I'll make 3 statements, 2 are true and one is false, can you spot the lie?

I have flown a plane

I own 4 swords

I can speak 3 languages

If you guess right, it's your turn.

OK, that's the lie. Right?

Idril

No, actually it's not. I have flown a plane, I've never landed one but I didn't claim that. ;) My dad had his private pilot's licence when I was younger and we had a little 4-seater and once he got up in the air, the controls and steering wheel were ours to do with as we pleased. I had planned on getting my own pilot's licence but he sold the plane before I had the chance and renting air time is insanely expensive.

The lie is the language thing, there was a time when I spoke 2 languages, but sadly, it's now down to one.

Now it's your turn...

OK, which is the lie:

I was born in Italy

I have a son and a daughter.

I have a yellow labrador receiver.

Yeah, I don't know how I did that. My mind is not working well this evening. But that is true, I do have a yellow lab.

The lie is that I have a son and daughter. I don't have any children.

OK, now you go.

the first one is the lie??the couple of everything except the husband?

Pendragon
09-03-2006, 11:14 AM
Well, no one ever answered the last one, so I'll give you two truths and a lie. And be sure to remember with Pendragon, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

1.) I choose to live my life since I became disabled vicariously through a seemingly endless string of fictional characters created by my very imaginative IQ.

2.) I have been accused on more than one occasion of being psychic.

3.) I graduated in the top ten of my class in high school and summa cum laude for my AAS degree.

Good luck!

Pendragon
09-04-2006, 11:10 AM
Let's see: Miss Tenderness believes No. 1 to be the lie.

Schokokeks challanges #2 as being false.

Robin and Sub vote for #3, Robin thinking a great personal risk.

Well, time for the moment of truth. Any one could tell you I always invent characters, and that even my poetry that has been published has been published under pseudonyms. So number one is true. My characters here have included David Pendragon, last son of Camelot, Auld Arrow the Ghost of The Dastardly, and The Mafia Penguin.

I have been accused at least three times here on the forum of being psychic, because I seem to know what I shouldn't be able to, but it is only detective work. Number two is also true.

So number three is the lie, but it is a half-truth. The first half is false, the second half is true. I was a slacker in high school and graduated with a low B avarage. But when I went for the degree, a B was unacceptable to me. I only made two the entire time I was in school. I did graduate summa cum laude for my degree. But a half-truth is a LIE. So there you are. Good read Robin and Sub!

RobinHood3000

I'm very glad I didn't guess wrong, or else I might have something to answer for.

Still, in all fairness to tender, IQ doesn't measure imagination.

Here are 2 trues a 1 lie:

1) I've finished "War and Peace" in three days
2) I would like to become an engineer after I get my degree
3) I like to read poems aloud when I'm a bit drunk

Madhuri

2nd one is a lie -- degree in what?? If not engineering then it is difficult and 'would like' is an expectation in the future which is always uncertain.

3) I like to read poems aloud when I'm a bit drunk

1. That would be truly impressive, I was proud of myself for finishing it in a week and a half but I suppose if you do little else but read those 3 days, it would be possible so I'll accept that.

2. Man, I wish I had paid more attention when you were talking about school awhile back...I have to give that one more thought...

3.    So, do you get up on tables and ask for everone's attention and start reading Pushkin? That would be awesome, I really hope this one is true.

Well, if I accept the first one and have hope that the last one is true, then I guess by simple elimination, my guess has to be no. 2.

Boris239
09-05-2006, 09:32 AM
Well, you both are correct. The second one is a lie. My Master degree is in mathematics, so I don't reaaly want to become an engineer.

Madhuri
09-06-2006, 01:14 PM
I think the second one is a not true. Why use the word 'approximately' I believe one would know how many bookcases they have in their house.

1st I guess maybe true.

3rd is for sure true, you have tried to make Robin wear a pink shirt. But on a serious note, I think you do like pink and dark shades.

3. I really like my long hair.

hehe, so, can you tell which is the lie?

Madhuri
09-08-2006, 02:12 AM
3rd is a lie, as if I remember correctly you did mention somewhere that you need a haircut. So, you cant possibly like your long hair.

I'd say the hair thing too... maybe you don't even have long hair...

AimusSage
09-08-2006, 10:03 AM
It was that obvious eh?

Well, one was true, although it has now been taken care of, it still counts as true because it was so at the time of writing. The second is also true, and the third isn't, I used to like my hair when it was long, now that I barely have any of it left, I still like it, but it isn't long anymore. Yes, I got tired of having long hair and decided to cut it all off. :D

Madhuri

Madhuri
09-08-2006, 05:24 PM

First one is true, I was born in Delhi and still live here.

Second one is a lie, I have never donated blood, the number part was just to confuse. :D I did visit the blood bank, but they refused saying I need to put on more weight and then come back.

Third one is also true, I have two brothers.

I guess I agree with Pensive too.

As for the enigmatic Robin,

1. I do know that Robin hasn't done as much archery as he wants. Even I have shot a bow.
2. According to these definitions (http://www.answers.com/ambidextrous) of ambidextrous, Robin certainly fits those requirements.
3. Although this seems obvious, seeing as the above appear to be true, I shall choose the path not taken, and say #1 is a lie.

RobinHood3000

Two truths and a lie...or are they?

1. I've shot a bow before.
2. I'm ambidextrous.
3. Exactly one of the above is true.

Let's play a game, shall we...?Logic would dictate that if this is really two truths and a lie, number three would have to be a lie. But Robin is tricky, and I suspect he has turned this into two lies and one truth. He has no doubt shot a bow at some point in his life as do most young men who take Robin Hood for a hero. The other two are lies. Quoth the Dragon.

RobinHood3000
09-09-2006, 03:57 PM
Does logic truly dictate so, Pen? ;)

If the first be true and the second false, the third is true as well. And if I'm as tricky as you say, that would make the second true, in a sense. But that would make the third false, unless the first was false...

Round and round the reasoning goes...what it concludes, only Robin knows.

Yes, but if there has to be one false the third one if it is true will make two false. The second one being true does not have any effect on the first one's truthfulness. Or vise-versa. Now I see what you mean. Logic dictates a different line of reasoning. Number 2 is the one that can be removed with out harming the equation. So number 2 is false. :p

Pendragon

No reply. Hummmmmm.

OK. Two truths and a lie.

1.) I am a freak about edged weapons and own well over 100 knives, swords, or other bladed weapons.

2.) I recently acquired two books originally published as Pulp Magazines in 1937, about a hero called Captain Future.

3.) As you know, I write about The Shadow. I have the entire Shadow Collection from the pulp magazines. Of the more than 350 novels, I desktop published 200+ with the original magazine covers, and have them bound in report folders.

Who knows what lurks in the heart of Pen? Does even The Shadow know?

Idril

Who knows what lurks in the heart of Pen? Does even The Shadow know?

Oh! My brother and I loved The Shadow when we were kids! Although I don't think we ever read it, we listened to it...does that make any sense or is my memory playing tricks with me?

This is a tough one, Pen, I can see all of them being true...

I'm going to go with number one, I don't doubt you have an interest in blades but I'm thinking, perhaps, the number of blades you own is incorrect.

RobinHood3000
09-15-2006, 10:00 PM
The answer:

Depending on your definition of "ambidextrous," the correct choice for mine could be either 2 or 3. If by "ambidextrous" you mean "equally skilled with either hand" (my original definition), then 2 is false (I have a definite favored hand). If by "ambidextrous" you mean "cunning and deceitful," then 2 becomes true, rendering 3 false.

Now, for Pendragon...I'm thinking 2 is false, if only on the suspicion that Captain Future is not the name of the hero in question.

And an elf should learn to trust what her heart tells her must be correct. There was no lie. All three of these statements are true. The only lie was in saying the words "2 truths and a lie." I have blades from all over the world, many of which are legal to own as a collector, but display only. I cannot carry them on my person. Captain Future was indeed a pulp hero from 1937. Before Conde Nast closed the sites that had the magazines for download, I downloaded and desktop published 200+ Shadow Mysteries. Now, Conde Nast is reprinting the series. Gotcha! ;) :)

I do hope, for the quiet sleep of all animal protectors in your town who would probably launch furious campaigns, that the first one is a lie. But then again, it sounds too peculiar to be made up. Plus, it needn't be a real one :p
The second one doesn't seem suspicious to me at all (mine were birds ;) ). I'm not so sure about the third one, it surely isn't a common occurrence...however, it's the less specified one ("very small").

Taliesin if I recall, does Pagan Rituals, so an animal skull on his bike would not surprise me. I collected them myself; once, and you need not kill any animal, you can find them.

I see no problem with the second statement either; few children do not have imaginary friends. I still create characters, but with stories in mind.

Oh Pen, it's everywhere. Criminals are everywhere so kidnapping too, is everywhere.I know, Pensy, all too well. We are a small town of really no importance, and we had a serial killer here. I had gone to school with the man. He started his violence in a neighboring state and continued here, where he was finally captured when his last victim wasn't dead as he thought when he dumped her body.

But kidnapping is another thing altogether. You have to ask what the kidnapper stands to gain from it. Tal has never came across as extremely wealthy, politically connected, or such. Why would someone just randomly kidnap a child without motive? I could always be wrong! Tal could be from a very wealthy family or something.

My uncle was also kidnapped. He just went out of the door, in the street, started playing with the ball and a woman took him but then he started crying and another person noticed his crying and asked the woman that why the child was screaming, the woman was unable to give a satisfactory reply so the police was called and my uncle was found. :)

It is just about 4 miles to the spot where the serial killer I mentioned dropped of his last victim, and I have often been all over that mountain alone. On the other side is where he dropped off another victim, I was kin to that lady, and I have been up in there a lot alone. I always think what if I had found her, you know? But I think logically, and I have a hard time with a crime that seems pointless. Still, Tal may have had a VERY close call there... I'll still go with 2 though. Jumping into a river and surviving is possible, if the motive is not to commit suicide. :D It may not be true though.True enough, lass! The point of contention was that you said "from a very high spot". After one reaches a certain hieght, intent becomes negligible. The hieght increases the force of the fall, so that hitting the water can be as bad as hitting concrete. But some HAVE survived; it's just unlikely.

No 1: It is a lie. I have never been a national champion. But, yes I have been an athlete in my school days, and did win medals, but never pursued it to the national level.

No 2: Is correct. I jus' dont like eating, I eat to live, to survive, that's it.

No 3: Is correct. I did jump from, say, a hight of about 3 or 4 story building into a river. It was when I went river-rafting, and there are spots from which you can do such acts, so, we stopped at this point, and there were many people doing this, we all survived coz we were wearing life jackets. How you jump into water makes a difference, if you fall flat, it will hurt, but if you dive and cut the water, then you'll survive, and that's what I did.

I'm going with number 3. The reason being that the first two were dashed off without thinking while the third was carefully crafted. :D

Pen, it was carefully crafted because it's something I feel very strongly about...I love pajamas! So that one is most definitely true, in fact, just this last weekend, I put my summer jammies away and got the fall and winter ones out and I had to make some tough choices because I only had room in my 2 drawers for about half of the ones I had. :( And there is a seriously adorable pair I saw in the mall the other day that I think I'm going to have to pick up so that means I'm going to have to stick another pair back in the box because those drawers are stuffed! I think I may have a problem. :goof:

The second one is true, I fell face first onto the roots of a tree (it was out of the ground and being used as a see-saw at the time), when I was about 5 or 6 causing a nice little dent in my cheek that is very unflattering.

So the lie is the first one, Madhuri had it right, I am calorie conscious in the way that I am at least aware of the ridiculous amount of calories I put in my mouth and sometimes, I feel a little guilty about it, but it doesn't stop me from eating what I want to eat...which is generally speaking, not healthy foods. ;)

So, Mad, it's your turn.

Here's you a nice little puzzle:

1.) I would be telling you the gospel truth to say that I'm looking at one of my bookshelves right now, and there is a book there entitled Warped.

2.) But I would be telling a most foul lie to state that I have actually read the book.

3.) Both statements are either true or both are false. On that decision rests the authenticity of this statement.

:brow:

AimusSage
10-31-2006, 02:06 PM
the third one has to be the lie, afterall, it's two truths and a lie, therefore if one and two are true, the third one has to be false, it is impossible for both 1 and 2 to be false. it doesn't leave enought room for 2 truths.

RobinHood3000
10-31-2006, 07:41 PM
The third one is false. The authenticity of the third statement does not rest on said decision -- regardless of what the reader "decides," it will be either true or false. It is analogous to flipping a coin, pre-Schroedinger: deciding whether it is heads or tails does not influence whether it is heads or tails.

Pendragon

Interesting answers. But consider this. The statments are:

1.) I would be telling you the gospel truth to say that I'm looking at one of my bookshelves right now, and there is a book there entitled Warped.

2.) But I would be telling a most foul lie to state that I have actually read the book.

3.) Both statements are either true or both are false. On that decision rests the authenticity of this statement.

The top two have to be either both true or both false. Say number one is true, that the book is indeed there. Then the second statement must be true.
That will work, and leave the third as false.

But if the first is false and the book is not there, then the second statement that I am lying about reading it messes up the equation. It makes a double negative. I am lying that I'm lying. Two negatives make a positive when multiplied. Then the third statement is also a lie, because there is no way for both statements to be false. I have been slightly tricky. The truth is that book is there, I haven't read it yet, and so that makes the third statement irrelevant. Good show!

Well, statistics may not always be accurate, but you can always count on somebody quoting them. People fake their death all the time as well, or collect money on someone who never even existed. A great many people manage to get out of paying taxes. But, like Death and Taxes, Statistics will always be with us. Perhaps "none of the above in and of itself?"

Something really shallow, for a change.

OK. We've had guesses on Number 1 & Number 3.

I have never sold a short story. All the one's that I have had published, 31 to date, on John Olsen's The Shadow Magazine in Review Website are just for the fun of keeping The Shadow alive. I won a prize in a short story contest back in college, but that isn't making money, I never sold the story, it has been rejected several times. So Number 1 is true. I made the money on my poetry.

Number 3 is also true, the poem "Why?" appeared in Broken Streets Magazine. They later took another poem.

Which brings us to Number 2. I love to write form poetry, and I am a wizard at sonnets and villanelle. But if you check the Poetry Post section of this forum, you will find free verse poetry by me, one of which "The House That Jack Built", I think you read, Pensy! So Number 2 is the lie! Yikes me.:(That was the total I have made from publishing around 150 poems. You get say $10 here, $15 there and so on, never more than $25, but then I don't get published by The Atlantic Monthly or The New Yorker (not that I haven't submitted poetry to them, mind!), but smaller magazines. Most just send an author's copy. Some send nothing but an acceptance letter, and never confirm if the poem was used or not. It can be frustrating. But since I have too much time on my hands and a lot of short story ideas, I plan to get back to writing and submitting. Hey, I've been told "NO." by experts! One guy used my SASE to send me a blistering letter in which he cussed me out but good for wasting his time, as he called it. I sent him a really nice card asking if he felt better after getting that off his chest. I had to cancel one of my biggest acheivments (getting 5 for 5 accepted) because I failed to check on what kind of magazine I was submitting my work to. When I found out, I could have squeezed under a rock! I learned to check the magazines out better! :)

Hmmm... well, to me, one and two appear to be mutually exclusive, unless you're irritated with yourself for having a celebrity crush. People who love fluff may or may not be prone to celebrity crushes, but people who hate fluff are usually too down-to-earth/cynical for something so unrealistic. Not to mention that three is so crazy, it's gotta be true.

So... which, one or two? I'm gonna go for two. Since 47% of the film-watching female population have a crush on Johnny Depp, it would be a plausible pick for a lie.

Also: Pendragon, your clapping hands smilie is downright creepy. *shudders*
