I am presently reading Cold Mountain at college, and I have found the themes in it really interesting. At first I thought the book was a romantic but from studying it in greater depth I have realised that there is much more to the story than first appears, the book looks at different issues such as society and self discovery. And in fact is hardly a romantic ... instead that is a backdrop theme. I wondered if anyone else had read the book and drawn any interesting aspects from it?

mmm.Enjoyed it in a Faulkner meets Elmore Leonard appreciation. A literary Two for Texas formula .I'm not putting it down ,but I bet if he came clean about what were the influences, I wouldnt be surprised if he admitted to EL( who I think ,along with Lee Buke and Sallis is a terrific US writer).
His description of the Civil War Era was excellent and I felt that he managed to bring off the characterisation in a historical context. This was patchy ,to say the least in the film. Usual dumb actors who cant get rid of their post modern egos to pick up the threads of the previous centuries. Ladies just didn't put over like that .They were hardworking ,but they were still down down in the social pecking order and .I'm old enough to remember my Great Grandma,I wish Nicole Kidman and co were .Jude Law did a great accent and couldnt fault him.

I agree with penelopea concerning the movie but I think Frazier’s greatest literary influence may have been Homer. I enjoyed reading Inman’s travels and travails as a 19th century version of Odysseus.

I started reading the book and didn't finish it but I saw the movie. I thought Renee Zellweger did a great job -- I usually like her performances anyway though.
