I think that the "royal we" has something to do with it. As my forefathers belonged to Lucknow (A place famous for its dukes and nawabs.), my grandmother calls herself "we" and "us." I used to get so very astonished by it in my childhood, but then when I read Lucknow's history, I was no longer surprised. And as my younger cousin lives with my grandmother, she has also started calling herself "we."

Once, I asked her jokingly, "So why do you call yourself we?"
She looked at me with confusion and said, "We are we."

Here, it is the opposite. People find those rude who call themselves "we." They think that those people think too highly of themselves.

Personally, I don't have any problem with it now. It is just another way of speaking. :D
