View Full Version : Why did you choose your name?
Eufrosyne
11-05-2006, 06:16 AM
As the title says, what did you think when you chose your name? And your avatar and signature? It's always very interesting to know, it says alot about a person (sometimes, anyhow).
For me, Eufrosyne is the name of a grecian godess. She's the godess of giving or something like that (I forgot..) Anyway, she is one of three godesses of happiness!
Now im not sure if this thread has been up before... If so, forgive me!

Childhood concern with Robin Hood that has stuck. The 3000 was appended when I tried to pick "RobinHood" as a username for something and found it was taken.

Laindessiel
11-05-2006, 09:01 AM
Yes, Miss Dream, bad things are unacceptable but I think whoppers (even huge ones) are okay. They complete what it is that you're missing in you. :p
As for me, Laindessiel because it's the Elven equivalent of my real name (it does sound very girly) and next to my real name, it's my favorite one. I also use the the Elven name of my crush whenever I am trying to conceal a little "some-some" from him...
My original avatar I already changed for I thought that I was being really uncreative and unimaginative compared to the others'. The new one is an abstract painting of seashells. It doesn't hold anything for me, I was just looking for an image in black and white. I know that art doesn't have to sound academic to make an impact in the life of an ordinary person so I feel that I don't have to interpret it in an artistic way. (And, yeah, like I could.)
Being "A LOST REALIST" comes to me at a time when everything is all garbled up and doesn't make a modicum of sense. And that "phrase of a realization" was realized when I heard Trapt sing it for me.
And the signature? It wasn't hard for me to find one. Lord Henry Wotton has been not only an eye-opener for me, but a mind-opener as well. Everytime he opens his mouth, it's like kablam. He is the perfect distraction to a worthless braggart. :thumbs_up
Themis
11-05-2006, 09:27 AM
I chose that name because I am a law student. (Themis is the greek equivalent to the roman Justitia and the goddess of the law.)
And because I grew tired of another username I tended to take a while ago.
kilted exile
11-05-2006, 09:52 AM
I am kilted exile, because I am Scottish but living outside the country. The "do you feel lucky" dates to when I had a pic of me with my PB gun as the avatar, and is of course stolen from the Dirty Harry film.
Idril
11-05-2006, 10:43 AM
Idril is a character from The Silmarillion, to put her in LOTR terms which most of you are more familiar with, she is Elrond's paternal grandmother. She's an Elven Princess, although that's really beside the point for me because I've always preferred the Men to the Elves and, interestingly enough, that is a trait Idril and I share, she married a Human man, not an elf. The thing about Idril that I've always loved is that she is known for her beautiful feet and so am I ;) :p and she always walks around unshod and so do I, unless required by law...or weather, to do otherwise. The Barefoot Prairie Goddess thing is, of course, a reference to Idril's and mine love of being barefoot, the prairie thing is because I grew up on the prairie and it's where I feel most at home and the goddess thing is because I had princess first, but I'm not a princess, nor am I a maiden, which was my next try...I thought Goddess had a little more "wink, wink", self-deprecating humour in it so I finally settled on that. And the avatar is Idril's emblem, created by Tolkien himself.

My friend has a helper dog named Higley, and it's just the sweetest thing. Higley has a funny sound to it and it makes me think of a million different things.
Shalot
11-05-2006, 10:02 PM
I chose the name Shalot in honor of the poem "The Lady of Shalott" by Tennyson. I spelled it wrong though.
This was one my favorite poems back in the day when I was a student. I wrote several papers on it. The first time I read the poem was in an introductory literature class and the professor died during the semester.

You mean you're not named after onions?
cuppajoe_9
11-06-2006, 01:59 AM
The name is taken from a line in the animated version of James and the Giant Peach. Just before falling asleep at the helm, the Centipede mutters "I need a cup of coffee, a cuppajoe...". It fit in nicely with a former user name, Joe4647, chosen for its anonymity. I am also a big fan of hot caffinated beverages. The 9 doesn't mean anything, except that there are apparently at least 8 more cuppajoes out there on the ether. I've only ever heard from one other. He programs computer games for a living.
The avatar is one of the few pictures of me that I can look at without wincing. It was taken by a friend of mine at the last Calgray Folk Music Festival, which, by the way, was amazing. I aged it in Photoshop to make it look more like I am the leader of some sort of underground political movement.
The signature is dog latin for 'don't let the bastards grind you down'. It's from The Handmaids Tale by Margaret Atwood (a distant relation of mine, incidentally). I haven't read the book, though, I took the signature in honour of my friend Sarah who has moved away for university, is feeling quite homesick and lonely, and who taught me the phrase.
kathycf
11-06-2006, 02:06 AM
Kathy: Kathleen (I should have gone with Kat, like I usually do)
CF: middle and last name initials. Yep, I am very very "creative" when thinking up user names...this is my name on like 3 other forums.
I like Bierce and Wodehouse as writers, but I also like to change my quotes around a lot as well as my avatar. "girly geek' can be blamed on Robinhood 3000 for something he wrote in the guys only thead...:p
OZEED
11-06-2006, 04:41 AM
Ozeed: Deezo backward, which is the nick name that friends call me. They kinda add an "o" to the end of all our names eg. Craig'o, Nash'o, Marc'o.
The first quote keeps me grounded that I am on a journey of learning and you certainly learn everyday.
The second is from a speech by christian apologist and author Dr Ravi Zacharias during his address at a UN breakfast.
Pendragon
11-06-2006, 04:35 PM
My usual online names of Blade and Raven were already taken on this forum. David Pendragon is a character I created as the last son of Camelot, raised in Avalon by his elven mother to quest for Excaliber against the wishes of Morgan le Fey. So I took Pendragon, sometimes using a dragon, sometimes a knight, sometimes something form the Arthur Legends. My current signature is something I love from an excellent poet. "Out of Many, One" expresses the fact that I have so many characters who are obviously myself, but each is different.
I simply used my first name. There aren't that many of us Vilis around in the world, so it is a) usually available, and b) almost unique. Moreover, my brain is not made for names and I have enough problems remembering what I should call my friends, so having an alias would certainly be an added trouble. After all, I'd like to recognize it when I am being talked about. ;)
One might, of course, be concerned about one's privacy, but I'm not really.

tainaprincess
11-07-2006, 09:11 AM
I chose tainaprincess because I'm from Puerto Rico, and the native americans when the Spaniards came were called Tainos, and the princess part......well, that's a fantasy of mine :) I'm the Ruler of Strawberryland because I love Strawberry Shortcake, and couldn't find any pics that I would like to use of a taina. My quote is from my favorite literature book, Pride and Prejudice, which I had found extremely difficult to get into the first time I read it, but after I was able to read it through once, I became addicted to it, and have read it at least 15 times since then (back when I was a lowly sophomore in high school, and I am currently a senior in college), and I've a feeling that I will be reading it again before my school career is over.....

Vada Dagon
11-08-2006, 10:03 AM
Well My name is not Vada Dagon but it is the name of a Character that I created for a Science Fiction Space Opera short story.
Anyway, I like the name and I've made it my Alter Ego. Hence I've used it play role games as well as a username here.
Grand Nagus.... Uhmm while I am not a Trekkie I that it would be funny to put the Grand Nagus under the name. I didn't particularly like this character but all the silly rules of acquisition were so dumb they made me laugh.
As for my signature (Eheem.. ) which I just added is from William Butler Yeats his poem The Lake Isle of Innisfree. My most favorite poem actually the only poem I really like.
Bluebiird
11-08-2006, 11:59 AM
It's a strange way to get a username but I got mine during a discussion with a slightly insane friend of mine, who prefered to be called by a nickname (For the sake of his privacy, and my skin, I won't tell you what it is) when ever I emailed him. He wasn't very pleased when I said his real name. So, when I agreed to refer to him by his nickname, he asked if there was a nickname I'd prefer to be called by.
I've had many previous usernames for things but I couldn't see any being suitable at the time.
It was about that time that I'd downloaded a game from a website called Big Fish Games, or something like that, and their logo was a green fish. I don't know how or why I made the connection, but I thought of bluebird. Seeing as my favourite colour is blue and I like birds, it fitted.
Eventually, he got out of that silly little nickname thing and the name lay dormant for a year or so.
Then, about two years ago, when I was retaking some GCSE's, I opted for GNVQ ICT. And I thought, "It'd be much easier if I could email myself school work" (seeing as I didn't have hotmail then).
So, I got a hotmail account. I was stuck for a suitable name though. Then I remembered Bluebird. So, I tried that, but the name was already taken. So, I added a number to it. Only, when I typed it in I made a spelling mistake and accidentally put in two I's. Unable to change it, I decided to live with it, I though it was kind of catchy anyway.
But, after that, I discovered that hotmail was blocked at school, but Yahoo wasn't. So I got a yahoo account with the same name.
Now I have hotmail for filtering junk mail and yahoo for school work.
After that, the name Bluebiird just stuck in my mind, and everything I've become a member of since has been Bluebiird something or other.
My quote is from the back of my Dragonology book. I figured it sounded professional and it was to do with dragons, my favourite creature.
My avatar was from a silly little picture I played around with at school. I looked up dragon ornaments (from the Franklin Mint I think) and played around with some of the tools on photoshop. This picture was actually a mirror, if I remember correctly. When I joined online-lit. I just cut out the head of the dragon and used it. I'm kind of attatched to it now, so I doubt I'll change it.
So, that's me Bluebiird :D
Vada Dagon
11-08-2006, 03:16 PM
That's a neat story Blue Biird.
Certainly more entretaining than mine.
Granted I created mine for a character but it didn't just come out one day. I was playing with Draco but then that was too close to Draco Malfoy and I didn't like that so I was just going to use Dragon but again it was too obvious what it meant.
Hence I decided to use Dragon but drop the r and ended up with Dagon with I actually ended up liking a great deal. Originally I was going to use Dagon as a first name but I couldn't come up with a Cool last name. I get stupid names and no one of them would be as strong as Dagon so the whole name would seem wimpy.
Dagon Smith or Dagon Hascon and all that other stuff just seemed to fizzle out the power of the name Dagon. So I decided to make it a last name and I started looking around for intersting first names. I came up on a name that I just fell in love with which actually was Valda. It's like a Check, Russian or something. Anyway, I thought that was awsome name. So I originally used Valda Dagon as a name and it was cool.
Then someone read it and they thought Valda was a girls name. I was like what? No way, I argued asked a few people some seemed confused. I was angry, mad, how can my ultimate gentle hero with a strong name have a girl's first name.
I suppose it could be like that song who name his son susie.
Anyway, I ended up dropping the l obviously and got the finish name of
Vada Dagon. Occassionally I still use Valda I really like that name, in fact I don't have a middle name and I am thinking of making that my middle name.
Except I have a stupid common first name (way too common and extreemly English) and a common Spanish Last name. Valda would just seem like it's forced and really I am not ready to drop my last name. I'd have to change all kinds of stuff and for the love of everything I just couldn't change my last name. It's my heritage afterall.
Anyway, that's the entire story of my username.
Lake Isle of Innisfree is the poem from William Butler Yeats and the first time that I read it six years ago I just fell in love with that Poem. It's just a place I like to go, the Lake Isle of Innisfree. The passage I quote is the middle stanza of the poem.

Johnson's "General History of the Pyrates," chapter on Bartholomew Roberts, two pirates put false names on a document, one of the false names being Aaron Whifflingpin. I suspect that it means something rude, but I've no idea what.
My avatar is a bit of a photograph I took from an aeroplane window; dawn as seen in the thingyspere.
Sig is from Longfellow's poem, "A Dutch Picture." It fits at many levels, like I'm on line when I should be washing up; washing up when I should be reliving the adventures of my youth? reliving the adventures of my youth when I should be saving the world? saving this world when I should be preparing for the next? Whatever - you decide.

Oh and my custom user title "Hoodoo Hexed" comes from my belief that I must be hexed or that I have amassed a lot of bad kharma because I can't seem to stop myself from saying and doing stupid, embarrasing things. And the bad part is that while I am saying or doing the stupid things, I pretty much know it -- I just can't stop. It's like I've been cursed or hypnotized or something. So that is why I am Hoodoo Hexed. Anybody believe in spells or hoodoo?

Oh, and the profile picture (That I've just added) is "An artist's concept chronicles the star being ripped apart and swallowed by a black hole over time. First, the intact sun-like star (left) ventures too close to the black hole, and its own self-gravity is overwhelmed by the black hole's gravity. The star then stretches apart (middle yellow) and eventually breaks into stellar crumbs, some of which swirl into the black hole (at right)." Taken from Yahoo images. It's not a picture of me, I know, but I don't like any pictures of me, I liked this one instead :D.
Serenata
12-07-2006, 12:37 PM
I chose Serenata because it means Serenade in......Latin, I believe. Or maybe it's Italian. Anyways, I chose it because I am a singer and because it sounded pretty. My avatar is a sugar glider and I chose it because I have two as pets. Polly and Anna. My signature about the spoon and the cereal bowl was written when I was having a bad day. I traced the source of my bad day to that morning at breakfast.

I chose Mortis Anarchy because one, I was in my whole 'Dark, Poe, Life Sucks and this is pretty cool sounding word that will enhance my feeling of being an artist' or something crazy like that. And Anarchy because it has my name in it and again, the whole phase thing. I would probably change it...can you?

cant recall how exactly i picked up the idea for this nick, but i loved the way the word 'symphony' sounds, plus i love and worship music, so i thought-what better word to use as an identity! :) . from then on, wherever on web i flew, i registered this nick as mine! (i remember, when putting up a blog in the opera community, this nick wasnt available, but i wont take anything else as a username so i went for 'symphonied' instead! :p ) and so far i believe i'm going to keep this nick everywhere for all time to come! so that wherever u see this name u'll know for sure that its me!!
as for the avatar and signature, i love dark horses + i had this pic in my pc so i just put it up for the moment, though i think i'm going to change this avatar soon, may be to something more....dunno-what!
i keep changing my signature to current favourite quotes and bits and pices from poems i like....
Lily Adams
06-18-2007, 03:06 AM
Well, Lily is a nice girl's name that can be pronounced easily and it's not too common. John Adams is one of my heroes, so that's where I got "Adams." Plus it's just a cool last name.
As for my avatar and signature, I seem to change it much more often then everyone else here. 0_0 Oh well. But this isn't about how often you change your avatar and signature.

Haven
06-18-2007, 03:58 PM
When I was invited to join Lit/Net it was from another site, rather different in it's motivation. A gaming forum, which I enjoy in a different way, very much, and have made good friends there.
My avatar [on the gaming site] is entirely female and when I came to Lit/Net I was unsure of the community and the gender responses. Therefore, I decided to try to play gender neutral. I chose to be 'Haven' and my avatar was a Unicorn; has to be said a bit of a stallion :D ... This was done with hindsight/forethought. I wanted to see what it would be like to be, sexually ambiguous. I had come up against a little male discrimination on the other site, nothing to actually be disturbing, but enough to make me wonder what it would be like to be considered male on a forum. So for a time I felt quite happy to be neither sex. Can't say I was totally convincing.
Nonetheless, nature outs and in quoting Jack Lemmon, in Some Like it Hot "I'm a girl, I'm a girl!!! And to be absolutely honest, I love being a woman. So I imported [with a little editing] my mermaid, Avane, which is not such a stretch from being Haven. If I get the time, I am considering making my own avatar. But that is the story to date.
I've read everyone's posts and it makes for interesting reading: either really straight forward or more convoluted reasoning... But the great things about forums is that you can recreate yourself. Sure you get born, your parents name you, they bring you up and that's that...well not anymore. :D :D :D :thumbs_up

Tabula rasa.. literally meaning a blank slate in Latin.. is basically the concept that the human mind is blank at the time of birth and it is only through its observation and experience of the world around it.. that it gains any knowlegde of it... The idea goes back to the works of Aristotle and was later revived... by the likes of St.Thomas Aquinas and Sigmund Freud... Moreover, it stands as a contrast to the Platonic view which believe in the pre-existence of human mind...
Tabula rasa.. is my current state of mind... the grounds of which are clear as daylight yet I cannot comprehend them.. for it gets comical... amusing in a cynical way perhaps... by the time I reach what seems like an end to it... and thus begins a consistent gazing into the blankness of a non-existent surface... through which the culmination of all life's desires could be obtained...
...and so I continue gazing.
Tabula rasa... for I believe in it.
My title "Skydancer" is a cigarette brand... apt for my bony frame! ...also i believe air could be titled as skydancer... and to someone who has been known among her friends as "lighter than air" :) it fits well...

RoCKiTcZa: coz I'm a Rockista (or a rocker, as we call it). I interchanged the 't' and 's' and changed 'S' into 'cZ' in order to emphasize my nickname - Kit - and the name under which most of my teachers would call me in school and in other "formality events" - Cza - short for Czarielle, my real name and more unique variation of Czarina ;)
My title, Vintage Rock Guru, is a title I bestow unto myself - I am indeed a rocker, but inside my heart there dwells a passion for everything vintage and the times that came before me. Meanwhile, my avatar (as of now) is a picture of a schweeeeeet little girl of the 1990s and I believe she rocks by simply being herself...

The 'heart' came from a bit of a play on my actual name, and the 'lioness' because I was looking around the room when I was deciding and my gaze came upon Tamora Pierce's Song of the Lioness. I decided that it went quite well together, since that's how I feel inside; externally, I'm quite shy and quiet, but what people don't see is the depth of my emotions and experiences. So that's what I decided.
My avatar is just a picture of one of my apple trees. Just because I like it, and think it represents me quite well.

I try to choose a name that I think is right for the forum. Now, don't think I am a forum junkie with 10 different names lol, I am currently on three forums. I chose Haven for here because I was told by my good friend Kathy [hello, calling Kathy... missing you :(] that this was a nice site full of nice people, and she is right. So, this is my haven :) . On the other two forums my name is Avane. I like that name too, very much ,because, for me, it reflects the forums' content and my presence on it. I am so happy that Haven has found her place on Lit, it is a great place. :) Thank you all for making me feel so welcome.

On the other two forums my name is Avane. I like that name too, very much ,because, for me, it reflects the forums' content and my presence on it. I am so happy that Haven has found her place on Lit, it is a great place. :) Thank you all for making me feel so welcome.
Oh are you a friend of kathycf???
I wonder myself where she is now a days!

Hi Pensive and Bluesky and also Kiz_Paws, who mentioned her concern in a PM; and no doubt other Lit members...
We are all hoping Kathy comes back soon. Have been PM'g her saying she is missed... and that we hope all is well. Fingers crossed. I am sure she will turn up

*miffed* Oh well. I'm bulletproofdork because . . .
I saw the name on another website, and I thought it was hilarious. But now it has lost some of its novelty. :(

i had none, I had to make a username, and I couldn't decide (not surprising) so I went to a username generator and I got this...I'm sort stuck with this i guess...
My username often reminds people of Finding Nemo. However, I chose it because, at the time I chose it, I thought dwarves were awesome (especially those from The Hobbit). Dori is actually the name of one of the dwarves in the book The Hobbit (J.R.R. Tolkien). It was short and largely unused on many forums, so I adopted it as my online name.

I chose it because I love Russian names.
