Every year? no..

"The 'New 7 Wonders of the World' campaign was begun in 1999 by Swiss adventurer Bernard Weber, with almost 200 nominations coming in from around the world."

Weber "felt it is time for something new to bring the world together" and to "symbolize a common pride in the global cultural heritage," said Tia B. Viering, spokeswoman for the campaign.

Weber's Switzerland-based foundation aims to promote cultural diversity by supporting, preserving and restoring monuments. It relies on private donations and revenue from selling broadcasting rights.

Nominations were whittled down by public votes to 77 last year. Then a panel of architectural experts, chaired by former UNESCO chief Federico Mayor, shortened the list to 21. Interest has grown as Weber and his 10-member team visit the 21 sites. Their final visit will be March 6 to New York's Statue of Liberty."

I see some "old" stuffs there (e.g. Taj Mahal, Pyramid). However, I don't see Borobudur temple, which I think, still the biggest Buddhist temple in the world

77 DAYS AND 13 HOURS LEFT TO VOTE ...

I voted for
Christ the Redeemer-Brazil
Easter Island- chile
Great Wall of China
Machu Picchu-Peru (because its amazing and i really want to see it)
Neuschwanstein Castle-Bavaria, germany.
Petra-Jordan
Taj Mahal-India

I didnt vote for Stonehenge as i believe that there are better examples and Prehistoric monuments in the world than it. For Example the three neolithic passage gaves at Bru Na Boinne in Ireland. The three tombs Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth are a thousand years older that the pyramids at giza.
Also the Laelines in Brittany france.

I voted for:

The Acropolis
The Chichen Itza Aztec Pyramid
The Easter Island Statues
The Great Wall of China
Stonehenge
Timbuktu
& Machu Picchu

I based my choices on what not only are great architecturally, but also have, for me, some degree of mysticism & inspiration about them. For this reason such structures as the eiffel tower; Neuschwanstein Castle; The Kremlin; The Statue of Liberty & Sydney Opera House came quite low on my list.

Oh I had forgotten about this. Thanks for reviving, Logos.

I voted for:
Acropolis
Colosseum
Easter Island Statues
Hagia Sophia
Great Wall
Petra
Statue of Liberty

I have a penchant for ancient stuff, so that accounts for most of my votes. Last one is in my home city. ;)

Good Question. Just got me thinking.... Or will they just be refared to as the 'new seven wonders of the world' and the we'll have fortheen? but then again arent some of the ones on the list not part of the original?

Only the pyramids were among the original 7 wonders. That's why they are considered part of the new 7 wonders already (you can't vote for them). To be exact, you could vote for them awhile ago but not anymore. On second thoughts they put them on the list anyway.

And yes, i think that they are going to be reffered to as the new seven wonders.

Niamh
04-20-2007, 06:21 PM
But what about the other six... they are no longer going to be wonders of the world? Is it because they nolonger exist that they are to be nolonger included?

manolia
04-20-2007, 06:27 PM
If you want my opinion, for historical reasons they won't be forgotten. They are described in so many ancient texts. The question is if we can take this vote seriously. I voted by the way. It's not a bad idea :)

Niamh
04-20-2007, 06:32 PM
I voted too but... some of them just dont have the myth and mystery about them that the collossus or babylon have...

manolia
04-20-2007, 06:35 PM
I agree. But who knows..maybe in many many years, the future generations may perhaps thing the same about them, as we do about the old ones. In most cases the distance of time creates mystery by itself.

Niamh

Niamh

Here's a short explanation:

http://www.new7wonders.com/index.php?id=8&L=0

The commonly known Seven Ancient Wonders of the World were all man-made monuments, selected by Philon of Byzantium in 200 B.C. Today, only the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt remain.

His selection of wonders was essentially a travel guide for fellow Athenians, and the stunning sites were all located around the Mediterranean basin, the then-known world.

The monuments he chose, to be remembered in perpetuity, were:

The Lighthouse of Alexandria

The Temple of Artemis

The Statue of Zeus

The Colossus of Rhodes
The Hanging Gardens of Babylon
The Mausoleum of Halicarnassus

The Pyramids of Egypt

All had been built between 2,500 B.C. and 200 B.C.

Now, just as Pierre de Coubertin revived the Olympic Games in 1896 with his modern version of the competition, New7Wonders founder Bernard Weber is seeking to revive the concept of the 7 Wonders of the World with this ambitious global campaign, the New 7 Wonders of the World.
The key difference is that, this time around, they will not be chosen by one man, but rather by millions of people all over the world.

The new wonders that are selected will be the people’s choices, and they will be drawn from the earliest time that humankind walked upon the earth up through the year 2000.

It is, therefore, possible that the only survivor of the original 7 Wonders of the World, the Pyramids at Giza, could be chosen for a second time, taking them well into a third millenium of fame!

Nightshade

so yes its not acase of them being the new 7 woners they will be THE seven wonders... and the old ones will have become the Ancient seven wonders of the world....now thats sad..and WHY cant the Pyramids be on that list  Theyve lasted and have fasinated people for thousands of years....

:D

In retrospect I should have included the pyramids in my vote. I don't know what I would have dropped out. Sorry Night.

Niamh

but they didnt give the option for the pyramids. it was like the were excmept from the poll. So we could vote for them. They really should be included though.
Cheers Papaya... i hadnt realise the list had been comprised so long ago!

A few years ago, some people in China proposed that in order to protect it. the Great Wall should be covered with tiles. If they had done this, I think, the Great Wall would be surely one of the NEW 7 wonders.

Interesting selections. I guess about half of my choices made it.

Just a question. Why did the organization copitulate to Egypt? From the article:

The pyramids of Giza, the only surviving structures from the original seven wonders of the ancient world, were assured of retaining their status in addition to the new seven after indignant Egyptian officials said it was a disgrace they had to compete.

I mean I agree that the pyramids are an icredible achievement, but what if all the losers complained and were indignant that their monument didn't make it? Afterall, the wonder in the voting from my city didn't make it.

Let me get something straight here...are the pyramids out of the competition...I mean you don't have to vote for them, cuz they're already reserving thier status or what? I don't get this point.

I would suggest Christ Redeemer, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. I like this place very much. It is one of the symbolic representations for Christian. I must say thanks to creator of this Jesus French sculptor Paul Landowski. The statue looks like Jesus receiving the people with open arms.
