Pfft to Marlow, he annoys me!
I don't get why Marlow cares about Kurts so much, he has never even MET HIM!
'could we handle that dumb thing, or would it handle us' is Marlow calling the jungle dumb?!
or is he refering to dumb in the traditional sense of the word, that is that is can't talk!?

seriously, heart of darkness is a boring, terribly difficult book to understand and appreciate (sometimes i didn't know what was going on) but, you must have been reading it with your eyes closed because if Marlow had never met Kurtz, why would the whole book be about marlow talking about a man hes never met. the last half of the book is about how marlow meets kurtz (which is spelled with a z by the way) and trys saving him the "darkness" but his greediness eventually killes him, so its all good.

Here, Here englishukz

First I'm glad that Katylino2 brings up the issue "Why in the hell is this book even read?" even if it is in a bit of a "What so great about the English language?" sort of way. This is the very reason I came to this site.

A large theme in H of D is the uncertainty of everything. Kurtz is constantly acknowledged for his "elocquence" of speech. When Marlow first enters the jungle, he is not interested in Kurtz, but as he sees this darkness and the obscurity of everything, he starts needing some clarity. he hopes, therefore, that Kurtz will be able to enform him.. No one understands this darkness, it is a truth beyond our comprehension, we can only guess at it, and since Kurtz has fallen into it, Marlow hopes he can offer that clarity.

Sometimes it helps if you identify symbolism used in the book. This story is filled with symbolism.
