View Full Version : Name needed for a young green dragon.

Taliesin

As it came to be, as a early gift from a friend we have become an owner and keeper of a young green dragon.
But alas, what to name it?
It has red eyes, so a slightly sinister touch wouldn't harm.
Names we have thought of and that have been suggested to us:

Dorian
Scherlock
Bilbo
Gleep
Kappa
Svidrigailov
Nehemah or something like that. Don't remember it accurately. It is the name of a Jewish fallen angel of prostitution.
Black
Butterfly
Sammel
Clementine

Do you have any good ideas what to name a dragon?

Laindessiel

Constantine the Great Beast.

But it's best if one of its fellow species would recommend one.

*megaphoning Uuuuncle Peeeeeeeeennn!*

I checked that out in my dictionary of fallen angels but it aint there. if you are going along those lines heres a few fellow fallen whos names you could chose from.

Asmodeus (another name for sammael aka the devil)
Carnivean
Gressil
Moloch
Nelchael
Rumael
Azzael
Yomyael.

I think the first two are good, esp Carnivean makes me think if a meat eating Dinosaur or something!

i just came across an Nehinah who was the Angel invoked in necromantic operations.

Yes. Pretty dark stuff and big beasts I can imagine with those names, Niamh.

I Know. Hummm maybe i should hold on to them for some of my own characters. ;)

I got the out of a Dictionary of Angels including fallen Angels by Gustav Davidson.

Interesting. Will you post that story of yours after it's done? Hey, with characters named like those, it must be dark and lurid plot.

A dragon? You could go the Silmarillion route and choose Glaurung. He was the first of the dragons bred by Morgoth, he was a fire-breather but didn't fly and he was a very badass dragon.

Seth
Horus
Serapis
Tauret
Thoth
Ptah
Sekhmet

Satis
Ma'at
Aten (Woh, creator of the universe, according to the old Egyptians :))
Menthu
Sobek

Ankh (as in the not so much a cross thing, means life)
Wadjet
Nephthys

And many, many more posibilities ofcourse, which begs the question, is it a boy or a girl?

errr Aimus it Atun actually aten ( should be Atun as in Atoon) was on Ikhnatun's God his idea of a single unified God creator of the universe symbolised by the golden disk of the sun--- This little belief got him excuted and erased from annuals.

Ma'at is a favoirte with me God of wisdom but ironically his name in modern arabic means (he)Died.

And Nightshade, I've always pronounced it like 'smog' although I have no idea if that's the correct pronounciation.

This is a good idea, Scher. I read that story of "The Tale of Taliesin" and "A radiant brow" is really a good meaning. :)

Is it a male or a female dragon ?

How about a name borrowed from Nordic mythology ?
I remember liking the names of the two ravens Odin had by his side, Hugin ("thought") and Munin ("memory"). Though those wouldn't sound sinistre to me...
Good luck with the baptising, don't let him/her bite you ! ;)

"How about a name borrowed from Nordic mythology ?"

That would be Fafnir, then. He started as a dwarf, but turned into a dragon - presumably a very small dragon.

Or maybe Nithhogger - the dragon that gnawed at the roots of Yggdrasil.

As a child I had many pets.

Much to the chagrin of my parents I named each and every one of them Fluffy. There was Fluffy-Gerbil, Fluffy-Cat, Fluffy-Dog, Fluffy-Turtle, Fluffy-Goldfish, Fluffy-Canary and Fluffy-Iguana.

I must be the only person in the world whos parents were relieved when I came out and told them that I'm gay..... no grandkids named Fluffy-Child.

So, of course, I'd like to suggest........ Fluffy-Dragon.

Astaroth

Astaroth (also Ashtaroth, Astarot, and Asteroth) is a Grand Duke of Hell; his main assistants are four demons called Aamon, Pruslas, Barbatos and Rashaverak. In art, in the Dictionnaire Infernal, Astaroth is depicted as a nude man with dragon-like wings, hands and feet, a second pair of feathered wings after the main, wearing a crown, holding a serpent in one hand, and riding a wolf or dog.

Yeah Tal, tell us the name! :)

Okay.
After thinking about Dorian, Sherlock, Svidrigailov, Bilbo and Faafnir, we actually chose a completely different name.

He is called....
*drumroll*
...Autumn.

There are quite a few reasons behind this.
1)We like autumn
2)The Game of Thrones reference. Do you get it?
3)In Estonian, the word "tali" means winter and we are often called "Tali", because Taliesin is too long. So, autumn would fit in perfectly.

Sügis.
(we don't expect English -speakers to get this correct. Estonian phonetics are quite different from English phonetics)
But if you want to knwo how it sounds
This (http://kiisu.eki.ee/) is a small Estonian text-to-voice- program.
One enters the sentence/word/phrase into the box where there is written "Loe seda lauset". And clicks the button "Lobise"

Anyway, surprise surprise surprise; that's life! :pWell, I am surely not an expert on Basil's poetry taste (unlike you Pensive) but when I read the lines, they rang a bell though I could not be sure from where straight away (read it back at university probably; can't be sure) so had to do a little search to figure out where the lines were from exactly.

I think it is a sort of standard poem to teach undergrad students. :D One of the two or three Keats poems usually taught? Or is that only where I'm from?

“Then in a wailful choir the small gnats mourn
Among the river sallows, borne aloft
Or sinking as the light wind lives or dies;
And full-grown lambs loud bleat from hilly bourn;
Hedge-crickets sing; and now with treble soft
The red-breast whistles from a garden-croft;
And gathering swallows twitter in the skies.”
