Welcome, Chloey -- don't worry, there's plenty of people here whose first language isn't English. You'll pick it up fast, I'm sure.

A very warm welcome to the forum, Chloey! What part of China are you from? I have (many) Chinese friends, and I've been to Hong Kong and Macau...I would love to explore more of China. I studied traditional Chinese history at uni this year and loved it...if only Chinese was as easy to learn as English! But it's such a complex language...I wish I could read some of Chinese poetry in the originals, like the Tao Te Ching or some of Li Po's...they're already so beautiful in translation, they must be really amazing in their original glory.

Anyway, I'm sorry about the ramble, it's currently very late over where I am (Australia), and I tend to think straight onto the keyboard at this time of night. Welcome once more to the forum, I trust you will enjoy it here as well as in the UK.

By the way, from what I've seen of your written English, it's equally good to that of many of my Anglo-Saxon Australian friends!

Woohoo! Charlotte Bronte! Jane Eyre is one of the few adult classics worthy of a spot on my crowded bedside shelf (children's lit is my specialty). I've heard a lot about how overdone it is... I always want to say, "Yeah? What's your point?" I like them that way! ^_^

Equally good? Shoot, your English is better than that of 60% of the native English writing population I find online. 9_9 Don't worry. This is an awesome place--I've only been here a few days myself and I can already tell!!

I have just seen your reply, sorry for being delay in responding...I am very busy with my assignment at uni, I am so surprised to know that you love chinese literature...I myself love chinese peoms and asked my mum this morning to send them to England...coz I miss them so much...I have seen the translations of chinese poems, but it's very hard for me to understand...poets like Li Po and Du fu (I guess you have already heard his name, coz he is equally as famours as Li po) , they use old Chinese to write, so I also need to learn many things...Oh I am so happy, actually I was a little bit depressed this morning because of the weather!!!!

Hi miss tenderness,
Her name is Lin huiyin, she was famous because she was loved by a great poet whose name is Xu zhimo. They met each other in London, when she was 16 years old, they spent lots of time together talking about poetry and literature, then he fell in love with her, but she married to Liang sicheng, the son of Xu zhimo's teacher... well, I must not go too far:blush:

i concur. i don't think it's even grammatically correct to say huan ying + a place. then again, chinese isn't my native language, so i wouldn't hold my breath.

Wouldn't surprise me. The exchange students at my college have only managed to hammer about four words into me.

Exactly! Fairy tales! I LOVE fairy tales! The Little Mermaid is too sad for me... :bawling: I'm in love with "Beauty and the Beast," all variations. I do like Madame Leprince de Beaumont's version a lot. It's a theme that never fails to tug at my heartstrings. ^_^

So many books, so little shelving, isn't that always the story? I have to very 'specially select the book or two that I want more than anything else in the world and drop wide hints for Christmas. My mom gets soft around that time of year. :D

I have a bad feeling that my delay in responding was a good deal longer than yours; strangely enough, it was for the same reason - lots of assignments at uni. I didn't check back here until just now...sorry about that!

I have certainly heard of Du Fu, in fact I studied him (unfortunately only briefly) for my Chinese history course in first semester. Very beautiful poetry. :) Would you recommend any particular English translations of your favourite Chinese poetry?

How do you like England? I've only been there once when I was little and I don't remember it...It must be quite different from China, though. What part of England are you in? :)

wow!!! i didnt know so many people studied chinese on this forum! This is my second year studying it(by choice) and i love it! I seek practice everywhere i go and akm getting an immense thrill from learning a new language, especially one so difficult. I really want to pursue it too, it seems like a really worthwhile, even if hard, journey.

We'll not understand English until we understand language as a whole. So I, like you, am studying the other end of the spectrum by choice.

Hey there Chloey! Thanks to McJollySo for taking this thread up, I have encountered it. You joined just 3 days after I did...I wish to see you 'round here! Don't be afraid to talk in English. It's a WHOLE WORLD here, different people from different parts of the world, native English speakers and not (I'm not, although we grew up speaking the language). Explore! :)

Welcome to LitNet....:)
