Hello everyone!

I just thought I'd drop in here and tell you all a little about myself. I'm 31 years old, just starting out (for real) in college. I up until recently was a computer geek and while I still have some tendencies, I am branching out and learning that there is a whole world beyond the computer screen. :-)

The low point came when I stopped myself at work one day and asked my self what will my life mean if I keep up this computer stuff when I'm dead and on "trial for my life" or something like that. The answer I gave was nothing and so a change.

Always when I would "read" something it was in a computer book or magazine. Every once in a blue moon would I read a novel. But I've since decided that I want to develop a habit of reading as they say and hence I found this discussion board.

My main interest right now is mainly reading the classics (you know those books listed that "every college student should read" sorts of books) and then there has to be some science fiction. In fact, one of my most favorite science fiction books is The Dark Beyond the Stars by Frank M. Robinson.

I look forward to reading and then looking here for past discussions if any and perhaps starting new discussions. In high school I was never good at "reading between the lines" to get the symbolism, etc. that was in say the Catcher and the Rye, but that is a skill I hope to develop.

I had a recent experience where I read the last few chapters and skimmed the first several chapters and the last few sentences of the book left me just hanging for the next book--but there wasn't one, at least yet. I just couldn't believe how "affected" I was but it was great. First thing I did was hit amazon to see what the next book was cause I was ready to go to town to get it but alas as I mentioned there wasn't one. It's really amazing how "connected" one can become to a television shows (star trek DSN for me) and books--just how much of an "escape" they really can provide.

Anyhow, nice to be here, and looking forward to a fun ride here!

Jason

Welcome to the forums, Jason! I'm very excited for you and your new life. I wonder if there's a similarity between the zealousness of a new religious convert, and that of a literary convert. Keep track of your impressions and devotion; We'll expect periodic updates around here. For research, you understand. :D Anyway, this is a great place to find out about, and discuss the multitude of literary stuff in the world.

Sometimes a nasty word anyway, symbolism.;)

Enjoy!
