Ok I've been going crazy trying to find a book from my childhood days, I read it when I was ten or something :p but it was a great story and would love to find it again.

It was probably published early - mid 1900's, story about a boy, maybe an orphan, who finds a dog, I'm pretty sure it was a greyhound, maybe a whippet, but a racing breed of some sort.

In an Oliver Twistian way they are both 'strays/orphans', been abused/neglected, and 'adopt' each other and deal with various struggles of living on the streets, fending for themselves etc. Setting is either England or America.. Anybody know what it might be titled?? or who wrote it? any hints/leads/tips would be gratefully appreciated :D

Logos, perhaps you could browse here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_fictional_dogs), see if something rings a bell.

Um.. I can only sort of think of a book called Wolf Brothers, but that's a fantasy, and more sixth-seventh grade level. I'm pretty sure it's not what you're looking for.
