of the houses and there was a shower/tub for us to use.

Everything was going along fine until the hair appeared. It was a short and curly black hair on the white dial soap. I discovered it upon returning from the beach. I decided to try my parent's bathroom instead. In fact, I just stopped using that shower altogether.

My cousin found it and asked me if I had seen what was in the shower and of course we had a good laugh about that, being about 9 or 10 (and we knew it wasn't ours). you know how silly little girls can be.

And when it was time for us to pack up and leave, her mom told us to get everything out of the shower and we made a big deal about the pube on the soap and how we weren't going to touch it. And her mom thought we were big fools.

Worst Memory of Shoes

Shalot
10-07-2007, 08:42 PM
I had a pair of good-looking shoes that I got on sale. They were uncomfortable as hell, but they looked really good on my foot. I got some funk on the inner soles and I decided to clean the funk off. the cleaner I used kind of melted the surface of the insole and created a sticky goo that never dried completely. I put the shoes on and the sticky goo adhered to my foot. I gave the shoes a couple of days to dry out, but it didn't help. There was a definite chemical reaction between the cleaner and the insole that made the insole permanent goo and made the shoe unwearable.

I put the shoes in the trash and thought I was done with the shoes. At the time I lived with my husbands family and his aunt saw my shoes in the trash and took them out. she asked me if I meant to throw them away and wondered if she could have them instead. I didn't tell her that they were uncomfortable and that the insoles were the equivalent of bubble gum - I just let her go for it.

I never saw the shoes again. I am guessing she put them on and decided that I wasn't a wasteful ingrate afterall.

Oh, I could never actually tell anyone, in fact, all those in attendence have been sworn to secrecy. It is only referred to, when absolute necessity demands it, as "The Berthold Incident", named for the town in which it happened. All I can say is that it was fueled by large quantities of various types of alcohol, beer, wine and spirits along the freedom that comes from hanging out in a town where you don't know anyone.

Same question, maybe this time someone will actually have the guts to spill. :p

aww see - Britney Spears is not the only one.

My best memory of the news (I kind of took this in a different direction than what was intended I think): I was going to write for the newspaper in college so I went to the first meeting and I was told to come back in a week. It was the summer semester and I had a beach trip planned. Me and LostCoast had saved up and made our reservations so there was no way I was going to that meeting. And I was told that if i didn't come to that meeting then I could forget about writing for the paper. I chose the beach and i don't regret it all. Here's why: the pay usually sucks and I am not talented or smart enough to write for anything other than a hometown rag, and I realized what my priorities were on that day. Life is too short so I went to the beach.

I may have the opportunity to write for a paper one day. If I a make enough money, I can buy myself a column. It happens here all the time.

Best memory of a concert is the OCMS show I saw in October 2006. I had just been introduced to the band, and was just getting into their songs. The show was sold out, and everyone was singing and dancing along, and I could participate since it didn't really require much coordination to clap and stop your foot. And it was kind of neat to see young people getting into to this music that was old timey in style.

Best Memory of a Traffic Jam

A bunch of my friends and I were on the way home from a camping trip. We were in two cars; I was in the back one. We got into some stop and go traffic. so, one time when we were stopped, another girl and I hopped out and did a Chinese fire drill. We ran around both the car we were in and the car in front of us. By the time we got back to our car (it was a mini van) traffic was moving a bit so we got to jump in as the van was rolling. After that our friends in the car in front started doing a puppet show out of the sun roof. Then we started throwing pretzels between the two cars. We had to do something to relieve the boredom. ;) It was a blast.

sooooo many good memories of bike rides. A Thai restaurant my family went out to. I'm not a big Thai food fan, 'cause of the coconut milk, which I don't care for, but this was different. We were all served our soup, and I was the first to sample it. Literally as the spoon touched my tongue, my face contorted and I almost spewed. I have no idea what was in it--and it wasn't spoiled--but it was the worst thing I've ever tasted. Then a few of my family members tried theirs and had the same reaction. Embarrassed, we asked the manager for the check and left.

That's easy. When I was a kid, my family went camping in Wisconsin. That night, a wicked thunderstorm blew through and ripped the tent right out of the ground. We had to sleep in the car. Then, on a non-weather note, we all came down with swimmer's itch. I have never been camping since.

The one that comes to mind is the most recent. I was in mongolia and we got caught in a dust storm. At first it was a little annoying but then the wind picked up and it was like being sandblasted, we had to walk about a quarter mile back to the bus. By the time I got back to the bus I was filthy, I even had dirt on my teeth. Then, the next day we were scheduled to visit an extinct volcano. It was a little cloudy and overcast but nobody paid it any mind. About 3/4 from the top it started raining, about 5 minutes after I got to the top it started hailing, thundering, and lightning. We all had to scramble back down the wet, slippery volcano. I only slipped and fell once.

Second grade. My teacher knew that I was reading at high school level. She helped me with a lovely hardcover set of the Oz books. I would borrow one per night and read them. She also didn't make me reread everything a dozen times because other people couldn't read as fast or as well as I could. I went through a lot of teachers who simply refused to believe I could read and remember so fast. One got a shock. She kept telling me she was going to give me the quiz today instead of tomorrow if I could really read that fast. I agreed and aced it! No more problems from her!

that's a toughie, there have been so many books that by the time you finish them, you say, "that was a great book!" and that goes for a fair handful of contemporary best seller types too. I sometimes wonder if david Baldacci, lee child, vince Flynn and Jeffery deaver had written their books over a hundred years ago, how their material would be considered.

I think too id have to interpret "best" as "favorite" as the former implies I have some insider knowledge as to literary qualifications, while the latter is easy---which one have I liked the most.

im going to go with tom brown's schooldays by Thomas hughes (except the first chapter, which is awful!)

One friend kept hopping back and forth over this open hole in the floor of one of the houses as she was telling her ghost story, everybody was so distracted by what she was doing that nobody was listening. My best memory of 6th grade is sort of a mixture of emotions. I was told my parents would no longer be able to afford the catholic school I had gone to since Pre-K, but would promptly be put into a public school in a bad area. My best memory is when the small group of friends I had surrounded me and hugged me so tight. I have never felt so loved in my entire life. After a stint of studying Eastern comparative theology, I accidentally meditated and slipped off into the "awakened" state - it goes by many names and many forms - and spent ten days with a very altered perspective indeed. The greatest moments of it felt as if I controlled everything and nothing. I recall most vividly standing out, almost in the bay, and feeling that I was as responsible for pushing the clouds along the sky and causing the waves to roll as I was for the movement of my own limbs. It's quite an aesthetic experience indeed.

early college age shenanigans...a friend of mine was driving too slow and then not letting the car behind pass. they were getting pretty angry. we pulled over and got out---I don't remember if it was because of them, or because we had gotten to where we were going and had forgotten about them (I lean towards that one)---and they pulled over, got out too, and physically attacked us. they were pretty mad and rightly so.

things calmed down after an initial skirmish, and then started up again after the biggest fellow on the other side started doing all sorts of karate/kung fu poses like what you'd see on tv!
