Books? Books? Did somebody say BOOKS?? Wheeeeee!!!

..Uh-huh. Yeah, I'm 'SummerSolstice' (you can call me Solstice, OR Summer. I also answer to Sol... or Sum, you know, but that's kind of wierd). I am perhaps one of the first twelve-year-olds to be admitted to college... but don't tell them that. They think I'm eighteen. *puts finger in front of mouth and nods solemnly*

I am a word geek, for starters. Anything and everything that relates to words or language is my ardent enthusiasm, and that includes grammar. Yes, I'm one of those twitchy, red-ink crazies who froth at the mouth if you use "literally" to mean "figuratively," "they" as a singular pronoun, or don't put a question mark at the end of a rhetorical question. I'll try to froth calmly and politely, though.

Besides all that, something that might distinguish me among these zillions of other book lovers is my love for children's lit, specifically. I devour both classic and modern, although not as much of the latter as I'd like. I have a picture of a Newbery medal taped to the laptop where I write my stories--I aspire to write for the upper elementary/middle school crowd. Gail Carson Levine is my idol.

Well, that's enough ranting for now... I've got to save some of it, after all. ^_^ So awesome to be here, y'all!

Summer. You sound like you should be a regular here. Welcome.

Summer solstice I believe is June 21 or 22, depending on something.

Big, warm welcome to you Summer. :D

Yes, I'm one of those twitchy, red-ink crazies who froth at the mouth if you use . . . "they" as a singular pronoun . . .

I prefer to follow in the steps of Shakespeare and Thackeray, at any rate, and I hope you don't froth too much. ;)

How do you handle this singular pronoun situation, anyway?

... it's like I say to my Mom--nobody ever has to worry about being a dork as long as you know where to find the people who are as dorky as you! ^_^
haha! I like that! :D and while I won't speak for others, I fully admit to my dorki-ness and encourage you to embrace yours here

Thanks, you guys! My veins run with printer's ink and it'll be so awesome to get to know people who share my all-devouring passion for the written word.

SleepyWitch, as for me being cool, it's like I say to my Mom--nobody ever has to worry about being a dork as long as you know where to find the people who are as dorky as you! ^_^

ShoutGrace, my approach (as I couldn't help saying in a discussion on this topic elsewhere) is to arm-twist my subject into being plural (pluralism?) so that I can use they, and just use "one" if a plural isn't possible. At least, that's my approach now... It used to be "Hang political correctness! Let the stinkin' feminists tear out their hair! I'm gonna say "chairman" and "mankind" and use "he" as a generic singular personal pronoun as much as I dagnabbit well want to!"

...Yeah, I have a lot of rants. Feminism--especially in language, since that's what I consider all this "s/he" junk--is one of them. If you're bored you can poke me with that particular stick some time, but it's not my fault if you lose a finger. :P

Wow, you don't sound like an eighteen year old. You sound like you're ten years older. Good for you. ;)
