Yes that is what I was talking about :) I just love that film. I also saw an adaptation of Midsummer Night's Dream and it was great as well.

I don't think I've heard it described in that way before, very interesting...and welcome to the thread! I like the Goonies too, not that I've actually seen it all the way through, but it's from the '80s and it's about kids and buried treasure; I ask for nothing more.

I've heard Withnail and I is funny, but I doubt I could find it anywhere around here. Which reminds me, I'm in Kansas City but I can not for the life of me find Robert Altman's Kansas City anywhere, has anyone seen it and was it good? (sorry, not to get off topic...keep posting those lists, they're very interesting)

You know Kieślowski? Wow, I'm surprised. :brow: Do you know his trilogy Three Colours? It was great as well. There's also another Polish director you probably know - Roman Polański. I don't really enjoy his films, though.

dodgy: 1. Evasive; shifty.

Yes. He's of course well-known in Poland together with Wojciech Kilar. He wrote music to the whole Decalogue (my favourite one - Dec. 5) and Three Colours and also to a pretty famous film Europa, Europa by Agnieszka Holland.

Top ten list are hard to do. My favorite movies changes depending on my mood. And just ten? It´s really hard! So with much thought, and not without some pain at not writing Lynch or Trier or Tarantino:
1, Orlando ( ohhh Tilda Swinton)
2, Casablanca
3, Citizen Kane
4, The Hours
5, My neighbour Tottoro (animated movie)
6, 2001
7, Apocalypse now
8, Dr Strangelove or the day I stopped worrying and learned to love the bomb.
9, Todo sobre mi madre (All about my mother) Pedro Almodóvar
10, and a movie that I forgot the title of. It is a documentary by a swedish journalist. She portrays a prostitute in latin america and her fight for other women of her trade- trying to arrange a union, and protection so that they cannot as easily be beaten to death, as well as arranging childcare and schooling for the younger ones. Despite the theme, the movie is beautiful. The film is not only a documentary but also a work of art. If I just could remember the title ... Has anyone seen this movie? Help?

Titanic isn't as bad as it is overrated. When a Celine Dion song comes on every 20 minutes on the radio and when a film gets 11 Oscars (none of which were for acting, which makes an interesting statement...:p) including BEST PICTURE, despite the presence of other films such as As Good As It Gets, then you know it's gone too far.

I agree it's a great film and I almost put it on my list. I also considered "A Streetcar Named Desire," but in the end I had to go with "Last Tango in Paris" as Marlon Brando's most unforgettable performance. He must have enjoyed that role better than any other and it came through in the acting.

There is something about James Brooks' films that irritates me. I have never understood exactly what it is. His movies display a high quality in most respects, he seems to elicit good performances from the actors, the stories are plausible and interesting, but by the end of the film I somehow end up feeling irritated. It's like an unconscious reaction to something I can't identify.

M'Lord,
the way you put it is funny in itself. I went twice to the movie to see Liar Liar and the first time for some reason the crowd was not exactly taken with either the movie or Jim Carey. At the part where his pen tries to tell the truth and he tries to stop it with his other hand and all Corinna and I were shrieking with laughter. Suddenly an entire row of people turned and glared us with contempt then turned around. We were suitably subdued. The second time I went the audience was laughing louder than I have ever heard before. It made things seem even funnier.

Hehe, I can still do the traffic scene from memory...

"Do you know why I pulled you over?"
"Depends how long you were following me!"
"...let's just start from the top."
"Okaaay, here goes...I sped, I followed too closely, I ran a stop sign, I almost hit a Chevy, I sped some more, I failed to yield at a crosswalk, I changed lanes while driving through the intersection, I changed lanes without signaling while running a red light and SPEEEEDING!!"
"...that all?"
"NO."
"..."
"I have unpaid parking tickets!"

Favourite Movies

1. Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress
2. William Shakespeare's Hamlet (Kenneth Branagh)
3. Much Ado about Nothing (also Kenneth Branagh)
4. Twelfth Night (Trevor Nunn)
5. Pride and Prejudice (BBC mini-series)
6. Sense and Sensibility
7. Doctor Zhivago (with Omar Sharif & Julie Christie)
8. The Parent Trap (Hayley Mills)
9. The Pink Panther - A Shot in the Dark
10. The Pink Panther Strikes Again

-- Wow, that was hard...I don't really watch movies that much, when I watch TV it's more (filmed) operas and concerts and documentaries. The last few are just comedies that get a good laugh out of you, but they're not so much my favourites as the first 7 are.

hahha I think I will go and rent it on dvd immediately. Somehow thinking about Robinhood sitting in his lincoln green guffawing over Liar Liar is just the best

Miss Darcy,
I love all the films you mentioned. I cannot believe you also love pink panther. So does Weeping Willow. Did you see the one where Allan Arkin played Clouseau when Peter Sellers was fighting with the studio for more money? I didn't want to watch it at first and t hen it became my favorite. His timing and way of speaking are perfect.
In our family we all just start speaking a line or two from a movie and whoever knows what it is about continues, it is so funny , yes yes I know that I know that.
I think it is strange that in real life Cato and chief inspector Dreyfus thought Peter Sellers quite a loser and quite mad. Life is funny sometimes.

Monica,
please forgive my mistake. I was meaning did you see The WRong Guy, that it is the same kind of hysterically funny, and I do mean hysterically funny movie as the Jim Carey movies. Actually it stars Dave Foley of News radio. We had company over last month and the guy is usually very quiet and reserved. He was screaming with laughter and I heard they bought the dvd just the other day. I hope you get a chance to see it.
And I love the name Monica. My childhood girlfriend Marika used to take me to her German Lutheran youth group and so I rather grew up with a large group of German children. Erica and her sister Monica were wildly popular and pretty. I have always liked that name.

Oh, stupid me :D I thought it was Jim Carrey in that film.
It's nice to hear that somebody likes my name. I don't. It's funny for me to hear English-speaking people pronounce it because they stress it in a different way. In my language it should be moNIka and they pronounce it MOnika. I tried to teach my English teacher to pronounce it correcttly but after 4 years of training he invariably says: MOnika

Favourite Movies

2. William Shakespeare's Hamlet (Kenneth Branagh)

I liked the BBC Hamlet with Derek Jacobi better than the Branagh. Somehow, setting Hamlet in Russia was awkward for me. But I loved all the other Branagh Shakespeare plays. Others which you didn't mention, Miss D. are Othello and Henry V, both outstanding.

Derek Jacobi has an awesome voice.
Monica my girlfriend Marika has the same inflection marIKa so I am used to it. I just love both of your names.
really go and get The Wrong Guy. You will laugh until you feel sick. ONe of my favorite parts is when Nelson(Dave Foley) wakes up in a hospital after hopping a train and eating ten tainted hams. His stomach has been pumped and the cranky lady doctor is trying to get some information from him. He is woozy and asks what happened to him and she tells him then asks his name. He does not want to give his name because he thinks he is a wanted man for murder. He looks around the room and says" my name, my name is Jones, enema bag Jones. She says" no it's not you're simply lying to me." Then he looks aroung once more and says " my real name is ...Harris, Doctor Dale Harris. which is her name. A Jewish comedian named David Steinburgh directed the movie and there are so many hilarious one liners and visually hilarious moments you can barely take a break from laughing.

I don't personally consider my ten favorite movies to necessarily be the ten best movies out there--what I mean is, there's no accounting for my taste. :p

In no particular order:

Aliens
O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Major League
Jurassic Park
War of the Worlds (in spite of Tom Cruise ;) )
[insert John Wayne and/or Dean Martin cowboy movie here]
Memphis Belle
Narnia: the Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Kill Bill
The Mummy

Honorable Mention: The Great Raid, Gladiator, Godzilla

I don't really watch a lot of movies, so my knowledge is pretty limited. And let's face it: when you love dinosaurs, cowboys and mummies, and would probably be ecstatic if only there were a blessed movie that combined all three, your list is not going to contain the epitomes of tasteful viewing. :D

Not in order, but:

Fight Club, provoking.
Gummo, challenging.
Saw, they took an idea that could be boring, used a small budget and made it really amazing.
Equilbrium, a good action movie with a really awesome, emotional plot.
Sin City, my mindless action movie.
Elephant, touching.
South Park, gods of comedy
The Machinist, a Christian Bale movie, the only actor I really like. Not to say other actors aren't awesome at what they do.
Batman Begins, it floored me when I saw it. I don't even like Batman.
Training Day, so quotable.

Honourable mention: Ken Park, Korine and Clark are gutsy, especially together, this movie proves it.
Dark City, good story.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, hilarious.

I also feel like I'm forgetting a movie, but oh well.

I would have included Rocky movies but I love the whole series like a child so picking one would be too hard.

My first 5 films always remain the same, but the other 5 tend to shift around in their placement, or drop off the list for other films. So, here is the current list:

1) Glory
2) Beauty and the Beast
3) The Empire Strikes Back
4) Field of Dreams
5) The Shawshank Redemption
6) Seven Brides for Seven Brothers
7) Amadeus
8) Goodfellas
9) Sweeney Todd***
10) Much Ado About Nothing

*** "West Side Story" would generally be in that spot, but now that I have seen "Sweeney Todd", and liked it as much as I did, that has replaced WSS. "Gone With The Wind" and a silent movie called "The Big Parade" are a couple of movies that go in and out of my top 10 list quite often. It is all based on my mood. :)

Well...it's too hard to pick just 10 films of all time as favorites but I can try and pick my top ten of right now, though next week it'll be completely different. These are just the movies I'm watching and enjoying right now.
Days of Heaven (Malick)
Taegukgi (Kang)
Rio Bravo (Hawks)
Cries and Whispers (Bergman)
The Crowd (Vidor)
Jules et Jim (Truffaut)
Ivan's Childhood (Tarkovsky)
The Lost Weekend (Wilder)
His Girl Friday (Hawks)
Once Upon a Time in America (Leone)

These are by no means my favorites, just at this very moment.

You have all mentioned excellent movies. This is my little attempt:

1) El Cid (I love epics)

2) Snows of Kilimanjaro (what an amazing ensemble)

3) Gone with the wind (I cannot help it)

4) Ivanhoe

5) Romeo and Juliet (Of course the Zeffirelli version)

6) Last of the Mohicans (When Daniel Day-Lewis is there, I can only stare in wonder)

7) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (As the amazing rock-god Marco has said "is that a cliche or what?)

8) Macbeth by Roman Polanski (Perhaps, the best Shakespeare adaptation ever made)

9) The Night of the Generals (Another outstanding ensemble)

10) Henry V

Following so close that I cannot ignore them are:

The Last Temptation of Christ
Hamlet (Zeffirelli's TRUE masterpiece)
Beckett (A tour-de-force of O'Toole and Burton)

Weisinheimer
01-19-2008, 02:27 PM
The Princess Bride
Stranger than fiction
Fiddler on the roof
Life is Beautiful
a Beautiful Mind
The sixth Sense
Unbreakable
Cinderella Man
The prestige
Pride and Prejudice (the 2005 version)

I think that's 10. They're not in any kind of order.

It's a very good adaption, but I think Kurosawa's 'Throne of Blood' is the best version of Macbeth (though it's a bit of a departure).

Yes, on a second thought I think I would agree with you. Especially the expression of "Lady Macbeth"'s face, in the famous sleep-walking scene is brilliantly captured by Kurosawa's subtle technique.:thumbs_up ;)

*Literally beams smile* :D Oh wow!
In all honesty, I just like him as Anakin with the pretty hair in III. He's evil, yes; but he's mighty dreamy haha :p
I jest... I am not usually like this but it was a sad occasion when I was sat in alone, almost weeping at the sight of those beautiful locks being burnt to a crisp.

Well, as a straight male, I'm less prone to swoon over a good-looking man. Still, I'm secure enough that I can say who I think does and doesn't look good - for Hayden Christiansen, I just don't see it. In that age bracket, I'm more impressed with James Franco, at least on the talent end.

Overrated, aye. Decent film, but suffered from the raging political metaphor. I realize that that was the point, but I don't see why they had to be so heavy-handed about it. If you're going to make a terrorist your protagonist, don't make him into a hero like the film does.

Think I did this once but here's my current mood: Criteria is that even though I have seen it bfore more then willing to watch it again.

1. Adventures of Robin Hood (Erroll Flynn)
2. Jaws (ignore the sequels you only needed this one)
3. Zulu (takes place in Haggard's time setting for his Allan Quatermain books)
4. Captain Horatio Hornblower (Gregory Peck may not be British but you wouldn't lnow it from watching this.)
5. Alien/Aliens--can never make up my mind which I like best
6. The Great Escape (James Gardner and Steve McQueen)
7. For a Few Dollars More (favorite of the Man with No Name trilogy)
8. Sleeping Beauty (I have this very weird crush Disney's Malificent and she makes a great dragon--suspect women issues involved here)
9. Pollyanna (this people movie justs works if you let it--the people going from grumps to 'real' people is enchanting)
10. The Mummy (Boris Karloff version chills me on every viewing.)
BONUS very Guilty Pleasure movie: Corvette Summer (perfect fluff and the real reason I started watching Designing Women for my favorite of the ladies.)
RUNNER UP BONUS: My Bodyguard (perfect odd couple good buddies movie)
