Hey I was thinking, why don't we create a yahoo chess club, we could play chess against eachother on a given day, and maybe have a private room, I don't know if its possible, but any takers?

If you let me win once in a while... and time zones allowing, could be fun.
Though... nah, I don't enjoy winning anyway. Usually that is :p

Good idea, Stanislaw. I will join, so long as the events do not conflict with my present schedule (nursing school).

Can't we just create a Yahoo litteratti club ;) ???

Stanislaw

I am not exactly sure how we can set up our own room, however we can create our own group. The email chess may not be a bad idea either, if one can't make it to the event.

What would be a good day/time?? :thumbs_up

Miss Darcy
04-18-2005, 10:21 PM
I'd play. I used to be really into chess...I go on and off it...right now I'm actually horridly rusty...

But why Yahoo chess, MSN Zone chess is much better (from the experience I've had of it)...but then again you can't start your own...or maybe your can...you can actually start a tournament, if you'd like that...yeah...*drifts off*

Well if anyone'd like to have a look at the MSN thing, it's http://zone.msn.com/chess - I used to spend a lot of time on it...playing, chatting, and ASL'ing. :D But I'd be fine with Yahoo if it were necessary.

As long it fits with my time zone. I don't want to have to get up in the middle of the night for it. ;)

Darcy.

I used to play, I even taught my little brother how, but I'm sure by now with the length of time I haven't played that I would suck. I've been playing "Othello" with my boyfriend for a few months now, its a nice substitute since he thinks chess is for dorks (working on that) :p

I like to play chess; I can't say I'm any good at it though. Mostly I've just played my dad and uncle. Sometimes I do better, mostly not x) But they're pretty good. I love fancy chess sets, with crazy carved figures, and have always wanted to buy one.

Ah, how funny to see so many closet chess aficionados here. I am something of a chess addict, have played lots of blitz, and regularly attended 4 chess clubs (that was until school re-reared it's ugly head, and I got addicted to these forums).

Are you often on that chess site, mir? Would anyone else like to join? :)

The best website is ICC, Internet Chess Club. All the GM's play on that site, and it has the best features. Recently they took away their guest privileges, however, so if you want to experience this chess heaven you need to pay a minimal annual fee.

If anybody wants to quickly improve their chess monumentally, study tactics for 10 to 20 minutes a day (ideally for as long as you can, actually). Chess is 99% tactics! Even if you can't solve the problems at first, explore the explanations and study the outcome; it's the best thing for any chess player. Tactics, tactics, tactics!

For variety, my favorite thing to do is set up a board and play through, say, the 100 greatest games of chess ever played, 1 at a time, of course (as one game usually takes me a few hours). Each of which will feature loads of tactics, not incidentally. If you get an annotated, in depth analysis version, you will understand chess much better, and have fun too (if you're into it at all).

That is assuming you know how the pieces move, if this is not so, study piece movement first. :D

Playing, or losing? Losing is the key word. Not like the kid in "Searching for Bobby Fisher," I can only think maybe 3 moves ahead, if even that.

Now you're talking. I'm an eager chess player. A very fascinating game indeed. I like it because each game is different from each other. The initial position can lead to countless positions and complex thought processes.

A tournament sounds like a mighty good idea. Does anybody know if clubs can organize tournaments at Gameknot?

Sounds cool Turk. I used to play, though also not great. It takes a lot of effort and constant playing to be good. I used to be on my high school team, but once you get to college the time is just not there for chess and studies. Do I have to join gameknot? There's no way to do it on lit net?

mir
10-28-2006, 05:02 PM
yay!! people are joining gameknot!!! :D

i don't have many games going right now so i'll challenge you all! it's a really fun place - my name there is MirN if anyone wants to play me. :)

Gameknot is pretty informal, Virgil, and each person has a rating that changes depending on the amount of games they win or lose, so you can choose to play people at your skill level. i think it's something totally seperate from LitNet - i got on it because the same friend who recommended me to LitNet recommended gamknot, actually :) - but it's still a really fun thing to do when you want to think and relax at the same time.

thevintagepiper

There is a way to do it on lit-net, Virgil...I played correspondence chess for a few months with a friend. You have a board set up with a graph and to move peices you say "1B to 3A" or some such thing. Then the person moves the piece and replies with their own move. I've heard of people playing by Christmas card before!!! That would be one long game. The disadvantage of that is having a board set up all the time, but you can probably do it on the computer as well.
My friend and I eventually gave up and played on some game master site. He whopped me twice in half an hour ;)

I play chess - but not all that good. And I don't have time to play in real time.

So if you are interested you can join "itsyourturn.com" and challenge user "DeepThought" :-)

And DeepThought is just an id to scare people - nothing to it :-)

I like to start a game of chess; I like to win, to finish. It's this business of the middle game that can drive me crazy.

Hyacinth42
05-02-2007, 06:50 PM
Hah, I have no end game, in fact, I have no strategy... But that is the fun part ;)

People with strategy get annoyed at my random moves and then make a simple mistake and then loose.... Although, I beat an asian dude, the president of a chess team, and then lost to a semi-retarded kid. So my strategy of no strategy does not always work very well. But it was still fun playing. I like chess, but not enough to play a lot, just randomly, like once a year, where I play 4 games or so that one time.

Bookworms, the thread started about role playing and you talk about chess, deteriorate the mind a little. THe only differences between an RPG and Reality is that the role playing game is more fun. Also you have to eat in reality.

Yes: chess ... 3 ways, three players.
Funny thing is this: it's so well designed that no rules need to be altered ... Beginners in Geometry only get a little dizzy with the M. C. Escher (see Wiki) looks of the design.

Genius work! :thumbs_up

too late Pashy~

[It's well designed, and rules don't change because it is made of squares. The only thing that changes is that a third player can join the fun. Movements of pieces are unaltered. They move exactly the same way. -- Yes: exactly. The board is different, that's all, but it doesn't alter the rules (pieces' movements, functions, values). It only gives a geometrical look to the game, only that. Looks like complicate, but, in fact, it's simpler than it .. looks.

Game begins normally with one player randomically chosen (stone-paper-scissors :D ), and it goes clockwise.

Too bad it wasn't me to make it up ... I'd like to have gotten rich ... ]

According to the rules, game ends when first check mate is given. But I've been discussing with a friend the possibility of the man who gives the first check mate to keep the adversary's army ... It might make sense.

Maybe the players might cast lots, to see who gets the army.

Third option would be the looser decides it.

Fourth best pieces go to winner, and pawns go to the other one.

Fifth, the army remains untouched, and other two players go on.

sixth, army is removed from the board ...

There may be (many) others :D

Wow, this looks complicated. Have you played Libri? Are there group dynamics involved, where two people may team up and defeat the third before squaring off against each other? I used to love chess. It just takes so much time to keep sharp that I don't have time for it any more.

Not yet, but I showed this to a friend of mine, he got quite interested ...

There's people who play in the computer, to get sharp. I like to play with myself. Intercalating with playing with other people, and trying their strategies, when I play with myself.

It's a wonderful pastime to be with friends! Tough thing to play with married friends, though ... It seems a wife takes all your time. Only, perhaps, if you get a friend who has a wife, so she can be chitchat'ring, while the guys play.

Or get a girl who likes to play. In certain couples, though, it seems not to quite work out ... I don't know, there's something about women & chess that I could not yet quite figure out what is ...

If you google it you'll find it easily. It seems to be "natural" (or ressurreceted) among the Czechs, but, nowadays, what can't you purchase in the internet?~

Nice to know that you play chess, KK .. Perhaps we might play, cause Jean showed some .. fear, through a week silence, by now!

women DON'T play chess

(at least, not at distances ...)

Sorry, Libri... I've been really busy, and I was away from the forum over the weekend. I've never played chess "from a distance" before, just in real life.

Just to clarify: women do play chess. They may not be as common as male chess-players, but they definitely, undeniably exist. :D

Yes, they do! :)

Judit Polgar, the youngest of the Polgar sisters, is also the strongest chess player of the three. She was #10 in the world or around there for quite a long time. The eldest of the three is Zsuzsa or Susan Polgar, who has been very active for most her life in chess, promoting it and especially encouraging girls to play. I met her once and also played her in a simul (simultaneous exhibition). To my deep chagrin, when I approached her, I said, "Judit?" My best friend was with me and he gave me flak for a while after. :) Probably one of the worst social blunders of my life. I am not worried about it too much now, as it was almost 6 years ago.

Anyway, Susan is a GM. Judit is what they call a Super GM. It's pretty hard for anyone under the level of say, International Master, to estimate the difference between GM and Super GM, and GM will completely blow anyone lower than master out of the water with complete ease. So yes, women and girls play chess.

To Libri; Not sure what you mean by "playing from a distance." Do you mean correspondence, perhaps?

Woo, chess! My "twin sister" and I used to play chess at lunch, and we had a couple extra rules of our own; it was fun! My dad and I probably have a 3:1 ratio going; he used to be an absolute whiz, and I still make way too many stupid mistakes . . . it can be fun, though, if everyone is in the right mood. Don't want any hurt feelings! =D

Let's go! :)

You choose your colour. I'll be nice.
(I should not. You'll probably win.)

Black or white?

If so I'd be interested in some friendly games on Yahoo.
