This is just something that has been annoying me for a while and, on reflection, is one of the reasons I don't post here all that often. Why do you have that horrible big section full of authors' names with subforums relevant to them? On looking, the majority of them have struggled to get more than a couple of posts. Some haven't even had any attention ever. Why not just scrap that ugly area and just have a simple forum called Author Discusssion? That way, all authors can be discussed as and when people want to talk about them, rather than having set topics that nobody cares about.

You can collapse that section by clicking this icon http://www.online-literature.com/forums/images/buttons/collapse_tcat.gif

I know that. But it doesn't address my question. What purpose does an hugely inactive area serve?

It provides content for the main site. Any post there is published on the main site under the author or book area. To accomplish this it is necessary to have a subforum for each author or book. And yes, as logos said, you can collapse it, so you do not have to look at it if you do not want to.

However, the main site is viewed by 10x more people than the forum, so posting in there when you have a question/comment about a specific author or book will get you the maximum amount of views.
