I saw, not with your eyes; but I too was there
On the day you wore his end as your own despair.
Two died that day; each chose his or her fate.
Somehow I knew we'd end too, so I did wait.
You'd tried in the past to give up on our love,
To spit on our happiness, to give fate a shove.
I dared to say "no way" as I fought for us,
But you were determined never again to trust.
Or was it was your plan all along to kill bliss
With each heartless promise and every false kiss?

In your world of opposites, happiness is gloom;
Love is destruction; and hope is sweet doom.
Yes, I promised to help you, emotions aside;
But you pushed me away, choosing not to confide.
What choice did I have but to despair for us
When you chid me with words that like daggers you thrust
While I turned the proverbial cheek every time.
You tell me which of us performed the worst crime.
It was like this from the start, but you refuse to see
That the destruction of us stemmed from you, dear, not me.

And now that your cruel game is over, I'll say
That the last die was cast on a hot August day.

NOTE: "His end" refers to a stranger's suicide that took place in the parking lot of my ex-girlfriend's condo complex. He totaled my car, which was parked about three spaces from the road from which he entered. Long story short: he shot himself, and my ex-girlfriend was the only eyewitness to the suicide. She suffers from borderline personality disorder and generalized anxiety disorder; so the tragedy traumatized her more, I suppose, than it would have most people. Even so, when I tried to console and help her, she not only pushed me away but also verbally abused me over and over. She had insulted me thus on several occasions in the past, but the abuse intensified after the tragedy. For her sake, I did my best to overlook the insults and deliberate attempts to shut me out; however, a month later, she ended our relationship via e-mail a month after the incident. Nice. Anyhoo, there's the background info.
