Hello everyone!
I'm having a little problem..and was hoping someone can help me out with it..
I'm having my culture course this term...and in it we study the medivel ages and all..
Anyways...today we had a lecture which included some information about the "New testament" and the "Old Testament"...
Honestly I didn't understand any of what was said about the two testaments...since i'm not a christian, don't have a background about it...
So now the point which I didn't get is...
How is the New Testament build on the Old Testament?
Because that's pretty much what I understood from all what he said...
Forgive me if I sound a little ignorant...but I seriously don't have any background about the Testament..
thanks in advance!

Hi, Nossa!

In Matthew 5:17, Jesus said:
Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.

So, to be very simple, the new testament is the fulfilment of the old testament, esp. in terms of prophecies, like the birth, the gospel, and the death of Jesus.

And to quote wikipedia:

All of these books (old statements) were written before the birth of Jesus of Nazareth, who is the subject of the subsequent Christian New Testament. The Bible of Jesus is the Old Testament, specifically according to Luke 24:44-49: "written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms ... the scriptures".

Note: words in bracket added by me

To get started, you can check out wikipedia first about these two parts of the Bible.

Or maybe you can just send PM to ShoutGrace :D

Thanks alot...I did check wikipedia last night and got to understand things about the New Testament...
The point is that...my professor totally lost me in this lecture...he was talking about the Israel offspring from Egypt to the desert and how this was some kinda "allegory" to give a hint or overshadow on the suffering of the Christ (PBUH) and his pains to deliver his message and give the man kinda Salvation.
That's pretty much what I don't get, why did they have to use allegory to talk about Jesus Christ, I mean they could've talked about him right away without the usage of allegory..
Am I making sense here? lol...
Please correct me if I was wrong...because it's VERY likely that I misunderstood what my professor said in the first place...
And thank you so much already...and in advance...lol

A large part of the Old Testament is allegorical, or can be interpreted as an allegory. Apparently, your professor is of the opinion that the flight of the Hebrews from Egypt was allegorical, rather than a historic event. You might want to ask him what symbols he sees in that story, because there are good reasons for thiking that the wanderings on the Hebrews before they settled in Palestine actually happened. Those events can be seen as symbolic of a man wandering mentally or spiritually before understanding some truth about god.

Allegory was often used to teach people before literacy was common. Symbols of various sorts were common in teaching stories, and the analogies between stories and life would be relatively for people to understand. Unfortunately, the bible is a mix of allegory and literal fact, and it is difficult to tell one from the other, because historic events were regarded as symbolic of other things. A bad harvest could be considered a sign that a god was unhappy with the people affected, and so on.

If you don't understand the allegories that the professor is expounding, you aren't alone. Some people see allegorical symbols in everything, while other people see natural events driven by cause and effect.

So there are two ways to understand the flight of the Hebrews from Egypt as either an allegory or a symbol to another thing OR as a historic event?!
Well, if so, then it's making sense to me what my professore said...he's probably taking the side of the allegory concept...and you're right...i'll ask him about what exaclty made him think that it's allegory..
Well, thanks alot for clearing that up...:D

Most of it is not just allegory, it is prophecy.

I think that a thorough reading of the book of Exodus, which isn't very long, might help you understanding the Hebrew's flight from Egypt, which is no allegory! It really happened. I'd be willing to help you through the parts you might not understand!

You live in Egypt? That's cool. My dad was just there in March. He was doing some teaching.
