View Full Version : What kind of weather is it today in your head/soul?

This isn't some in depth question about life and philosophy-- more like a different version of How are you doing today?
I'll get it started.
Scattered showers, lots of lightning and thunder- but that's my favorite kind of weather, so it's definitely a good sign... Anybody else?

Hey, this reminds me of that great opening paragraph in Herman Melville's Moby Dick:
Call me Ishmael. Some years ago- never mind how long precisely- having little or no money in my purse, and nothing particular to interest me on shore, I thought I would sail about a little and see the watery part of the world. It is a way I have of driving off the spleen and regulating the circulation. Whenever I find myself growing grim about the mouth; whenever it is a damp, drizzly November in my soul; whenever I find myself involuntarily pausing before coffin warehouses, and bringing up the rear of every funeral I meet; and especially whenever my hypos get such an upper hand of me, that it requires a strong moral principle to prevent me from deliberately stepping into the street, and methodically knocking people's hats off- then, I account it high time to get to sea as soon as I can. This is my substitute for pistol and ball. With a philosophical flourish Cato throws himself upon his sword; I quietly take to the ship. There is nothing surprising in this. If they but knew it, almost all men in their degree, some time or other, cherish very nearly the same feelings towards the ocean with me.
I always think of that on a cold rainy November day, "a damp drizzly November in my soul."

Hot and humid weather. I've been trying to write this essay for five hours now, and I just don't have the motivation. I've also been awake for five hours and my eyes still feel puffy. So I've been feeling very sluggish...

Virgil, I sustain that this was my own question... but I was recently made to read the openings of Melville, along with his Poor Man's Pudding, Rich Man's Crumbs, and that may have something to with the wording... You can be outrageously perceptive, my friend...

Trees are shaking madly, some falls down others stumble. Birds are not chirping as they do mostly. Butterflies are not flying by as they do usually.
What does it indicate? A storm! Stormy weather it is in Pensive's mind and soul.

Yesterday it was a brilliant exciting storm followed by an opalescent sunset. Now? It's grey, with miserable drizzling rain weighing down the clouds that threaten to break over my head. Which is why I am avoiding doing anything and am still sitting at my computer on the Lit Network. If I ignore everything else the clouds won't break and the rain won't come.
Maybe.

The sky is a brilliant blue with a slight cool breeze and the sun is shining brightly... Although there's occassionally a few wisps of pale white clouds that float by, but I know if I look towards the horizon the beautiful clear blue sky is there, with a faint tinge of pink and orange in it that just make it even more beautiful.
