help with literary terminology

Hello All

I am currently involved in trasnlating some literary terminology into English. One particular word seems rather overlapping. I would provide a defenition and if any one can suggest the equivalant term i will be more than grateful: I need the word for adapting a worldwide piece of literature, like Pygmallion for instance and changing the names of places, characters..etc to make it fit for the particular culture adopting it. So if it is adopted by a chinese film maker for instance he would choose chines names, settings and perhaps change some events according to his own culture.

If you can help me find the appropriate word i will be more than grateful.

I don't believe that there is a single word for that, although "localization" is used for that process in technical writing. In literature "adaptation" is used in general cases of changing details for another market or medium. You might want to adapt "localization" to the usage that you have in mind.

If you are changing some characters and events also from the novel, then the new form is actually 'based on' the old form.

In context to film making, I have seen movies that say 'It is based-on a novel'

Which necessarily doesnt mean exact translation.

And 'adaptation' seems a more appropriate word.
