Let me start by saying that I have never had so much fun reading a book, and it is a very unfortunate business that 'The Tin Drum' is an often ignored classic. It has the flavor of perfect intellect and humor. I would highly recommend this work to anyone wishing to advance their German literature beyond 'Faust', 'Death in Venice', and 'Siddhartha'. It is probably the key piece of fiction in German literature after Mann. The only German work from roughly this time period, that I think could compete would be Boll's 'The Clown'. Both will definitely keep you entertained.

I'm reading The Tin Drum at the moment. I saw in the library a while ago and thought it looked interesting, so I took it out. I'm nowhere near finishing yet, but I'm enjoying it so far. It's surprisingly entertaining - I was expecting it to be a really challenging read, but it's not.

It is indeed a good read.
Somehow I think it's is only in USA and maybe France that it is an ignored classic. but anyway he really has got a way with words. even though I found it a bit long at certain times, it is surely worth reading.

The Tin Drum is certainly a brilliant, audacious, and hilarious novel. Having only recently finished art school at the time when I read this book, I could not help but roll with laughter at Oscar's stint as an art school model. I have read Böll's The Clown as well... but did not find it nearly as strong. I might also suggest Grass' Local Anesthetic and the brilliant play, The Physicists, by Friedrich Dürrenmatt.
