Take this as a fun post. I hope no one really has any of these phobias. But I found a few humorous or relevant to lit net. ;)

Wiccaphobia: Fear of witches and witchcraft
Oh doesn't MacBeth wish he had had this. :D

Technophobia- Fear of technology.
Well, as an engineer, I would be out of a job if I had this.

Perhaps if Sleepywitch has me read another Shakespeare play (like Antony and Cleopatra) and then not join the discussion I may get this. ;)

Theophobia- Fear of gods or religion.
If you get involved in some of the religious thread fights around here, one can easily acquire this. ;)

Venustraphobia- Fear of beautiful women.
This one is too easy to make a joke with. I'll just have to let it pass.

Menophobia- Fear of menstruation.
I have this. Really I do. If I should happen to start mensturating, I'm going to be really really scared. ;)

Proctophobia- Fear of rectums.
Why are rectums so funny?

Ideophobia- Fear of ideas.
Are they usually high school drop outs? :p

Anglophobia- Fear of England or English culture, etc.
Also know as the French. :)

Peladophobia- Fear of bald people.
At my age, just about all the men I know are bald or almost bald.

Chaetophobia- Fear of hair.
What if you have both Peladophobia and Chaetophobia at the same time? :D

Gamophobia- Fear of marriage.
I know lots of men with this. Lots. ;)

Spheksophobia is me! I've been absolutely terrified of any stinging, hovering insect for as long as I remember, but wasps especially. I see one and I shrink away, hunch my shoulders up, pull my hands up to my chest or face, and whimper involuntarily.

I got stung for the first time last summer. Landed on my hand, I flip out and scrape it off really quick, whimper-squealing pathetically. Didn't even know I'd been stung until about thirty seconds later. "Oh! Ow." Like pricking myself with a needle, only tinier (not less intense... just smaller in size) and continual. It sort of swelled, and it itched but every time I touched it I felt like I was pricking myself again. It was gone before the day was out. Not a big deal, right? Right. So I figured next time I saw a wasp, I'd be able to approach the situation more rationally, right? Wrong. Another wasp the next day--shrink, hunch, hand-clasping, whimper, "Daaaad... Daaad, heeellllp...."

Oooh, that and needles. Just seeing one--not going in or anything, just sitting there--makes me feel sick.

phobia...I guess the closest phobia for me is arachnaphobia... otherwise most things don't bug me, I used to be afraid of the dark, and I suppose I used to have necrophobia, and a fea of hites, but not anymore (especially after 2 years of bio major) but spiders, for some reason still make me jump, just before I squash'em into the next world, but they still make me jump.

Teutophobia - Fear of German or German thingsPerhaps if Sleepywitch has me read another Shakespeare play (like Antony and Cleopatra) and then not join the discussion I may get this. ;)

Eyy ! That would be a very rude generalisation, and you know that ! :p

I found "Arachbutyrophobia" the most hilarious one .

Spheksophobia is me! I've been absolutely terrified of any stinging, hovering insect for as long as I remember, but wasps especially. [...] Oooh, that and needles. Just seeing one--not going in or anything, just sitting there--makes me feel sick.
The same two for me. Good that I live in an area where there are bees' and wasps' nests under every other roof .

But with me, needles is even worse. I don't mind seeing them, but I can't stand them going in for vaccination or blood sample. I don't faint or anything during the procedure, but I'm incredibly nervous for a week before it and sick the day after it.

Although I wouldn't call them phobias, but I worry a bit about becoming ill or being involved in an accident. However, no Dystychiphobia or Kosophobia for me (yet :D).

Boy, must I sound insane :D.

That was an interesting list, thanks for posting, Poetess !

Arachnophobia, definitely. Although, I fear flies the most. I have been known to start screaming and run out of the room at high speed. But it's much better now. I can even calmly stand up, get my things and leave the room. And lock it. Before going to get someone to "kill these infernal things, please!", somewhat less calm, admittedly.

Wow, you sound like a couple of girls. :D :p :p :p

Only kidding. I worked with someone who got stung by a bee and didn't know he was allergic and nearly died. After that he was insane over bees. He would carry his antidote bag with him everywhere and was petrified of stepping out. He completely gave up gardening and I know he was going to some psychologist for it.

Now guess who's allergic, too ? :(
It has never been that bad with me, though. I got stung a couple of times over the years; it turns into a nasty multi-coloured lump and hurts for 2 or 3 weeks, not only the spot but the whole part of the body the beast decided to sting. And that is something I definetely try to avoid by all means.
Bees, however, at least give honey, but who the heck needs wasps ?!? :flare:

When I touch blood. When the blood drips from my skin!!! If you want me dead in an instant, show me a guillotined person.

Well, okay, I think I am not comfortable in closed spaces, I mean places that are very narrow, hardly any ventilation. Whenever I see on tv someone going in for an MRI scan, inside that huge machine, I think i'll come out dead if I ever have to get this done or will surely behave like a child throwing tantrums so that I can get away without the scan :D. Perhaps, not dead, and the fear factor doesnt seem to be very high, but this definitely makes me uncomfortable.

The closest thing to my phobia I found was Hypnophobia- Fear of sleep or of being hypnotized but that's not quite right. I have a very intense phobia of being sedated and it makes dealing with my sleeping issues very difficult because most of the medications prescribed for that are by nature, sedating and if I start to feel that unnatural sleepiness and heaviness, I just panic. It ends up having the opposite effect because I fight the effects of it so hard. I had nasal surgery a few years back and I wasn't nervous about the procedure at all, it wasn't until I got to the pre-op room and saw all those sedated zombies that I started to freak. The doctor was worried about my high heart rate, which is high anyway because of some heart condition but when I told him how panicked I was about these zombies, they couldn't even stand up, they had to be wheeled into surgery, he assured me that that sedation prior to surgery wasn't necessary so that made me happy but coming out of the general anesthesia was awful, I don't even want to talk about it. :p

My 12 year old son has Emetophobia- Fear of vomiting. And not just a mild case, he has to be on medication or else every other phrase out of his mouth would be, "Do you think I'm going to throw up?" That boy can get a scratch on his arm and somehow connect it to throwing up. He's a good example of how a silly little phobia can completely overwhelm a life. The upside is that he's probably never going to be a drinker, once he heard that you can throw up from drinking alcohol, he turned into a temperance enthusiast.

And my other son has Didaskaleinophobia- Fear of going to school.

Well, I've never quite found the name for this but I have a fear of sleeping at night. I can sleep at night though it's a very wakeful sleep usually lasts for only an hour or two and in order to fall asleep I have to spend about two hours prior to that lying in the dark, usually music or a movie helps so I'm focused on that and fall asleep from extreme tiredness. Other than that I usually have to find time to sleep during the day (I have a period of 2 hours inbetween classes where I normally sleep) so I end up with 4 or 5 hours of sleep in a day usually and on weekends, usually more. People always think I'm afraid of the dark or night when I explain this, but actually that is my favorite part of the day, I prefer it I'm not scared of the night just sleeping during it.
I think this fear developed when I was around 14 and as far as I can tell I think most of it came from that time when I had an obsession with dying, and just the association with sleep and death and lying there in a dark room and going to sleep, scared the hell out of me. I am getting better, not falling asleep but usually I can stay asleep or have a bit more of a sound sleep if I can manage to fall asleep.

Hey dear, well you can call it Hypnophobia. It`s all about sleeping. Everyone of us must have had this phobia when he/she was young enough.

Lately, I started noticing that my 3-year-old neighbor is having some sort of phobia of closing a door. When she wants to enter a room i`m in, she stands outside and ask me not to shut the door when she enters.

OMG! I turned out to be stuffed with fears! However i`m a normal person. These are not my only fears, yet i`ll state the most important two now, and down some others.. later one i`ll post another fears of mine!

IMP:
*
Bogyphobia- Fear of bogeys or the bogeyman. (it kills me if i look underbed, under a couch, or in a closet)*

Bathmophobia- Fear of stairs or steep slopes.*

Climacophobia- Fear of stairs, climbing, or of falling downstairs.*
*(I just call my sister to turn on the lights of the building before I go up, especially when the elevator is off and i`ll have to go climbing stairs. Morever, I might lose mind or conscience if I was on stairs and someone is climbing it behind me, no matter if this person is some floors away or next to me)

then comes:

Acrophobia/Altophobia- Fear of heights.
Aeroacrophobia- Fear of open high places.
Agraphobia- Fear of sexual abuse.
Androphobia- Fear of men.

Actually, I've been told I have somniphobia by a doctor Poetess, but since it only bothers me at night it's kind of a different case, where I can have perfectly normal daytime sleeping patterns but extreme difficulty sleeping at night.
Also, I have an obsessive compulsive disorder (and a few others) that make me sort of weird about certain things and I show tendencies to certain other phobias if things are not exact. I lean a bit towards Spermophobia (I always thought it was jsut called germaphobia), where depending on what it is, I will become absolutely terrified of certain things (this leads to odd situations since I try to be extremely polite). For instance if I'm drinking something and there is a single speck in the liquid I am utterly utterly repulsed, and if I notice it while I'm drinking a gag reflex kicks in and I get extremely frightened (I don't know why) or if I notice it after I've drank some, this of course with my obsessiveness leads me to checking a glass before use and sometimes washing it before each use (In my house I have my own set of glassware that others can't use). But in other situations something like that bothers me, so it's not full blown.
There are a few other weird things, that go along with me, but I think those two would be the ones people would notice the most.

Themis, this i`m not sure about for one case (IMO): if the pre-word combined with the word "Phobia" is originally greek, then Hypnophobia will definitely mean the phobia of sleep.

On the other hand, if the word is originally basic`ly English, then it would have to do with Hypnotism..

However, they both are about a sleep, but the first is due to natural reason (which is drowsiness).

I have always had a fear of large dogs, although it's not so pronounced as to be a phobia. Mostly 'cause for a while it seemed like every big dog was chasing me across the street. I get nervous and jumpy around them, and when I come across one I step behind someone else to avoid it and jump about three feet if it barks.

If I do have an actual phobia, it would be a fear of public speaking. My voice trembles and my hands shake uncontrollably, and I have a little trouble breathing. I just can't do it! Even when there's like only two people (strangers) that I have to present to.

In my 30's I developed PTSD, because I was a victim of an aggravated assault, and though it is usually curable, I never managed to get back to 100 percent, because some of my attendants over the past ten years have made me fearful, and the system takes its toll on one, so it is hard for me to partition off my general anxiety in situation X from a particular phobia, but city rodents I think count as one. I am not sure about my fear of travel. I used to be fine in relation to that, but as a quad doing field work in not safe places, my internal confidence eroded, and being alone with a driver at night tends to make me hyperventilate, even if I know the majority just want to finish their tours and clock out, though on buses I still usually manage.

I have this stupid arachnophobia, because of my mom. Everytime there was a spider in the house, she'd flip out like it was going to kill her. Now my brother and I are the same. It's really inconvenient, especially since I'm so outdoorsy. So this spring, I'm going to go outside and collect as many species of spiders as I can in glass jars, and I'll slowly try to overcome my phobia by first holding the jar of the least scary, then opening it, then letting it crawl on the floor, then letting it crawl on me, then moving on to the next spider until I'm not afraid anymore.

This particular part of the thread about the spiders kinda made me lawl. No offense, but where I live, we have REAL spiders.

http://www.vc-herzberg.de/australia/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/huntsman-spider.jpg

The very common huntsman spider, although not very venomous, can grow to be the size of a dinnerplate in the bush. They eat other spiders, and as such tend to be incredibly fast runners. I personally knew a girl who was driving her car gingerly along, when she pulled down her sun visor, flipping a full grown huntsman directly on to her face. Suffice to say, as most of us would, she drove her car directly into a tree and wrote it off. She was ok tho.

http://www.jonco48.com/blog/spiders_small.jpg

They too, like your Wolf-spider Juniper, care for their babies. Which of course just gives most people a terrible case of the whillies.

There are heaps of more poisonous ones, some of the most deadly in the world of course. But they arent nearly as creepy so.

However I digress. My personal fear is of Earwigs, which has absolutely no basis, their existence just offends me.

I am also terrified of cliffs and other giant hieghts, which is why I enjoy jumping off them so much. Preferably into water.

Urgh, why does that last one even feel the need to exist, it just shouldn't be allowed, it's too grotesque. I am never going to Australia if that's the kind beasts it harbours. *shivers*

I didn't have a phobia of spiders before. I might now.

I guess you heard that Australia was a prisoner dumping ground "in the day"; the idea was that everything remotely human was supposed to die; instead, we got a bunch of rattlesnake catching, spider touching, women chasing, hard drinking mens men...who would have thought:lol:

Ok guys, we have a bird eating spider (also the size of the above pic) kept in a glass lair, in our lounge/family room... He is my son's (Snape) and he actually uses the a pic of him for his avatar. My biggest phobia is agoraphobia, which is the fear of large crowded areas. I never liked being closed in an elevator full of people, so I thought I had claustrophobia. I used to run cables for TV distribution, and in doing so I found myself in some very tight enclosed areas...and I was quite comfortable there. But one day I was in Walmart on a busy day...big open area, but with lots of people. It wasn't the small place that made me anxious in the elevator...it was the people.

Agoraphobia...not to be confused with Angoraphobia...the fear of wearing rabbit hair.

I love to fly, whether commercially or in a little plane, and really enjoy being on the water as well. However, I have this weird thing about overnight ferries (and cruise ships) after reading about the Estonia disaster.
It's not much a phobia as there being certain things I need to do whenever I'm on a boat like that, or even just a car ferry to Long Island. I always look for the life jackets and memorize the escape routes. I rarely sleep and have to sit on an upper, outer deck if it's an option.

I've never been, but I feel like Centrailia, PA, or any situation where the ground could open up and drop you into fire, would be creepy as anything.

Mine's a pretty common one, I'm afraid ( ;) ). Needles. I hate, hate, hate, hate them. I seriously rethought getting married because, by state law, I had to have a blood test to get married. I wondered if marriage was worth it.

Flu shots? Hate them.

Quick story: When I had to get my childhood booster (immunization) shots, the nurses put me in a sort of straight jacket for kids because I would try to kick, scratch and bite them if I was otherwise unrestrained.

It's totally irrational too: I'm not scared of blood; I know shots don't hurt; I know all that stuff. . . but man. I don't do needles.

Heights...even watching them on screen. Like the skyscraper scene in King Kong or the platform fight scene in Star Trek. Even though heights scare me (a lot) it's doesn't really make my life difficult, just hilarious at times :D

Also, it's not a phobia, but certain flying insects give me the screamin' heebie jeebies when they fly close to me. Moths (normal and giant) and those bugs that sit in trees and scream all day during summer...ugh...I only mention this because I had a giant moth encounter this evening, hehehe. The horror and skin crawlies are still fresh in my mind, lol! My family finds it hilarious and my mom always regrets not having a camera close by, seeing as I practically bounce off the walls trying to escape the little monsters!

Unfortunately (maybe) for me I'm not an over-achiever as I used to be like a decade ago, but I often experience the horrors of failure more times than wanted or needed (maybe because I'm not an over-achiever anymore).
