This is a pure love story written by Nicholas Spark.
I think there is a certain philosophy of love involved in it.
The deep love and strong memory for your former wife who has already passed away, and the love for your existing lover who you really care,
what is needed to correctly deal with the situation?
The hero realizes it at last, but it's too late for he dies in an accident like
his wife. And the heroine sends a bottle with a message into the sea to express gratitude to him, for the time spent with him, for the time consoling his sadness. And she believes that it's all done by destine. She is destined to meet another man, to gradually forget him-her former lover.
So i think love itself can cure love.
What's your opinion?

There is a lot of "moving on" in the novel that you speak of. Garrett loses his wife, and he learns to love another woman when he never thought it would be possible again. Essentially, the same thing happens to Theresa when Garrett dies, though it is not really shown - after his death, she has to move on as well, and learn to love another... which is really just a neverending cycle.

I thought the story line was rather predictable and forced to be honest. And the ending was... blah!

I heartily agree. The only part of the story that I didn't find utterly superficial and drippy was Garrett's father (Paul Newman in the movie adaption). Nicholas Sparks just isn't for me, at least the book showed me that :).
