Hello everybody! :D I'm looking for a book I read many years ago, and I was hoping somebody here might be able to help me. It would be written about the same time period as Jane Austin, I think. A rich man marries a young girl from a family with a bad reputation for gambling. He is warned that his wife is the same as the rest of the family, and may misuse his money, but he ignores the warnings. The young woman loves her husband, and tries to be careful with the money he allows her, but pretty soon through helping out her brother who had gaming debts, she goes into debt herself. She also bought some dresses that were far too expensive, and she wishes she hadn't. Most of the novel is then spent, I think, with trying to find a way to pay for these things without her husband finding out, so that he didn't become angry at her. Then her young sister-in-law, who is under her charge, steals some precious jewelry and runs away with a man. The husband believes his wife has taken and sold it, since the jewler had brought it back to him, recognizing it as his own, and said that a young lady with a thick veil had come in and sold it to him. In the end the heroin and her husband's friend find the girl, and all ends happily when the husband realizes his mistake and asks forgiveness of his wife. It closes with them hugging, I think.
