So, a long time ago, years and years, a friend of mine was telling me about a book he was reading. At that time, it wasn't really something I thought I would be interested in, but now my tastes have changed, and I'd really like to find it.

The basic plot as I remember is a utopian society (you know, like they all are). Everything is hunky dorey until one or more people find out that to maintain this utopia, a small child has to be locked up in a solitary room, treated badly, and cannot know why he/she is there though in exactly what way that could be defined as contributing to perfection, I have no idea). In the end, it comes down to a decision of whether or not it's worth it to torture even one child that way in exchange for anything, even a utopia.

If this sounds familiar to anyone, I'd really appreciate a name so I could try to find a copy of this. Trying to search Google and such for the plot has been unsuccessful so far. :)

Wish I could help S1NN3R, but I'm afraid I haven't come across the work yet. It's an interesting plot though, and it would be nice to know the title and the author of the book.

Sea of Glass by Barry Longyear concerned a society where children were kept under lock and key and if discovered put in internemnt camps. Don't think it's the one you are after but it sparked a memory.
