Do you think about it? We set a date and go online.
Maybe we can chat somewhere else - other than MSN for instance.
Or what about a shout box?

Oh alright. I guess we can do that but I think, with all 28,000 members, or just the majority, don't you think confusion will take over? Don't get me wrong; I also want everyone to be on. Then we could be like this! >> http://www.cosgan.de/images/midi/musik/k015.gif

I really wish we could meet in person =( I meet alot of my online friends.
But i`m too far. If I were an imployee who gets a vacation with a ticket or so, I would definitely have gone over.
But Lainy, not all of the 20,000 members will go online xD!
Why don`t we try to fix sth like a java chatroom?

What about a Litnet IRC (internet relay chat) Channel?
?? i don't know what that is . . . i also really wish i could meet all of you in person!!!! :(
i wish there was some way to PM everybody at once. Then we really could get all of the LitNet-ers on! :D

Well, I belong to a site that has it's own IRC channel that members and guests can use. One can use a chat client or chat via their browser by utilizing a java applet thingy.
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) provides a way of communicating in real time with people from all over the world. It consists of various separate networks (or "nets") of IRC servers, machines that allow users to connect to IRC. The largest nets are EFnet (the original IRC net, often having more than 32,000 people at once), Undernet, IRCnet, DALnet, and NewNet.
I don't know what setting up a channel entails though and naturally that is something Admin would do.

What about a Litnet IRC (internet relay chat) Channel?
No can do. :)
Check the Litnet forum sub section. Chat room, system wise, can not be moderated.

Actually an IRC channel can be moderated. The channel I use has several moderators who are only moderators in the channel, not the website. The channel and the site are two seperate entities and can be accessed through the site via java (browser) or by using an irc chat client. Together, but seperate.

Really? Wait, maybe I mis-intepreted the post. If the mods are not online, can it be moderated? Maybe thats's the reason

Not all of us use IRC :(
A shout box is a box at the top of the forum, where only users online can chat together while surfing the forum!
I suppose it`s the best idea.

*sighhh* I was only making a suggestion! No need to bold everything, is there?
I took the idea of "chat" literally, and to me a shoutbox is not chatting. Actually a shoutbox would be a nice idea though. It is fun and almost like chitchat.
(and as I pointed out any channel can be joined by anybody using a browser...no additional programs necessary. and also, the question of moderating is not out of the question because the channel is a seperate thing and can have it's own moderators. However it just doesn't seem like something that would happen....)

humm I kind of like the channel idea in away it takes the pressure off the mods and such because it would be totally seperate only thing with that Im pretty sure the same rule as the live chats will kick in in that your not supposed to reffer to things discussed there with people here without permission
Hiya kathy:wave: did you have a good christmas?

Hi Night, Hi poetess.
My holiday was great Night, how is your seasonal thing going? :D
Regarding a channel, there could easily be mods and since it is seperate entity members here could volunteer to moderate the channel. I am looking into setting one up actually that I could give access to litnet members. Obviously it would not be an "official" Litnet channel but it is a place where many of us could group together and "chat" at the same time. (not necessarily a one on one thing, although you can send PMs to people in the channel if you wish). Again, NO special software to chat in an IRC channel is necessary, you can use your browser, although you can download some free chat clients as well. You can also surf the "net as well as chatting.
Sooo, in short...no promises that I can do this, but if I can I think it would be fun.

IRC is a program used to chat, as simple as I could explain
I guess it`s the abbreviation of Internet Relay Chat.
ShoutBox is another program, placed at the top of a web-page, where people can chat together instantly.

IRC isn't a program, it is a collection of channels that you can log into to chat on. You connect to the channels using your browser (Like Internet Explorer or Firefox) or you can use a chat client, such as the one I use, mIRC.
What is IRC, and how does it work?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) provides a way of communicating in real time with people from all over the world. It consists of various separate networks (or "nets") of IRC servers, machines that allow users to connect to IRC. The largest nets are EFnet (the original IRC net, often having more than 32,000 people at once), Undernet, IRCnet, DALnet, and NewNet.
Generally, the user (such as you) runs a program (called a "client") to connect to a server on one of the IRC nets. The server relays information to and from other servers on the same net. Recommended clients:
* UNIX/shell: ircII
* Windows: mIRC
* Macintosh clients
Be sure to read the documentation for your client!
Once connected to an IRC server on an IRC network, you will usually join one or more "channels" and converse with others there. On EFnet, there often are more than 12,000 channels, each devoted to a different topic. Conversations may be public (where everyone in a channel can see what you type) or private (messages between only two people, who may or may not be on the same channel). IRC is not a "game", and I highly recommend you treat people you meet on IRC with the same courtesy as if you were talking in person or on the phone, or there may be serious consequences.
A shoutbox is a small area that you can leave little messages or "shouts" (not to be confused with ShoutGrace :p ) for example you could say Hi to someone or tell somebody to check their email...stuff like that. A shoutbox is usually on the main page of a website.

Well, don't worry about it too much. I will not be able to be on a channel 24/7 and wouldn't expect somebody else to either. *edit* although don't forget you can be on litnet (or any other webiste) and in channel at the same time.
I am looking into two places, one of which I am already registered and the other where I am not. Since I am so inept at things sometimes I have asked a friend to help me, but he wasn't feeling well today so he said he would help tomorrow.
I would be the channel operator which means I would be sort of the official moderator and I would have to see about giving op privileges to a few others as well. It would also be great to have unofficial operators to help me. I think I can have some scripts set up to automate some of those tasks, such as kicking people who abuse the channel. More details will probably be available tomorrow.

I would like to see how it works, Kathy. We can start in small and then implement bigger concepts, as in, for a few hour when its most likely many users will be available, and then extend to 24/7.

Ok, well each website would tailor the appearance of their own shoutbox...books have different covers don't they? ;)
Update: I have registered a nickname and will most likely have a channel and instructions by the weekend. You will not need any special software to chat in the channel, but you will need to have Java and javascript enabled in your browser. I am going to post some tips and all that, so don't worry to folks who feel they aren't IRC savvy, it will be very easy and fun. :D
But isn't this shoutbox thing very similar to the already existing Live Chat thread???
The only thing that would make sense would be the IRC chat indeed, as it would be a chat separate from the forum, as someone already said. But I don't use IRC no I ever intend on starting. You can find me on MSN Messenger and I'm way to addicted to that to start using something more.. I'd never leave the computer if I did.

Okay Kathy, so IRC on the way?
I will register one too.
Koa, we talked about MSN, as hey said, it might be really loaded..
Still I love it :p
I think msn would be a great idea instead of a shoutbox, as shoutboxes are more limited when it comes to chatting space/word limits/reference. Msn also happens to support users of Yahoo IM. Since majority of the users here either have YIM or msn, it'd probably be a better alternative.
Would be cool if we set up a giant chatroom and just added people in as they sign online - that way we could meet and introduce each other as well as anyone else who we don't have on our list (not to mention the really handy chat logs..I love saving awesome discussions and referring back to them later on). :D

Nobody needs to register a nickname, the only reason I had to was because I am founding the channel. IRC isn't an instant messenger program like MSN messenger or anything like that. If folks don't wish to join the channel, that is certainly your choice.
Ok, the channel is founded. There are a few things I need to iron out with it, and since I seem to have started a cold (I got a bad chill yesterday! ) I hope all are patient and bear with me. I hope to have things up and running in a few days. I will have some more information about basic commands, how you will be able to access the channel--all of that good stuff in a couple of days.
What is IRC?
IRC (Internet Relay Chat) is a multi-user, multi-channel chatting system. Imagine sitting in front of your computer and "talking" through typed messages with either one person or many other people from all over the Internet, all in real time! Best of all, once you get set up, chatting on IRC is totally free!
Channels (sometimes incorrectly called "chat rooms") are where people may meet and mingle. You may join these channels and participate in the group discussion, or you may elect to chat privately with individuals.
Koa, we talked about MSN, as hey said, it might be really loaded..
Still I love it :p
Yes, I didn't think it was a possible idea anyway, conversations with too many people get really confusing.
Anyway, IRC it'll be, as I see :)
