Thinking about Emotion
Fundamental theories are usually simple. It should not be surprising,
therefore, that three simple facts that controvert previously held beliefs
bring revolutionary advances in understanding and enable psychologists
to cure instead of merely treat many psychological disorders. The reasons
the facts remained unrecognized are important parts of the story. Crucial,
previously unappreciated basic facts about emotion as experience and
as process became evident to me during decades of observation, inductive
reasoning, thought, questioning, exploration, and study. Their seminal
importance becomes discernible when you study the logic of the result-
ing theory, the astonishing results of applications to a broad array of
psychological disorders, and the many implications for psychological
health. The clear finding worth reiterating until it registers indelibly is that the
nature of psychological disorder is different from what has been offered by any past
theory. The benefits from use of these discoveries give far more hope for
better lives for multitudes of people.

EMOTIONS ARE FRIENDS NOT ENEMIES
We start with three simple fundamental concepts that are now available
as premises for psychology: 1. Emotion events are always briefly transient, existing only for microseconds, although
they often rapidly repeat over lengthy periods
2. Emotion functions are always benign and never a danger
3. Each emotion always provides constructive function
