I haven't read this novel in a long time, but from the standpoint of an English scholar you'll want to go through it and find ALL of Winston's interactions with women in the novel so that you can figure out what incident preceding this one encoded the idea of violence alongside women in his mind.

Winston sees the dark haired girl Julia on several encounters throughout the book. In the beggining of the novel he hated her because he couldnt "Have her" and because he seen her as a member of the party of the thought police. Winston in the book later thinks on hitting her in the head with a piece of Corol he bought from the Antique Shop.

(Does he hit her with it?... read and find out)

It doesnt seem to me that he hates her, because they have been in a couple "sexual relations" with one another, but she still seems kinda suspicious to me.. I guess we'll have to wait and find out whats really going on here..

Winston wasnts to hit her because he can't "Have" her. He cant have her because of the government.
