View Full Version : Not a poem, just a moment...

But as there isn't a forum for "moments," I guess I'll post it here:
We shiver in the December night.
My little one and I,
Bundled under sleeping bags,
Gaze up at the stars.
“There’s the Little Dipper!”
She cries with excitement.
“And those stars make a Christmas tree!”
Then, in a heartbeat, it happens --
A yellow streak in the purple sky
sailing over the black shadows of the foothills.
She’s silent and forgets the cold.
Her mouth goes slack in wonder.
Her eyes grow large.
Her first shooting star.
“I forgot to make a wish!”
She realizes, slightly disappointed.
I think one of mine just came true.

Good poem.
Where do you people live that you've never seen a shooting star?

i am at a loss for words, the last three lines brought a twisting pain my chest where my heart resides. that is so amazingly beautiful. I would consider it a poem .

i live in Australia, lots of wide open spaces, etc, but I live in the city, and no matter how common shooting stars are in the country, I've still never seen one. :( :( i'd like to know how on earth you see shooting stars in LA?? where are you Jonus, that they're that common?

Thanks to everyone who shared my moment with me.
Fayefaye, even out here in the suburbs of LA shooting stars can be seen, if you know when to look. There are two major meteor showers annually, one in August and one in November. The one we were watching a couple of weeks ago is called Geminids, which is a smaller shower, but known for its the bright yellow tails. (In Leonides, for instance, the tails tend to oranges, reds, and greens). During these showers even in the suburbs you can see several shooting stars in one night. I have to think that if you got out of the urban areas of Australia, it would be much like the Arizona desert where anything less than 60 or 70 shooting stars a night is unheard of. Get thee to the Outback, Fayefaye! But watch out for anything that moves! It might be Steve Irwin! (ooh! Scary!)

Lol!!! Thanks for the advice, ihrocks. And Steve Irwin is definately the scariest thing in the outback. I've seen snakes and deadly spiders in the wild, and he scares me more than them. I'm so jealous of you though. Meteor showers? :( :( :( I don't think I've ever heard of there being any around here. The Outback's a little too isolated for my liking... Maybe one day. ;) Still, even when I go to the country, I don't end up looking at stars as much as I'd like... I can't believe you can see meteor showers in LA! I think even in the Outback you'd probably only see a couple, maybe, if you hung out all night with the mosquitoes sucking you dry... So LA isn't the urban jungle people make it out to be? I remember hearing once that the whole of Australia (pop 20mil) couldn't populate California.

Well I used to live in a rural area of Ohio. Now I live in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I've seen a few shooting stars just since I've been here. My wife and I were driving here from Ohio last year and we came to this little town called Bard, NM. The stars there were amazing. There were millions more than you ususally see from anywhere I've ever lived. My wife and I pulled the car over at like 2 in the morning and sat on the hood and looked at the stars for about an hour....... What a wonderful experience.
